Why has it taken me so long to discover MOO? I loved the way it smelled of leather. Must have been the Chesterfield lounges. You’ll find this bar in yet another Melbourne Laneway. I was impressed with the short walk down the stone staircase and pleasantly surprised when I stepped into the large open space that is MOO. We just popped in for a drink but perused the food menu while we were there. I was very impressed. We will come back for dinner and it’ll be soon. Speaking of the drinks, the wine and cocktail menu is impressive, the champagne, Devine. This is the place to bring those you wish to impress!

Ok so I wasn’t sure what to think of MOO as we were descending down the dimly lit stairs into the cellar. I have to confess, when the large wrought iron doors opened as we neared I struggled to keep the tune of ‘Hotel California’ from my mind. My eyes struggled to adjust to the lighting but my senses were well and truly in overdrive, and by the time my eyes focussed I was salivating and desperate to try the eats on offer! Sadly this was a one drink stop as we held reservations elsewhere. The sommelier appeared very knowledgeable and paired my friend extremely well with a glass of French Champagne. I would have to say the vibe of MOO appeared to be somewhat intimate, being small groups of friends or couples looking for a quiet night, and not really well matched for rowdy after work drinks. MOO has a touch of elegance about it, and I will certainly be going back to try the menu!

If you are looking for the quintessential melbourne hidden bar experience, then this has to be it. From the outside there is just a door, which leads to some stairs… narrow stairs. stairs going down… which lead to another door, which opens automagicly as you approach… then things start to look up, the space opens out into a secret underground hideaway. a huge bar down one side, some comfortable lounges in the middle and little nooks along the back wall for you to hide away in. The service is just right, it is the fine balance of attentive but not visibly hovering. The food is great! Make sure you order lots of little plates to share around so that you can try it all! It would be great for a nice size group of friends however, I would recommend not doing that, just go by yourself with a nice book and hide away from the world for a little bit!

This is one of those great little gems that you almost don’t want write a review about, because you want to keep it your own precious little secret. It is my go to on Friday nights when I don’t have a reservation anywhere and there is no way I’m waiting for an hour someplace else. I can always get a table here and I don’t know why. The ambiance is great. The tapas is consistently good even though the service isn’t(the service isn’t bad per se, just absent minded, but this could be the American in me; i.e.expectations of too often filled water glasses and inquiries about the food post delivery). The wine list is extensive and the atmosphere is always warm and cozy. I like taking folks from out of town here, whether it is parents or work colleagues, everyone is pretty happy with the experience.

Awesome Tapas menu, perfect ambience, beautifully decorated. Definitely worth tracking down people. Try the pork belly.
