Well … this place has certainly changed!!! To be fair, I haven’t been here for about … um, 15 years! Back then, it was ‘nouveau dining’ — big plates, tiny meals and big price tag.
We came here in the spirit of trying ‘new’ places in the southern suburbs, and ended up here by default — not many places are open for dinner on a Tuesday night. It is a beautiful whitewashed cottage which has definitely been transformed — the front door opens onto a room which would be perfect for cocktails, and then steps down into the restaurant. Luckily the chairs have all been updated (last time it was deck chairs — seriously!!), and the atmosphere was sophisticated. The courtyard area has also had a complete facelift — gorgeous fire, tealights, very nice!
I ordered the eye fillet beef with truffled spinach (yes, you read right) — oh wow, absolutely amazing! My partner had the kingfish, which was also superb. The wine list is excellent (as you would expect in McLaren Vale), and there are options for ‘liquid dessert’ which I always prefer ;) I had an espresso martini (which was delicious, albeit not a real espresso martini, as it was mainly Baileys!).
Service was excellent and attentive, and we left here feeling like we had an excellent meal worth every dollar, and that we would definitely be coming here again!

Lovely meal, service was exceptional. I had the confit duck leg with pearl couscous, which was tasty, however the duck was a little dry and it needed more sauce. Everything else was above par.

Great grass fed beef. Delicious fresh (and huge) salad to start. Select the salad listed as a side and share it if possible.
Steak was very flavorful, though not as tender as some I’ve had I the US. Still very, very tasty. They offered mustard on the side as an accompaniment, but I passed. This region of Australia has a historically German influence which showed up in the mustard offering. I kind of wish I would have tried some, not that the steak needed it. Would have been interesting as five different mustards were offered.

Great service, beautiful atmosphere (especially in the enclosed courtyard) and good food make The Barn a real treat. I’m told they have an excellent range of wines but I can’t confirm as we had been on a wine tour all day and were all wined out!
