«…ANOLDFASHIONEDFAVE. FINALLYFOUND. ANDFLOURISHING…‘FANK’ GOODNESS…» Well. this afternoon. we went looking. and we found. DAIRYBELLICECREAM. at 89 Chadstone Road in Malvern East. There are 3 or 4 left in Melbourne. I think. Very very sad to see cos one of the big things I love about them is their total absence of BS. Yes, none in ‘em whatsoever — they’re just a good old Aussie icon — alas a dying breed, a bit plain, a bit quaint, a bit kitsch — but honest, and generous, and ‘bloody’ good value… and kids everywhere love them… so too, mums and dads… and nans and pops… and babies… and pugs… In my book, a good Dairy Bell Ice Cream Shop beats most of these contemporary swish minimalist urbane ‘high falutin’ ice creameries. hands down!!! For one. their ice cream is not made from imported powder. whipped and fluffed up with water and/or a bit of milk or whatever. and perfumed and painted with the ultra exotic and the hyper gourmet — vials are vials and drops are drops. Oh YES. I’ve let that one out of the bag. Haven’t I!!! Nor do you need to have a fifty in your pocket to buy your family of four, an ice-cream — 1 scoop, possibly, in a cone… And where, pray tell, can you buy a good old-fashioned chocolate fudge sundae with 3 mammoth sized scoops of decent icy not overly sweet ice-cream, a ton of thick warm seriously fudgy sauce, heaps of freshly whipped cream, a load of crushed nuts and a handful of good thick crisp wafers??? For $ 7.50!!! Needs two to eat, it’s that big!!! Or a double cone with 4 big scoops ice-cream??? For $ 6.50!!! Or 6 largish freshly fried and sugared hot jam ball doughnuts??? For $ 6.00!!! Yes, they’re making them still, at Malvern East!!! Or freshly made waffles, with as many scoops ice-cream as you’d like to pay for… Or yummy pancakes… Or thick milk shakes. Or a decent latte. Yes. only at Dairy Bell!!! NOTE: If you’re after an experience. then don’t bother — It’s not that type of place — nil vistas — nil arty facades — nil interior decorating — nothing much to see. nowhere much to be at. not a place to be seen. At Dairy Bell [as it’s name surely suggests], it’s simply all about the ice-cream — whether by design or default. Who knows. But it works for me. You certainly won’t see the ‘dashing young thing’ asking to try 16 different flavours. giving a ‘mauvaise opinion’ of each, whilst well behaved politically correct others wait patiently in queues, only to decide that he’d or she’d or it’d prefer a coffee across the road instead… Rather, you’ll find lots of little kids, school kids, teenagers and families — the true connoisseurs of Ice-cream. all ‘having their well deserved fill’. Today, we had: 3 x large thick shakes 1 x enormous chocolate fudge sundae 1 x single cone with 2 big scoops ice-cream 4 x super fresh hot jam ball doughnuts All for a little over $ 30 — You won’t feel hard done by here. I can assure you of that!!! Oh. they’re open 7 days a week and take eftpos and credit card. Also. they do have a few tables. with chairs. in and out. Visited on Tuesday 24 November for Ice cream after school with my big boys.
