Lidcombe Station

I sometimes find myself questioning the mental capacity of the staff there. Peak hour and only 2 gates (plus the shared wide gate) available for people to get out of the station? If their goal was to create a huge bottleneck and cause massive raging customers then they have succeeded.
The station is always packed with people anyway. People standing all over the place and flipping their hair and giant backpacks around, walking in the opposite direction of where they are looking or staring at their phones while making their way along the platform without any regard for others, people standing outside the station at the bus stops clogging up the footpath, cars parked in the bus zones, busses parked in the pick-​up-​drop-​off zones, people standing RIGHT IN FRONT of the lift doors as they open and you can’t wheel your bike out. People walking into the lift and standing at the front, REFUSING to move, so you can’t get your bike IN the lift.

Ahhh the good old days. This is one of the few stations on the rail network that I was scared to get out at… And yet I did, regularly, to catch up with a mate who lived nearby. I wasn’t wearing brown undies for nothing you know!
From the seedy sinister patrons lurking and loitering via the nearby pubs, to the sardine packed sweat box carriages and the trains with no brakes, theres not much joy to be had at this station.

The suburb of Lidcombe is located 15 km west of the Sydney central business district.
Lidcombe station opened in 1858 when the rail line was constructed through this area then known as Haslam’s Creek, after local land-​owner Samuel Haslam. Haslam’s Creek was the site of the first railway «disaster» in New South Wales in July 1858 which resulted in two deaths. In 1868 or 1876 or 1878 (reports differ) the name was changed from Haslam’s Creek to Rookwood because local residents didn’t want their suburb with the same name as the Haslam’s Creek cemetery.
However, over time the cemetery become known as Rookwood Cemetery, and the living residents became agitated again about the association of their suburb with the cemetery. In 1913, a new name was suggested to honour the previous mayor Mr Lidbury and the current mayor Mr Larcombe. A new name of Lidcombe was combined from LIDbury and LarCOMBE on 1 January 1914. Not exactly genius, but it gets the job done and was better than the alternate name combination of Larbury.
I would kindly describe Lidcombe station as unremarkable. The suburb always felt like slow death to me. Just sayin’. There was a new platform built for the Sydney Olympic Park line going to the stadium at Homebush Bay.
Due to its geographic location, the area is becoming a hotspot for commercial development. The new Costco is there (yay). Juniperina Juvenile Justice Centre at Rookwood Road is the state’s only juvenile detention centre for girls. Now that’s certainly a feather in one’s cap.
