I always feel a bit awkward walking into a jewellery store. I feel the weight of expectation upon me, and there’s nothing worse than a shop assistant with a sing song greeting, «Soooooo! Shopping for anything SPECIAL?» — as if I’m doing a recce for my dream engagement ring or something. Blergh. But happily, upon strolling into Zamel’s — doing a recce for a friend’s birthday present — the shop assistant was nothing but friendly and helpful. Not a hint of expectant sing song about her. Instead she helped me with all my many questions, and even took to writing me a list of prices to help me with my comparison shopping. Perhaps it was some sort of reverse psychology at work, but whatever it was, you can consider me grateful.
