I’m something of a pizza snob. I simply can’t deal with the stale, generic meat-filled pizza toppings I’m presented with by the usual pizza chains. Meat-lovers? No thanks. Hawaiian? I’m not 6 years old anymore. Thankfully Crust opened in my neighborhood just in time to take care if those occasions where the other half is absolutely DYING for a round dough based thin and crispy grease injection. These days they are even offering a Healthy Choice menu section containing options that contain roughly half of the saturated fat of comparable pizzas from other outlets — and I can tell you despite the lack of fat, they taste GREAT. I generally go with a Bruschetta Healthy Choice pizza(Bocconcini on a Tomato base, topped with Fresh Basil & Balsamic Glaze). It’s always fresh with good size portions of the toppings and good coverage. The size is smaller than the regular menu, so I generally need a whole Healthy Choice pizza to myself. My other half has tried a lot of the range, but has found the Upper Crust range to be the best group to choose from. Moroccan Lamb(Moroccan Lamb, Spanish Onions & Baby Spinach on a Tomato base, topped with Mint Yoghurt and Lemon) and White Proscuitto(Sliced Roasted Potatoes, Prosciutto, Gorgonzola & Fresh Rosemary on a Béchamel sauce base) are two he continually returns to. Both have strong, adventurous flavour matches between the ingredients and are an excellent alternative to the ‘normal’ options one is presented with at the local pizza joint. I like ordering online, but the phone method is just as easy. The staff are friendly and courteous, and when completing a pick up the shop front is very clean and has a good view of the food preparation area. I am always reassured to see all staff wearing clean gloves(constantly being replaced with new ones) and hair nets in use across the board. When completing a pick up parking can be a problem, but there is a 15 minute spot out front that you will score if you’re lucky. Staff can accept cards or cash for both pick ups and delivery, and all deliveries I have experienced have been friendly and quick. This is my number one choice for lazy pizza nights around the area.

Coffee, Croissant and Pizza, the three loves of my life! Good coffee is getting easier to find, decent croissants are elusive but becoming obtainable, Good pizza however is still hit and miss. There are 2 types of Pizza. Italian style, made with a few fresh ingredients, hand-thrown dough, real buffalo mozzarella and preferably wood-fired. Sit down, have a glass of Barolo, watch the pizzaiolo(pizza maker) toss the dough in the air, slop on the toppings from a handful of bowls around him and then use his pizza paddle like a wand to magic up these simple but delicious discs out of a roaring fire. And then there’s everything else — Danish shredded Mozzarella, pre-chopped ingredients out of a bag, olives from industrial sized cans, preprepared dough discs, piled high with toppings and put onto a conveyor belt oven. Crust is interesting because it is in the second category but charges like its in the first. There’s no doubt that the quality of the toppings is superior to the big delivery chains and they do have some interesting toppings — Pork Belly, Peking Duck(yummo) — but essentially this is Dominos Hut Boys with some squirty sauce on. Now there’s nothing wrong with that, in fact its really rather tasty and if you dont fancy a full-on evening out and just want some pizza to munch whilst watching a Rom-Com on Seven then this is perfect. Except for the fact that they charge four times the price of the big delivery chains. The product is better than those industrial type pizzas but not THAT much better. Now, I’m a sucker for service and I will say that the boys and girls who work there are very nice and efficient so I have no complaints on that score but for me, if I want a proper Pizza, I’ll head over to Teneriffe or New Farm and if I want a ‘take-away’, I’ll grab a $ 6 Capriciosa from somewhere cheap and cheerful.
