We had several dishes and the highlight was the grilled eggplant. I think that was fantastic. Then served with sashimi and tempura. Portion wise was tiny and do not believe it worths the price. Sashimi was nothing just ordinary, sliced wasn’t consistent and tempura was too greasy. Quite disappointed. Pretty sure will not return.

The food was OK to Excellent. The fish was fresh, cut of sashimi were good. Besides the sashimi, tempura was well battered, crispy and not greasy. Service was bit slow while we just finished the opening glass of wine. Based on the freshness and quality of the ingredients used to turn the food into a decent visual art, this is what you are paying for.

I’m glad that I stumbled across this unassuming Japanese restaurant on Racecourse Rd late last year. They do amazingly fresh, beautifully presented sashimi(maybe something about being near the port of Brisbane gets them the freshest catches) and some very wholesome and filling Japanese vegetarian dishes. One such example of the latter is their ‘dengaku nasu’ — eggplant grilled in sweet miso paste and topped with sesame seeds. Their version distinguished itself from others in the the eggplant came sliced longitudinally, with the green stalk at the top still visible. Many places will slice the eggplant and give you several pieces, but Hosokawa’s presentation is by far my favourite.

We are blessed with a lot of great Japanese in Brisbane and I’m someone who counts those blessings often. I lived in Melbourne for 6 years and although it is rightly considered Australia’s culinary capital I can confirm that we beat them hands down with Japanese. If you’re as big a fan of this cuisine as I am then you should go out of your way for Hosokawa. This is great Japanese done really well. Super fresh, quality ingredients, bang on flavours. And I have to echo Rhiannon, the Beef Tataki and Nasu Dengaku(grilled eggplant) are amongst the best versions I’ve had. Oh so hungry now…

We had dinner at Hosokawa before seeing a play down the road at the Hamilton Town Hall. I made our booking for 6pm, which is when they opened. But we weren’t the first people to arrive — the place filled up as soon as the doors opened! A large group had pre-ordered large Sashimi boats and the chef was busily preparing these when we sat down. They were stunning — a true piece of art! I ordered a Plum Wine which was delicious and sweet to start with. The menu is quite extensive, but is well organised and I think well priced for Japanese food. The Egg Omlette was the first to come out. It was quite a big serving and the egg was delicious and sweet. The Beef Tataki, which is seared beef that is still quite rare on the inside and cut into thin slices and served with a vinegar/soy dipping sauce — was absolutely to die for! The beef was so tender. The Spicy Tuna sushi rolls were very good — Tuna sashimi with a sauce. It wasn’t as spicy as I had assumed, but still very nice. 6 pieces of sushi on the plate, with ginger and wasabi. We had ordered a dish that was Japanese Beef rolls with Vegetables. I can’t remember the Japanese name of it, but dear lord, this was totally amazing. It was marinated beef slices that were in a thick sweet marinade/sauce. This is a must try dish! I had read a recommendation for the Nasu Dengaku — grilled eggplant with miso — and this was one of the highlights of the meal. The eggplant was cooked to perfection — the flesh so soft and creamy — and the miso on top was super tasty. You can eat the flesh and skin of the eggplant, it was so well cooked. Other people at my table ordered the Teriyaki Chicken and Chicken Katsu as their meals. Just remember to order a bowl of rice, as they don’t come with rice automatically. The service was great at Hosokawa and the food was prepared and served very quickly. I can highly recommend this place for dinner, but you definitely need to book at weekends as it gets very busy!

Hosokawa, my friends is crazy about this joint, he loves the raw sushi they prepare and makes sure that once a week he grabs some sushi rolls for dinner. He has tried on numerous times to get me to eat the sushi rolls but I still refuse. Personally I like the hot rice dishes, especially the Karang fried chicken. Its crispy and is served with a side of salad that is freshly prepared and compliments the meat well. I find that the service in Hosokawa can be a bit cold, especially when there is a small amount of people there. Sometimes It can feel like the staff are putting no effort into their business. In saying this, my friend will always hit this place up, he live for it and would never say a bad word. It may take a little while to convert me, but ill still order from there.
