Came here on a Saturday night. Venue has a laid back, pub vibe. Decent varied menu. The two of us ordered: Pollo Avocado — A chicken breast with half an avocado on top of it, drowned in a garlic white wine sauce — which really just tasted like cheese with no hint of white wine at all. Warm BBQ Chicken Salad — decent sized salad and the dressing was nice but there was WAY too much dressing. Like the chicken dish, the salad was drowning in the sauce/dressing which didn’t make it as nice as it could have been. Not really what you expect when you pay $ 20 for a salad. Staff were generally friendly and helpful. The next time I’m in Adelaide, I won’t be back here in a hurry.

Waking up bright and early on Sunday feeling fresh and fine, I dragged my — what’s the opposite of fresh and fine? — boyfriend out of bed with the promise of a lunch of fried pub food and a cider to wash away those hangover blues at our local. Feeling self righteous(me) and in a world of pain(him), we headed over to the Broady, a relaxed and casual pub in the beachside suburb of Glenelg and joined a mix of locals, families and equally hungover young uns’ for lunch. Ordering chicken and beef schnitzel with gravy, the size of said schnitzels and quantity of gravy, was impressive and definitely tasty. My only teeny-tiny gripe is that the schnitties were grilled and not deep fried, but keep in mind that this is coming from someone who probably has a clinical addiction to pretty much anything that has been crumbed or whisked through a deep fryer. Having said that, I am SO keen to try the special Broady schnitzel — topped with prawns, avocado, cheese and a sweet chili and cream sauce. Whoa mama. Nice menu, laid back atmosphere and good wine selection makes for a good, non fancy Sunday lunch whether you’re possibly still slightly inebriated from the previous nights festivities, or just down for a good ol’ pub feed.

Saturday nights and, sometimes, Friday nights. Those are the nights to go out. That’s society’s doctrine, anyway. Not everyone adheres to it, it’s true. And I’m about to give you a very good reason to join the weekday party-animals. No, the reason ISN’T the Broadway Hotel(known colloquially as the Broady). The reason is the Holdfast Hotel(known colloquially as the Holdy — where DO we come up with these names?). But the Holdy closes at 11:00 p.m. And if you’re not finished for the night, you come to the Broady. Although, there’s a period of happy hour early on at the Broadway, I tend to prefer the Holdfast for its beer garden. There isn’t really an outside area at the Broadway. Of course, if you’re a smoker, the bouncer’ll let you out and in, without having to get back in line. But, suffice it to say, the Holdfast is a better place to hang out at until they won’t let you anymore. And when that happens, go to the back of the Broadway if you want to relax and chat, or stick to the front if you want to boogie.
