French Food is supposed to be seasonal, flavoursome and cooked with a light delicate hand. Unfortunately no one told this to the cooks who served up the Good Food Months French night at Alfred and Hettys. Instead we got potatoes that were undercooked and served as if they had been cut from a cookie cutter. Sauces that tasted like they had been cooked, frozen then defrosted for us. Fish that was burnt. A Tarte Tartin that was sickly sweet, heavy and hard to cut. My friends pâté was served on two slices of white bread that was toasted and cut into shapes, again cookie cutter style. The only dish of mine that I liked was the French onion soup. I don’t mind bistro type food but not masquerading as restaurant food and at restaurant prices. And the service was too try hard. We got asked about 15 times during the meal if everything was alright. I even got asked before I had had my first mouthful. Our waitress was friendly but did not know what was in the boullibaise sauce. All in all we could not wait to leave. I’ll try leave this review on a good note– the décor of the place was lovely.

Really great food, lovely service! We took a large group there at late notice and they handled it smoothly and efficiently.

We really love it here. The food is beautiful, the staff are so friendly and the restaurant itself is great. We’ve been here for a romantic meal for two and a birthday party for 12, and more. Every time had been great.

I wanted this to be an amazing spot that I come back to again and again because the concept is so cute, see their website, and every time I pass I can’t get over how beautiful the dining room looks but on my first time there I was let down. Really down. We had to wait 3 hours for our meal and were only given a small rickety table outside during a slight drizzle. When our food did eventually arrive I was totally underwhelmed by the meat to coleslaw ratio and the taste of the slaw in general. Note to the waiter: if you cannot serve a meal in under 1 hour you need to be upfront about this. I would have been happy to know I was going to be fed on cocktails alone for 3 hours or I could have made the choice to come back another time and avoid the whole debacle to follow. Instead our overconfident waiter sat us. He knew he had 3 tables of 7 – 10 people who has ordered just before us. He admitted this later. But he made us wait all the same. So that sucks. Note to restaurateur: make your seating comfortable. At first I thought the picnic style seating was charming and part of the homey feel of the place but after such a long wait I was more excited to leave that chair behind than I should have been. Note to chef: Ditch the slaw. I should say that the two men who accompanied me to dinner really loved their ribs. They were so happy to have food after three hours, yes, but they are still discerning carnivores so if you like ribs feel free to make a reservation and come here. I had steak frites which I didn’t realize came with a ½lb of bad coleslaw. It was really more of a mountain of red cabbage chopped with some vinegar spritzed over it. I like red cabbage. What I don’t like is a massive garnish with very little flavor that I feel compelled to eat because its the only vegetable on my plate. I couldn’t do do it though. The cabbage won.

I’ll be short and sweet. The atmosphere is relaxing. The vibe is in contrast to the menu. The food was delicious. The service was friendly. I’ll be back for the roasts.

I needed to find a private dining space for a team of 20people for a Christmas Dinner, that was reasonably priced(can be tricky in Sydney!). I had dined at Alfie and Hetty some months before this search and thought the food was amazing, great atmosphere — exposed brick, rustic, fresh flowers everywhere, trendy/knowledgeable staff, wooden floors, cast iron pretty looking dust collectors, old frames with historic pics. There is a background story to Alfie and Hetty also… its a nice read on the menu! Justin had replied to my email request and offered the upstairs space all for us :) We had the comfort of 4 different areas all to ourselves — the bar, the couches, the balcony and the dining space = perfect! We had our own waiter/bartender, the service was professionally casual which was very refreshing. Im not much of a foodie, unlike the group I dined with but the food was amazing! Served on breadboards. and good serving sizes The wine was great(when is it not!?). In my dealings and organizing with Justin everything ran smoothly and nothing was an issue. even when I forgot to reply to his emails ;)(whoopsie) The whole team at Alfie and Hetty should be very proud of themselves in what they have created. I look forward to dining there again! Lucky I live nearby ;)

I’d seen this replaced a former joint recently and I liked the fact that it’s based on an old gangster and his friendship with an affluent philanthropist. Would have been nice to have tunes playing based around this era. The staff here are quite attentive and despite a run of corked wines the final recommendation for wine was a good one. The meals were a good size and some were delicious(the prawn dish and zucchini flowers were fantastic). I liked the fact that its split into two zones, Hetty’s restaurant downstairs and Alfie’s bar upstairs. Created a good atmosphere. While it’s hard to say I’ll be back(there are so many good restaurants yet to try along Glebe Pt Rd, it’s a good addition to the strip.

Really enjoyed Alfie and Hetty’s. Great back story on how Glebe is the meeting of two worlds. Interior makes you feel like you have been transported to 1900 in a Glebe terrace complete with open fire. Worth booking as we nabbed last available walk in table at 6:00 on a Sunday night. Perfect winter fare with lots of big meat dishes, many for 2 to share. We had the T-Bone which was enormous. Perfectly cooked through and slightly pink, just as it should be for medium. Hard task with such a thick cut! Very high quality meat and perfectly seasoned. To top it off the staff were very friendly, solid wine list and good selection of craft beers and cocktails. Highly recommended, captures the essence of Glebe.
