What an amazing find! Their signature salmon sushi dish was absolutely delicious and accompanied with the crunchy salad it made for a fantastic dinner! Highly recommend this gem!

The modern eatery is an incredible place for Japanese food! Especially if you want tasty great quality food at an affordable price… Their salads are so yummy and fresh and they have a wide array of sushi options on offer. This place is very busy and that is almost always a good sign(I can think of one place where it’s usually busy but the food and service are abysmal.) so avoid winging it and call in to book a table just in case! The staff is very nice and the place is nicely decorated with a modern look, black chairs and stools contrasted with light wood and white walls which sets a lovely intimate scene for a date or catch up with good friends. Another good sign this place is doing well and attracting the crowds, they are opening a second place on Beaufort st in Mount Lawley soon so fear not, people in the northern suburbs the house of aburi sushi is coming your way to delight your pallets

I got taken here after arriving back from Japan and was very impressed by their signature salmon sushi dish. It was delicious! Gorgeous minimalist presentation and interior, reminded me so much of places in Japan when they greet you as you walk in the door.

Absolutely love their sushi! Dining area can be pretty cold in winter though so make sure you rug up!

I’ve been meaning to review this place for weeks. It honestly rivals Nobu’s standards, and for about a third of the price!!! One of my local favorites for lunch, dinner or a snack on the run. So so fresh, open kitchen with excellent wait staff. They also catered for my shellfish allergy with ease. An absolute must visit if you love Japanese and are in Freo! Small restaurant so expect a small wait on weekend nights and peak dinner times.

What a great little sushi restaurant! We came here for lunch and everything was very delicious, beautifully presented, in a fun atmosphere with great service — and the prices are very fair. Unquestionably one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in the perth area. We will be regulars here for sure!

Wham, bam, thank you Modern Eatery. There is some pretty astounding sushi in this joint. Extremely fresh, innovative, and unbelievably delicious. Everything we ordered was outstanding. I particularly enjoyed the Aburi salmon and Kamikaze roll. One taste and I was sold for life. Dying to get back and try everything. Don’t pass up their wine list either. While it’s small, they’ve gotten some rare jewels on there. The Middlesex Pinot Noir is bloody ridiculous. Have you ever tasted a wine so good you just get mad? It’s so good that you feel compelled to kick its ass when you finish the bottle because the pleasure is over? Middlesex Pinot: It’s so good that you might tip the bottle upside down and stick your tongue in the top to capture every last drop while everyone watches in horror. All in all, this joint is winner winner sushi dinner. They even gave me a $ 10 voucher when I come back for lunch. Me love you long time, sushi masters.

We decide to order a craft roll since they sound really impressive. The kamikaze roll($ 12.00) catches our eye with it’s ebi(prawn) tempura, shredded crab meat and avocado, topped with tobiko, aburi sauce and masago. The roll is delicious. Four slices jam packed with flavour and different layers of texture. The torch on the rice is excellent, changing the taste profile in a really addictive manner — it’s definitely memorable. The tempura inside is light and perfectly crisp; the avocado creamy and sweet. It’s a well seasoned and well balanced dish; and a nice evolution from your classic ‘California’ roll. But at $ 3 per slice I think the pricing was just a little too high in my opinion considering when you compare it to a similar style of sushi and Aisuru and for four pieces their cost is generally more around the $ 10 mark. The other dish we ordered was the signature combo($ 23.00) which is comprised of one piece of aburi salmon nigiri, one piece of aburi tuna nigiri, 1 piece of aburi hotate nigiri, two pieces of salmon oshi and two pieces of ebi oshi. As much as I enjoyed the kamikaze roll, the oshi pieces in this combo were absolute standouts. I love that creamy torched sauce on top on the sweet slices of fish; the rice just lightly sweetened to welcome the meat on top. It’s a real standout way to showcase fresh seafood and this simplistic but delicious style of Japanese food preparation. The other nigiri options on the plate are all tasty too, particularly the hotate(scallop) which is sweet and slightly firm. Well we may have only had just a taste of The Modern Eatery, but what we ate was really enjoyable and well prepared. It’s not the cheapest of Japanese venues around, however the flavours manage to impress in a way that has me looking forward to a return trip soon for more sushi goodness.

If you love sushi, you are in for a treat. Head down to the heart of Fremantle and you will find The Modern Eatery, located along High Street. The Modern Eatery is an institution for sushi with their speciality in aburi sushi. We had the Kamikaze Roll, Fry Me To The Moon and the Baby Dragon from the craft rolls. They were delicious, fresh and full of flavour. Want to try something different? Give the Fry Me To The Moon a try, it’s crisp outside with a hint of sweetness, smooth and creamy cheese inside. But, you must never leave The Modern Eatery without ordering their Aburi Sushi. I had the salmon aburi oshi and it was melt in your mouth with a slight smokey and creamy flavour. Apart from the fresh, good quality sushi, the service was also excellent and the staff are friendly and attentive. I can’t wait to be back again and I highly recommend the Modern Eatery!

I have been looking forward to a good sushi restaurant in Freo for a long long time. Don’t get me wrong, there are sushi restaurants and they are run by lovely people and the food is good but its no ‘hum’ while you eat’ great. The servings here are quite small but its worth it! You can taste the fish and its freshness. The scallops are to die for and the tuna… well you can’t go past tuna. There are some very inviting rolls on the menu but we went for the Baby Dragon and Spicy Tuna. They were both delicious, as was the sashimi platter. The wasabi isn’t too strong so load up. I will be back here, for sure.
