what ever vision the original owners of Outback Jacks first had when they opened the doors to this Australiana outback themed restaurant in Fremantle it surely must of been for something a lot better than what’s in place today. I dined just a couple of weeks after it first opened some years ago and the restaurant was always busy with guests often waiting at the bar for a seat or opting to dine elsewhere such was the crowd. The food always looked fresh and it was tasty. I went back again on 3 others occasion and on the last of these occasions I left disappointed after my wife & I both received steak that had been well over cooked. Anyway we decided to give it another chance. How times have changed. I walked in there last Sat at 7:30pm and it was near dead. My wife decided to chance it and we walked in and took up a table. We decided not to order any entrees and instead placed our main order and got a drink. My wife ordered a ‘Boss Cockys Cut’ with chips and salad whilst I ordered ‘Slow Cooked Bourbon Pork Ribs’ with chips and salad. My wife’s medium rare steak arrived cooked as was ordered however it was cold as if it had been sitting for sometime before being plated. My ribs arrived and with one look at them I knew I was going to be disappointed. There was hardly any sauce on these ribs and what sauce was there was watery and cold and formed a small puddle on the plate under the ribs. The ribs were full of fat which was unpleasant but what turned me right off was as I was attempting to cut some meat off the ribs I noticed a winged bug or miggy floating in the puddle of sauce on my plate. I couldn’t bring myself to put any of this food in my mouth and decided not to bring it to the staffs attention as I just wanted to leave. The chips were OK while the tomato less salad was dull and forgettable. I will never step foot into the restaurant again. It’s such a shame to see this once vibrant restaurant plummet to where it has. I had hopes this place would fill the void I had when Lone Star closed its doors but sadly it’s not to be. I’ve since read the current owner of the store came into the business with little to no experience other than a background of working in Hungry Jacks.

I’m ummmed and aaahhhd about what rating to give our dining experience tonight. The food was delicious, everyone enjoyed what they ordered but the service was really bad. 2 kids meals were ordered but both came out wrong, one with the wrong sort of potato and the other with sauce when it was asked for without. We also ordered two serves of garlic bread but they also didn’t arrive and one of our meals was forgotten which meant one person was eating after we had finished our meals. The manager was genuinely apologetic and we were given a discount on the meal that was forgotten and a serving of garlic bread for free. If these things hadn’t happened it would have been 4 stars for sure.

A friend recommended we dine there for their newly added game meat. When we arrived the general atmosphere felt easy going and family friendly For appetizers we had the kangaroo and crocodile skewers with jacks spiciest chicken wings. The skewers were… Ok, nothing outstanding. But the spicey chicken wings made our toughest of friends tear. Which can be very dangerous since Mondays are all you can eat chicken wings… For dinner we ordered the camel back straps and buffalo steaks, each customized with different sauces and toppers. The boys had the camel and quoted,“best cut of meat I’ve ever had”, «very tender and juicy». They reckoned camel taste a bit more gamey, but in a good way. My buffalo experience was somewhat similar. It tasted like lean beef, but the texture was like butter. I easily devoured it with my garlic sauce. We also ordered the widgety grubs for the experience. Quick note– they advertise it as a main, but as you can see from the pictures it is more like a sample. Five of us had a taste and agreed it had a strong peanut butter then fried egg after taste(once you get past the grub texture). On a yuck level from 1 – 5, I’d give it a low 2. And lastly, I was the only one in our party to make it to dessert. I had the sticky date pudding and absolutely loved it! Great portion size and sweetness to end the evening. You also get the desert cup for a souvenir. All in all great experience. Fair dinkum prices and kid friendly atmosphere in the heart of freo.

I visited Outback Jack’s for a private function so my experience of it was fairly limited. Venue is nice enough but I was not impressed with my food. My steak was far from well done and I did not feel like complaining and ruining the experience for the rest of the people involved. I’m sure it was a one-off mistake but it’s hard to give a restaurant a positive review when the food was less then satisfying. Maybe you’ll have a different experience, but those are my 2 cents.

Very inviting from the outside and the steaks are very inviting from the inside. One of a few outback steakhouses in Perth, the one in Fremantle boasts a big verandah and courtyard. It has so many seats making it a great place to come with a group. No need to go into the itty gritty of the menu because its mostly steak. If you consider yourself a steak connoiseur you might end up spending quite a bit of money in here as its definitely not a budget outlet.
