Back in my student days, Piccolo’s was my lunchtime haunt of choice. It’s basically a suburban lunch bar in the middle of Fremantle that serves up simple hot snacks and sandwiches at a reasonable price. I used to be able to score a basic lunch here for under seven dollars, which was well within my price change. A quick look in the other day revealed little had changed, aside from a fetching red paint job. It’s still the best value place around to score a simple lunch. They also have one of the most exhaustive collections of drinks fridges I’ve ever seen. If you’re a student or work locally, it’s worth checking out as once you do, you’ll probably find yourself in here daily for an enjoyably straightforward and well priced lunch.

This café might have the right atmosphere and look but I reckon it lets itself down in the food department. It’s a bit deceptive because there are old school Italian style women who work here. This encourages people to think the food is lovingly home made with ample goodness and care. Well, maybe it is but it’s also made with way too much oil. Something that many a restaurant is guilty of but this one seems to provide that bit extra of too much oil. And with oil, too much really is way too much. This is really just a problem with the pasta dishes, of course. They do make nice sandwiches in this small, oft’ crowded yet always charismatic café. But it is overrun with ravenous Notre Dame students every lunch time. A multitude of NDA students, squeezed in to close confines is probably fun if you’re one of the said students but not so much if you’re not. I used to rather enjoy the little clunky tables, small wooden chairs and quick paced atmosphere of Piccolo Café when I went to Notre Dame. And I reckon people will either love or hate this original eatery.

Piccolo’s is a massively popular café for every local in Fremantle, and during semester time it’s filled with Notre Dame students grabbing some cheap and filling food. The ladies here are vintage Italian and the total characters of the place, everybody in town knows and loves these ladies. They serve up various sandwiches and you can also select various ingredients and make up your own. Otherwise classic Italian food is available, tubs of pasta with rich dressings, or my personal favourite the ‘Belissimo’ a chicken, cheese and sun-dried tomato foccacia. They also serve up coffee and tea, and are some of the lowest prices in Fremantle for your caffeine fix. Their prices in general are nice and low for the quality and amount of food you get which is why people keep coming back and will automatically walk to Piccolo’s for their lunch break.
