What can possibly be added to Matteo’s already stellar reviews from decades of award-​winning service to Melbourne’s epicurean community?
We called upon Matteo and team to celebrate our wedding a couple of years ago, and were delighted at every step, from the presentation and space, to the exquisite food that was the talk amongst our friends for several months (and years!) afterwards.
A recent return to celebrate our anniversary here reminded us of our wonderful experience and reaffirmed the desire for many repeat visits. The highlight for me this time around was the hare loin with rillettes, while my wife loved the ocean barramundi. All in all, an experience to be savoured.

Matteos never disappoints! It just has a patina built up over the years that newbies can’t match. Maybe no whiz bang new architect has given it a super gorgeous modern style like say Tonka (which I also love the) and maybe young über trendoids are not lining up outside, no matter, what you come here for is serious good food blending classic methods with a Japanese twist. Service is professional but warm, and crisp white cloths, good flatware, wine glasses etc enhance the food. It’s no accident that chefs and waitstaff have been around for years, rarely seen in this industry.
It is also excellent value and that goes for the wine list too. Try the $ 44, 2 course with glass of wine at lunch and you will be coming back for dinner, trying the special degustation menu or having a lazy Sunday lunch. Oh and yes you can have conversation here without yelling!

Delicious!
I hosted a private dinner at Matteo’s in August 2014 and my dinner was beyond successful. The food was delicious, the staff was wonderful and the environment was perfect.
With regards to my Private Dinner — I worked with Cheryl Mitting and she was A+. I am based in the United States, so coordinating with each other between the two time-​zones was less than ideal. Cheryl was great and planned my dinner perfectly. My group was more than pleased and they talked about the delicious food for days to follow. I was even able to eat there one of the nights I was in town — amazing. The duck was the best I have ever had. Ever!
Reservations are a must — — but you will not be disappointed. Enjoy and thank you Matteo’s for a wonderful dinner.

Matteos was one of those places that I had heard a lot about but never seemed to have the opportunity to go. When I did finally get the opportunity I was not disappointed!
Each time I have been I have had the express lunch and it’s never failed to impress. The dishes are the perfect size and balance so that you leave feeling satisfied but not like you need a nap!
The three options on the ezpress menu have enough variation that I’m sure there is something for everyone. And the red and white wines match well.
The staff are lovely and I can’t get enough of the door opening when you leave! The dining room is intimate but the large windows, high ceilings and table placement ensures that you don’t feel like a sardine on a busy day.
If you haven’t been I think you should.

What can u say about this restaurant, well all I can say is that no words will describe it, u have no choice but to book it and ENJOY EVERY MOUTH FULL! The only reason I haven’t given it 5 stars is because I’m Australian with an Italian mum, I’m very hard to please!
