It took me a while to find this place, but I’m glad that I finally did. From the outside it doesn’t seem much and would usually lead to assumptions that«it’s probably closed.» However, it remains to be one of the most popular bars and one of the most packed, around. Fantastic and extensive drinks selection, however, the focus here is more on the cocktails/spirits side of things. There’s also little bites to eat and snacks if that kind of thing is one to suit your tastes. It’s taken me far too long to actually get down here, but now that I have, the only problem will be finding a spare seat, as it does get very busy inside. Beware the hipsters.

Good venue, had a function here and the drinks are great, space awesome however food not amazing for the price. PLUS bar staff didn’t tell me my tab was coming to a close until it was nearly $ 200OVER what I’d put down. Highly unprofessional way for management to make extra money from functions.

If I could give LongPlay six stars I would. Everything about this place works. Amazing atmosphere. My kind of design. Clever and traditional cocktails. Attentive and informed staff. Some great wines. Yummy food. Small and intimate. And it has a cinema out the back for when you want to test your latest before you send it off to Uppsala, Gympie or Berlin.

Having a drink at Long Play is really like having a drink at a friend’s house. Obscurely hidden with the blinds closed and only a little sign on the glass window, you could easily walk straight past this great bar, even though it’s on a busy street. The bartenders here are friendly and there are 2 different rooms where you can sip a drink or two. The front room has a few cosy booths as well as the bar and the back room another small room, full of tables. We didn’t make it for the movie in the outback cinema, but will be coming back soon to hopefully catch one and have a tipple.

I gotta say, I don’t frequent many ‘bar’ type bars, I’m generally more of a pub guy. LongPlay has been a sweet awakening… The folk at LongPlay know about making the customer happy. They are super friendly, they serve very good cocktails, they play good tunes and they even show movies. They’ve started showing limited/no release films out the back here on a regular basis and their selections have had me intrigued. They’ll pull out obscure rockumentaries and rarities and for this I salute them. My buddies turned me on to Handsome Sailors(the drink, not the seamen) and this spot has now become one of my favourites to stop in for a nightcap after dinner or a night out. We rocked up one night as the dude was locking up and he even opened the bar back up for us for just out of good nature. He even let us spin a few records and we did some cocktail sampling. He’s a champ, this is a winner. Go there.

Innocuous, unassuming, almost unnoticeable from the outside. Longplay is a cool little bar in Fitzroy North that brings colour to an otherwise sleepy residential area. It’s very easy to miss. You can’t even tell it is a bar unless you go right up to the window and peek through the blinds. There is a tiny Longplay logo etched onto the window. It is next to the Malaymas restaurant if you are still struggling. If you want a low key night out(or should that be a colourful night in), then Longplay is exactly what you are after. Owner Tim really provides great hospitality to a small crowd that love to indulge in great wines, twists to classic cocktails(think jalapeño margarita for example), and an interesting yet small tapas menu. It’s a great place to indulge with friends. They will also cater to anyone that wants to show something on their small cinema in the back. Would be a great venue for a showing for a happy crowd.

Located in Fitzroy North, Long Play, named after LP records, is a bar/cinema/awesome place. Owners Tim and Adam have definitely created a bar with a relaxed and welcoming vibe. Long Play is easily missed with its small logo and closed blinds, but inside is a warm venue furnished with wooden stools and benches and dim lighting. Out the back you’ll find a cinema(yes, a full on cinema with chairs and a big screen) and another space with booths and tables perfect for a private function. Great wine, cocktails, and food. What’s there not to love about this place? Try their jalapeño margarita — Tim infuses the tequila with jalapenos — spicy, sweet, and sour perfectly mixed. They also make a mean espresso martini. I usually come for a bottle of wine or a couple of cocktails and food. Love, love, love the semolina gnocchi and the roast lamb chops crusted with herbs. For four people with two bottles of wine, four dishes to share, and a cheese plate, we paid about $ 50 per person — evenly split between food and drinks. Although the food is on the smaller side, it is reasonably priced($ 10-$ 22). Hands down, my favourite venue in Fitzroy North.

There’s a cinema out the back that you can hire out. It seats about 20 and you can show whatever you want. You can’t take food in there but you can take your perfect margarita or whatever classic cocktail you’ve ordered. The bartenders here are a talented lot. They know what they’re doing and they’ll make you a delicious drink, whatever that may be. The food is also great — simple flavours that really bring out the best in each dish. The room itself is pared back, elegant and not at all showy. I can’t fault this bar. It’s almost perfect, and that’s the highest compliment I can pay it because to be absolutely perfect would be boring.

LongPlay is the kind of bar you expect to find in downtown Manhattan — exclusive, secretive and full of the young and gorgeous. Luckily for us it’s just in North Fitzroy. LongPlay looks very low-key from the outside, almost like an accountants office, but step inside and you’ll feel like you are on the set of Mad Men. Hundreds of spirits line the walls as the incredibly talented barkeep whip you up a classic cocktail in seconds(I highly recommend the margarita. Wow.) Tim, co-owner and co-bartender will also create a delicious tapas-style meal right in front of your eyes — think lamp chops or saganaki. Multi-talented much? But the biggest surprise of this secretive venue is the outdoor cinema located just down the hall — you wouldn’t even know it was there! The smoking area can get a little squishy, and the fact that there is only one toilet means you may have to wait a bit, but all of that is truly worth it.
