Sometimes I get a craving for something cheap and sugary and you can’t really go past Maid Marion’s. It’s the cheapest shop in Napoleon St by a long shot, and the food inside is just so deliciously simple — I really can’t explain it. It doesn’t have a fancy interior or anything, but if you’re coming to buy pastries then I don’t see why that matters.

How anyone can give Maid Marion’s anything less than 5 stars is beyond me — there is nothing that comes out of this patisserie that isn’t absolutely delicious. The walls are adorned with awards for best this, that, or the other from the Perth Royal Show and just one bite into the pasties or sausage rolls will tell you why. My family has come here for probably near on 20 years and the quality has never wavered, whether it be the savoury foods, or the sweets like the vanilla and caramel slices. The shop is basic but who cares its all about the quality with Maid Marion’s and it never ceases to deliver.

This little shop does exactly what it says on the tin. It has pastries, breads and coffee, the holy trinity of scrumptiousness. Whereby Cottesloe is full of expensive artisan shops selling Mediterranean goods and ethnic groceries, Maid Marion’s goes back to basics and succeeds in doing simple things well. They also do ready made lunches but if you’re going to come here then come for the breads and cakes, they’re carbohydratetastic.

If you like things cheap and cheerful, Maid Marions is the ideal place. There’s nothing fancy or pretentious about it — it’s just a little shop with a fridge full of baked goods. I popped in here to grab a bite to eat at lunchtime, and went for a very homemade looking pot of honey chicken and sundried tomato pasta. The friendly lady behind the counter heated it up for me and I sat at one of the little tables out the front of the shop and watched the shoppers go by. The pasta looked quite tasty — sadly, it looked better than it tasted. It wasn’t totally horrible — I did eat it. I just didn’t enjoy it very much. It tasted a lot like salad cream, and neither the chicken nor the sundried tomato had much flavour. I wasn’t expecting gourmet food, but neither was I expecting a pot full of salad cream. Oh well. Maid Marions also has a selection of freshly made rolls, with lots of fillings to choose from. Perhaps that would have been a safer option. They also have an extensive selection of cakes and pies, and some beautiful celebration cakes. It’s a nice, homey place, and I’d definitely go for the cakes — just maybe avoid the pasta!
