I am a self-confessed movie buff. Sounds good, but unfortunately I am not a connoisseur of GOOD films but of super crappy 80s and 90s films — the films of my youth! So latest releases do not mean a great deal to me but instead a vast selection of the classics(and the crap). Thank God for Video Busters. Here you will find that TV-movie you saw 5 minutes of 12 years ago, or that Drew Barrymore rom-com that you can never remember the name of. You can also buy DVD’s and VHS’ here, but I recommend you stick with hiring as only REAL crap is available to buy(sorry, I don’t mean to offend anyone who is a fan of straight-to-video releases starring one of the lesser known Baldwin’s.) Check it out if you live near by, but definitely keep in mind that Video Busters is a place to find the films of your childhood, not that thriller starring Matt Damon.

Looking at it from the outside, Video Busters seems to have been overtaken by some cheap imports business flogging ugly furniture and nick nacks. Go inside, past the front room full of all that garbage, though and you’ll find an old-school video store with a massive range of movie and TV titles and some very good deals, particularly midweek. The television DVD section is particularly large for a video store, with heaps of shows you wouldn’t find at Blockbuster and the like. The art-house section is also really good. Really, the value is in the fact that they have the space to stock so many DVDs that they don’t have to be constantly getting rid of old films — there are a lot of gems here that have been otherwise lost in the changeover from DVD rental culture to buying DVDs from JB and online downloads and the like. There’s bound to be lots of titles you’ve never seen before or that you haven’t thought about in years.

Video Busters is a weird and wonderful place. Sharing a giant room with an Ishka-style bric-à-brac shop, and containing a sad looking retail section of its own, selling 2-dollar shop style crap of various kinds, as well as a small section of computers for paid internet access, Video Busters has a DIY vibe that makes it pretty much the polar opposite to your typical Blockbuster Video experience. The DVD selection available is awesome, with so many difficult to find art house, cult, classic and doco gems in stock. Also, having half of the store laid out by Director is a big bonus. Video Busters is also really cheap. For example, you can get 8 movies, including 3 new releases, for $ 10 on any day. They also have a 50% off late fees policy if you can pay the fine on return.

Video Busters in Collingwood is by no means my local video store with a Blockbuster and Video Dogs closer to home. Yet it is my first choice video shop by a long way for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is the cheapest video store there is. On Tuesdays you can get any new release for only $ 1. There are also other specials meaning you can get hire 10 weekly DVDs for $ 6. Secondly, the selection of DVDs is far greater than Blockbuster or Video Dogs. You can get new releases, art-house movies, TV series, documentaries and much more obscure movies than these other stores. Thirdly, I like the way they sort their movies. Their collection is primarily sorted by director and it makes it easy to know exactly what you like. Fourthly, unlike Video Dogs they are open until late. 10pm each day. Finally, they have a cheesy jingle in store that is extremely endearing. In short, if you have a choice of video stores, go to Video Busters. It will be worth the extra ride or walk.
