LORDGLADSTONE(Chippendale, NSW) Burgers ain’t cheap in Sydney’s inner city and most of the time most places justify their $ 18+ price by serving burgers with fries. BLAHH. I don’t want fries and I don’t want an overpriced burger! I was stoked to find the Lord Gladstone does a special on Monday & Tues offering $ 10 burgers. and with fries. I heard the burgs were good too. It’s a pub, you order at the counter, take a buzzer and wait for it to buzz. The menu offers snacks, salads, mains and burgers. The burger offering is a simple affair with 3 beef option, a chicken and a Philly Cheese Steak. The ‘Bushwick’ burger fit my review criteria consisting of beef, cheese, onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato and house sauce. The bun was excellent. Soft, puffy, fresh, held together perfectly and flattened nicely after first bite. Patty was one of the best I’ve had. The usual stuff I love was all there: no herbs/spices, pink in the middle, large grind size, etc. What took this patty to the next level was the charring on the pattie’s crust. Dang it was tasty. Not only did it add texture but the flavor… Wow dude, best charring I’ve tasted. Salad was good but it was frustrating the lettuce was shredded) please change to leaf form). Onions were subtle which was great and pickles cut through the overall creamy taste of everything else. House sauce was the type I love and it was plentiful. When I quizzed the chef about the ingredients it wasn’t far off the one I make at home. Now this burger was a corker and I’ll be back… Albeit only one specials days. Highly recommended.

The vibe was good, the beer was good, the burger look good but it was a cold soggy mess when I picked it up. Pretty disappointed with it but maybe that how they serve food on a Friday night. I will give them another chance though.

Heard good things about this place so I came here for their $ 10 Lunch special on Monday’s and Tuesdays. You can get a burger with fries ranging from cheeseburger, vegan burger, to fried chicken burger and a few others. The fit out is pretty cool, large outdoor area and chill vibe and staff. Food came out rather quick, I thought $ 10 was a great deal so I ordered a fried chicken burger and Bushwick burger. Bushwick burger is beef, cheese, onion, pickle, lettuce, tomato sauce, on an nyc style. Hold up, what’s an NYC style bun? I’ve spent a lot of time in New York City and have never heard of such a thing… NYC style pizza sure. NYC style bun? This is some faux BS trying to win customers in an attempt to seem more authentic methinks… Anyway, the fried chicken burger was great, definitely up there with the best in Sydney, comparable to Mary’s, Pub Life(prior to the new one,) and Pinbone. The Bushwick burger on the other hand was OK. It seriously just tasted like a Whopper from Hungry Jack’s. Not a bad thing… but nothing special either, because if I wanted an imitation of something I would have just gone to the original. Will have to come back to try the cheeseburger. Chicken is 4.5÷5 Bushwick is 3⁄5

The Lord Gladstone is a modest looking place, «tastefully» dingy does well in this pub. Although small in size, it has a reasonable court yard and is a pretty good setting for a casual catch up. What surprised me most are the burgers here. I ordered the Double Double which is a chicken burger, cheeseburger and a side of chips and not a crumb was left behind. They were extremely generous with their servings, the meat was juicy, I would put it in the same league than the famous Marys burgers. I believe that speaks for itself!

So this place has had a humble renovation and instead of a dingy low lit shit hole that had smoke machine parties every other weekend it’s now totally acceptable to eat/drink here during the week. The pub is now a well lit clean venue with a great kitchen. The cheeseburger is up there with cheeky burger and Mary’s for me plus it’s only $ 10(with fries) on Mondays and Tuesday’s(usually $ 15) It’s a classic American styled cheeseburger with ketchup, mustard and pickles. The fried chicken burger also $ 10 on Monday and Tuesday(usually $ 17) and taste how a fried chicken burger should, I personally prefer this fried chicken burger to Mary’s. I hate Mayonnaise but the Sriracha Mayo they’re running here is legit! Looking forward to trying more of the menu, do yourself a favour and get a burger from here you won’t regret it. Five stars is for how fucking good and cheap their burgers are.
