The French Lettuce

Because it is Tuesday night, and the mood takes me, time for a quick review of the wonderful French Lettuce, in Haiku form:
Delicious pastries,
Soy coffee amazing too,
Perfect sugar hit!
OK, Haiku Tuesday inclinations aside, the presentation of cakes and slices in this patisserie is divine. My coffee partner ordered the vanilla slice, and was very impressed with what she described as a super smooth and creamy custard filling, and crisp, sweet pastry. The woman was impressed, and happy to share her opinion with the world… well, me because I was there, but nonetheless, impressed! I ordered a coffee, mostly because I was still full from lunch, but also because looking at the food on offer, I was fairly certain that I would be doing well to unearth a vegan treat among the towers and lines of baked cake and pastry goodness, where gold leaf reigned supreme. Admittedly, I didn’t ask, but the risk that there may not be something vegan friendly on offer won’t stop me from heading back in future just to make sure nothing slipped under my vegan radar. I’m thorough like that, and besides… the coffee was good, and served in a beautiful Degas decorated cup. All in all, an aesthetic feast.

Best Vanilla slice in Melbourne ?
Well I guess I won’t eat a lot of them here anymore.
I was really disappointed with it, didn’t taste bad but nothing amazing.
Had a raspberry/​chocolate mousse/​custard mix in glass and it was just… fat.

UPDATE: in addition to the mind-​blowing cheesecake, they also make DELICIOUS meat pies.

Wow. If you are in need of a cake for a special occasion, you definitely need to check out French Lettuce — they make cakes for the rich and famous (note: not exactly rich and famous, but they did make Bert’s 70^th birthday cake.)
They can also do wedding cakes, quirky cakes and possibly even an erotic cake (if you ask nicely enough.)
More-​so than that, they also have fantastic coffee and smaller slices so it is perfect if you are looking to have a ladylike afternoon with mum. As Alex has said, they boast the Best Vanilla Slice in Melbourne and boy is it rich.
They are in a bit of an awkward location at the far end of Nicholson street near Alexandra Parade but it is definitely worth the trip if you are looking to treat yourself.
