I think you can measure civilization by how late you can get breakfast. All day being the pinnacle. A breakfast service that ends at 10am something like the dark ages. Cafeteria walks the line here. They stop serving breakfast at 12. Edwardian era maybe. If you’re a local or in the crack-of-dawn Beach Road cycling set, this will not be a concern. However. I am neither. I’m more in the cycle-yeah-I-guess-after-a-coffee-and-if-the-weather-is-good set, so unfortunately I missed out on breakfast. I made do with a toastie. Which was more of a deconstructed toastie really — certainly didn’t fit into your traditional jaffle camp. The portion was generous and it was tasty, if a little heavy on the oil. Your objective may be a record cycle run to Café tour. However, if your objective is «destination: eggs» — then maybe get up earlier or consider going elsewhere.

Went here with my partner and our good friend for a nice couple-y brunch. I loved the ambiance of the restaurant – it’s playing off a traditional café theme with a bit of beach décor and an upscale twist. The menu was interesting and the specials provided a lot of fresh choices. I loved produce-heavy meals and they offered that. They served a salad featuring giant cous cous, which was interesting, to say the least! I opted for the fish and chips, and it was lovely. Not too greasy, the batter on the fish was crisp, the chips were FANTASTIC and thinly cut with a nice dipping sauce, and the greens were dressed nicely and provided a good alternative to the fatty fish and chips. The pavlova deserves a special mention, however. I don’t know if they made the pavlova in-house, but it was beautiful. All of the desserts looked really beautiful, but the pavlova was topped with fresh fruit and was perfectly crisp and chewy and perfect. One of the best I’ve ever had. Still curious if they make the desserts themselves. I guess the only thing stopping them from being 5-stars is that our server was a little brash/inattentive and the price. I think the high prices are to be expected, but service needs to be a ten – I would pay double for fantastic service, seriously. But I’d happily go again for a nice brunch meal before hitting the beach.

A good food choice for those cycling and running along Beach Road as you pass from suburb to suburb. After a 15 km run, my group of 4 – 5 had trouble finding a spot to eat, with the whole village frequenting this spot on Saturday and Sunday. Twenty to thirty minutes later we seated and had a tasty brunch with poached eggs on toast, topped with watercress and bacon. While it tasted fine, the portion size was quite small for $ 18. Especially after a long run, I felt like I could eat at least two of them. Coffee/tea were priced around $ 4 – 5, so quite average. According to my friends, this is the best place to eat brunch in Black Rock, but I think it’s worth a commute inland for a more rewarding lunch.
