A friend took me on a magical mystery tour of her local area and we ended up at the ‘concourse’ in Beaumaris. This isn’t usually an area that I end up in as it is the back blocks of the beach suburbs. I love the layout of the concourse. It creates a one way street around a square with a village green. This allows for easy parking and safer way for shoppers on foot. My friend took us to Sing Tao Chinese Restaurant — a Beaumaris local serving authentic Cantonese cuisine for over forty years. This is the old school local Chinese restaurant that you read about in Labor Party political history books where the faction bosses are down the local Chinese restaurant holding meetings or 70s Australian film and literature. Every Gen X kid has a memory of being taken to one of these places. Decorated in a traditional Chinese red design with lanterns, the tables are round and have the requisite Lazy Susan in the middle. I absolutely love the décor of this place. It was kitch in the best possible way. The ceiling tiles were gorgeous. Apparently the oriental dining room was hand-crafted by Grandpa Yip Chong Leung«Jo Goong». You can certainly see the craftmanship. The meals were generously portioned and tasted delicious. The owners also hold special nights like Chinese New Year with entertainment and special set menus. I found the prices to be very reasonable considering the size and quality of the meals. The bar seemed comprehensive and they have good specials on imported Asian beers like TsingTao. All in all, I’d definitely recommend Sing Tao, especially for large groups and families.
