Who would want KFC when you have Grass Chicken just minutes away? Grass Chicken is a tasty, tantalizing takeout place on Hindley Street. They do a variety of chicken meals, cold rolls and salads. It is all prepared Fresh whilst you wait. Price wise it’s pretty decent, most meals ranging $ 10-$ 15 but that’s what you get for most Take Away these days. Grass chicken is convenient as you can din in, take away, and order ahead online! Other tasty treats include their Rice Burger, and a sort of pizza topping shindig over fried chicken — seafood too but since I am allergic my comments would be interrupted by projectiles. So let’s not listen to me for that ;) Sometimes it’s a little oily and admittedly it’s hard to eat with wooden utensils but dammit this is a fast food place, not a Michelin star restaurant, so 5 stars for you Grass Chicken. You GO Grass Chicken! Also go get the sweet potato fries. Shh, no questions. Just go.

Grass Chicken is an odd little gem on Hindley Street. I was tempted inside by a free sample of their Chicken Popcorn, which was crispy, juicy and very tasty indeed. Once inside, I was encouraged to try one of their combos. I chose the Chicken Rice Burger, with sweet potato chips and an iced tea. I was then upsold some of their fried chicken. The Chicken Rice Burger is an odd and slightly impractical dish, essentially being a chicken burger with patties of rice in the place of the bun. The rice tends to stick to the paper the burger is wrapped in, so this required getting your face right into the paper, which is a little messy. The burger is tasty enough, however, to make this minor indignity entirely worth it. The sweet potato chips are battered and seem to be lightly sugared. They were entirely delicious and are absolutely recommended. Sweet potato chips are often very disappointing, but Grass Chicken do them really well. The fried chicken is fried chicken. It’s batter coating is very crunchy(be careful not to attack it too quickly, it wouldn’t be hard to lacerate the roof of your mouth with it), but like the chicken popcorn, it’s very juicy and not as oily as you’d expect. The motto of this place seems to be «anything you want, so long as it’s fried chicken», which leads to some real culinarily oddities, such as the«Pizza Schnitzel», which is a fried chicken schnitzel, layered with pizza toppings. They do branch out a little though, offering squid, octopus and tofu all fried the same way as the chicken, as well as a couple of vegetarian dishes. Their iced tea is refreshing and not overly sweet. A welcome compliment to the fried chicken. There is a lot to try here and, if nothing else, this place acts as the fried chicken equivalent of the various artisan burger joints that have popped up all over town. KFC had better watch out. This food is equivalently priced, far tastier and doesn’t leave you regretting your decision the moment you finish eating. Well worth checking out.
