Alter Keller

We stopped in for dinner on a rainy day in Rothenburg. The food and ambiance of this place are first rate. The prices were good. Because of the rain seating was limited and consequently many potential customers who came in after us were turned away. They were all asked if they had a reservation and so that is something worth looking into.

We found this fantastic authentic German restaurant by accident, tucked away a few blocks from the main square. Great food!!!

We have been avoiding Rick Steves’ food recommendations since we had been disappointed with them. I think he chooses places off of ambiance and not off of food taste.
There wasn’t very many options in Rothenburg to choose from so we settled on this place even though it is recommended by Rick.
We enjoyed our meals I had sausage and my husband had the cheese spatzle.
The ambiance is neat and the waitresses wear traditional German dresses.
I enjoyed the wine I got, but when I asked for the house wine I didn’t think it would be 6 euros!
We were lucky to get a table, because almost every table was reserved for a huge bus tour group that luckily didn’t come in until we were almost done. We saw several people get turned away.

We ate here on May 8, 2013 for dinner. Rothenburg was our last stop for the day while driving up the Romantic Road from Fussen to Frankfurt.
Café Alter Keller was one of two restaurants that looked promising according to tripadvisor. Immediately I noticed their outdoor seating was packed. That’s a good thing since it usually indicates the place is at least decent. We chose to sit inside, there were a few other tables having dinner but they were only ¼ full inside.
Other then the kitchen staff, there was one woman and 2 men working the tables. Our waitress was very friendly and offered suggestions on what to order. She wore traditional looking clothing which was kind of cool.
The food was actually quite good. It was one of the better tasting meals we had in Germany. The other really good dinner we had in Germany was in Munich (Seehaus in the Englishchner Garden), but that dinner was also more expensive then this one. Prior to this dinner we had a lot of Bavarian food; our waitress informed us their food was Franconian. This probably explains why we enjoyed this dinner so much since we were tired of Bavarian food.
The restaurant was clean and did not have any odd smells. The service was friendly and fast (fast for German standards). We found German dining service in general to be a much slower pace then other parts of the world. I’m not referring to the time it takes to dine. Many cultures take 1 – 3 hours for dinner. I’m referring to the time it takes the servers to come and take your order, to ask if there is anything needed such as more beverages in-​between, and to bring the bill.
By the time we were done with dinner, it looked like they were starting to clean up for the night. A man brought our bill. He seemed to be the manager or owner. We used our BMW Visa since they didn’t take Amex. When the man brought back the bill to sign, he started talking about BMWs. He commented that we were paying with a BMW credit card and said he had the same thing. Then he said he was a big fan of BMWs and he had a 3 series touring. Then he proceeded to show me pictures of his car, and pictures he took at BMW Welt and the BMW Museum. I told him that I was just there the previous week. It was really cool randomly running into a fellow BMW enthusiast. He told me what his dream BMW was. I kind of felt bad about telling him the reason I was in Europe was to do European Delivery on that same car; so I didn’t say anything. LOL.
I would recommend this place if you’re in the area. If you’re a fellow BMW enthusiast you might have someone there to talk cars with.

Das Restaurant liegt etwas abseits der Touristenströme in einem kleinen Seitengässchen. Wir wurden freundlich empfangen und sehr schnell die Speisekarte in Händen. Das Essen — bei mir das Rumpsteak, bei meiner Frau das Schweinefilet — waren hervorragend. Die Bedienung war sehr unaufdringlich aber immer zur richtigen Zeit zur Stelle. Preislich war die Sache in Ordnung. Wir würden das Restaurant immer wieder besuchen. Guten Appetit!

Es geht doch kaum etwas darüber als an einem verschneiten Winterabend am warmen Kachelofen zu sitzen! Dazu leckeres (und zudem sehr preiswertes) Essen, eine charmante und aufmerksame Bedienung und ein Gläschen Wein und der Abend kann nur perfekt werden. Genau so erlebt hier im Alten Keller. Dieses rustikale, schnuckelige Restaurant kann ich nur empfehlen. Jederzeit wieder!

Wer in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in einer urigen fränkischen Weinstube sehr gut Essen und Trinken will kommt am Alten Keller nicht vorbei. Kurz gesagt, es stimmt einfach alles:
— freundliche, zuvorkommende Bedienung
— sehe schönes Ambiente
sehr gutes Essen.

Hier fanden wir nach langem Suchen und enttäuschenden Erlebnissen wahre Gastfreundschaft, Herzlichkeit und ein tolles Preis-​Leistungsverhältnis.
Schöné Atmosphäre, rustikal und warm. Das Essen war sehr schmackhaft und liess keine Wünsche übrig. Wir wurden sehr freundlich bedient und mussten, trotz gut besuchtem Restaurant, nicht lange auf Getränke und Speisen warten.
Beim nächsten Besuch in Rothenburg o.T. immer wieder gerne! :-)

Das Restaurant Alter Keller liegt etwas Abseits in einer Nebenstraße. Uns sprach die große Stekauswahl an, die zu guten Preisen angeboten wurden und wir wurden nicht enttäuscht: Eine ansprechende Einrichtung, nette Bedienung, schneller Service und gutes Essen zu vernünftigen Preisen. Wir würden wieder hingehen!

Kurzfassung: Gemütliche kleine Wirtschaft mit rustikalem Ambiente und freundlicher Bedienung.
Hintergrundinfo: Seltsamerweise gab es bisher hier in RK keine Rezension zu diesem Lokal. Die Weinstube ist nicht bloß eine Weinstube, sondern definitiv ein Restaurant und wurde uns vom Hotel «Gotisches Haus» empfohlen, als Steak-​Alternative zum «Klosterstüble». Da wir im romantischen Rothenburg mehr Lust auf «gutbürgerlich» hatten als auf Steaks, hatten wir uns für das «Klosterstüble» entschieden und dort zwei Gänge zu Abend gegessen, was auch kein Fehler war. Zum dritten Gang, dem Dessert, wechselten wir dann in die «Weinstube Alter Keller».
Die Lage in einer stillen Nebengasse führt wohl dazu, dass hier weniger Touristen herkommen, obwohl das Lokal schon von außen sehr pittoresk wirkt, mit einem Steinbrunnen davor, Blumen, Freisitz mit bunten Tischdecken und Sonnenschirmen.
Auch das Ambiente innen ist sehr gemütlich, mit Kachelofen, robust-​rustikalen Holzstühlen, gepolsterten Sitzbänken und uriger Holzdecke. Dass die Bedienungen Dirndl tragen, rundet das idyllische Bild ab.
Hätten wir gewusst, dass es auf der Karte keineswegs nur Steaks gibt, sondern auch regionale Hausmannskost wie Schäufele, dann wären wir wohl auch zum Hauptgang hierher gekommen.
So mussten wir uns auf den Nachtisch beschränken und wählten aus dem Kuchenangebot den Apfelstrudel (3,50), dazu heiße Schokolade (2,60) und Latte macchiato (2,80). Die Qualität des Strudels war etwas enttäuschend, denn er wirkte matschig und vom Blätterteig merkte man wenig, aber es war dennoch sehr schön, den Abend hier ausklingen zu lassen, und zum richtigen Essen kommen wir bei Gelegenheit gerne wieder.

We went based on a Rick Steve’s review but were underwhelmed. Admittedly, we were in between lunch and dinner, but… The atmosphere IS great (quaint German-​y hunting lodge-​esque) and so is the location (off the beaten tourist path but still inside the old walls). But the service (one guy) was downright stoic, and the place smelled musty. Perhaps August is the slow season? But I don’t think we’d go back.
