Wankbahn – Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG

Wir haben die Wank schon öfter bestiegen. Es ist der Lieblingsberg meiner Eltern. Man kann schön rauf– und runterfahren oder ihn auch zu Fuß besteigen. Es ist angenehm rauf zufahren und angenehm runter zu laufen. Das dauert ca. 2,5 3 Stunden. Es ist gut ausgeschildert. Und wenn man unterwegs schlapp macht kann man immer noch bei der Mittelstation einsteigen (bis dahin 1,5 Std.) und den Rest mit der Bahn fahren. Sollte man unbedingt machen. Auch für Ungeübte zum Anfang ideal.

A great cable car ride up Mount Wank and you get to see the beautiful Alpine scenery along the way. This is one of the smaller mountains in the area and the scenery from up above is spectacular. It costs about € 22 to get up and back down if I remember correctly.
We took it on the way up and walked down hill for about 5 hours and really enjoyed the walk. There are many stops along the way to enjoy a drink or a meal and they are well marked on the maps or hiking trails. The trails can be quite steep or not easy to walk on and you need to concentrate as it can be quite slippery.
A great way to spend a day if you happen to be in the area. Bring plenty of water and pack some warm clothes in case you are delayed and need more time to get back down.

I can’t hate on the Wankbahn.
1. Ok, it’s childish — but «WankBahn» is a little funny if you’re an English speaker. Even better is the bar at the top called the Wank Haus.
2. It’s WAY cheaper than the Zupspitze ascent at € 22 pp. The problem with going up the Zugspitze (besides the crazy cost) is that it takes a long time and of course, you can’t see the Zugspitze when you’re on it!
3. Burg Wank is about 1800m tall, so you get a tremendous view of Zugspitze and the whole local range. Plus if it’s cloudy or crappy at higher altitude it my be just fine here.
4. Instead of a big cable car, you get a tiny 4 person car. It’s terrifying!!! But the views are worth it.
5. I think far fewer tourists go up this cable car, so it’s likely to be much less crowded at peak times. Today, there were maybe 4 – 5 people at the peak total.
It was my idea to ride a cable car, and I picked the WankBahn so we could see Zugspitze and save some Euros. I’m terrified of heights so imagine my face when we reached the station after a terrifying ascent… only to find that we were just halfway and the second half was WAY steeper. I almost schiesse’d my pants… but we made it safely and took some amazing photos.

Super Ausblick bei gutem Wetter.

Alleine die Fahrt in den kleinen, geschlossenen Gondeln ist ein Augenschmaus! Für ‘Höhenängstliche: Die Gondeln sind höchstens ca. 20 mtr. über dem Boden; also wirklich kein Grund zur Panik.
Sehr freundliches Personal, Tal-​und Bergstation sind –excellent-​bewirtschaftet. Ausstiegsmöglichkeit in der Mittelstation, von dort aus führt ein romantischer Wanderweg zur Gamshütte.
