Spicelands

Little India in Frankfurt. Fußläufig zum Bahnhof, direkt neben der Kaiserhofpassage und Saravanaa Bhavan (
) liegt dieser indische Supermarkt. Ich liebe diesen Laden, könnte Stunden hier verbringen und stöbern. Es gibt hier wirklich alles, was man für die Zubereitung indischer Curries benötigt: Gewürze, Reis, Chutneys, Linsen, Pickles, Papadam, Crackers, Rotis, Naan, frisches Gemüse, welches ich bislang nur auf Märkten in Sri Lanka und Indien gesehen habe. Sogar die originale Mixed Fruit Jam, die es immer bei meiner sri lankanischen Gastfamilie «Made in Colombo, Sri Lanka» habe ich entdeckt. Auch — für uns Europäer — ungewöhnliche — Kochutensilien, z.B. Pittu Steamer oder Pfannen für die leckeren Hoppers aus Sri Lanka gibt es. Für diejenigen, die keine Lust haben, selbst zu kochen, gibt es indische Fertiggerichte in Tüten und auch gefroren. Die schmecken zwar nicht wie die unschlagbar selbstgekochten Curries meiner Gastmutti in Sri Lanka, geben aber irgendwie ein typisches Indien-​Feeling. An der Kasse kann man außerdem täglich frische indische Snacks, z.B. Samosa, Vade (Linsenküchlein) etc. kaufen. Und — für eingefleischte Indienfans — es gibt sogar das leckere Kulfi Eis. Der Laden hat irgendwie immer auf. Sogar an Feiertagen. Genial. Ach so, manchmal muss man sich mit Händen und Füßen verständigen :-)

This is where I do the majority of my shopping in Frankfurt. I love coming into Spicelands and perusing around looking for all the things I need… and don’t need!
The market has a very Indian focus, but also carries a variety of goods from the Caribbean, Asia, and the Middle East. You can get cheap young coconuts, amla berries, avocados, and even fresh curry leaves (which are surprisingly difficult to find in Frankfurt) here. But be aware– the curry leaves go fast once a shipment arrives! I stock up on them and freeze them when I can find them.
If you’re carrying other bags into Spicelands, you must leave them at the front counter. Not really a surprise given the area of the city the shop is in, but this may be a nuisance to many customers. Try to make Spicelands your first stop on your shopping around town if possible!
Not only does Spicelands carry every spice you could possibly need (seriously never go to Rewe to buy overpriced spices… go here!), they also sell incense, Indian cooking accessories, and beers from all around the world. If you can’t find something in Spicelands, just ask the staff and they will helpfully assist you or let you know where you can get it or tell you when the next order will arrive.

Has everything you need still at mid night. The Indian sweets are great, nearly all drinks available and diverse selection of gummy bears.
