We went here last year for my grandmother’s birthday, and all I can say is that it was alright, nothing special. Now, to qualify, I have to say that the dinner did fall on the night of the German National Team’s semi-final game against Spain, so people’s attention was diverted. Still, when you bring a large party to a restaurant, you expect something better, especially an old and established place like this. As we kind of expected, we were greeted by the sight of a mostly deserted restaurant, with the last family other than ourselves leaving shortly after our arrival to get to a public viewing spot. So it was just us, the waitress, and the kitchen staff. Good call for service, right? Well, not so much. The drinks kept coming, with Stauder and other selections flowing fairly quickly, but the food took a while. It was pfifferling season, so everything was mushroom-infused, which actually went well with the more old-fashioned dishes there. Unfortunately the dishes themselves were just alright. The meat was a little tough, the sauce fairly bland, and the portion sizes huge for German standards. Add to that the waitress’ desire to get away as quickly as possible to watch the game, and it made for an alright evening, not quite befitting the occassion, but that was partially bad timing. Ok if you are in the mood for traditional German and happen to find yourself in Stadtwald.
