Will not go back.
Today the first time we ate something at this famous mexican styled joint, the last two trips they were either booked for party or were out of tacos/guacamole…Anyways, i’ll be frank while my german may not be super fluent, I know more than enough to order food. The server was very rude when things were not clear with us, and acted very irritated because we took a bit of time choosing our sauces or asking him to clarify what all could we do. His neighboring server could understand us, but he could only show his annoyance. By the time it was ready, I already wanted to drop it all and just leave.
It was expensive for tacos, and not out of the world… of course after a frustrating and rude interaction the food cannot save my desire to return.

Wir gehen gerne hier essen. Preis-​Leistung-​Vehältnis stimmt definitiv. Wir können den Laden wärmstens empfehlen!

Nicht Mexico und auch nicht West Coast aber trotzdem extrem Bueno. Die Burrito-​Station in der nähe des Rudolfplatzes ist echt ein kleiner Geheimtipp. Hier Gibt es denn leckeren im Imbiss in verschieden Varianten, klassisch, im Taco oder als naked Burrito ohne Brot, auch als Salat ist möglich. Den Inhalt selber kann man sich selber zusammen stellen, das Personal führt einen Gut durch das vielfältige Angebot der Ingrediens. Für Studenten und Schüler gibt es sogar noch kostenlos ein Getränk zum essen, also Ausweis nicht vergessen.

In a perfect world where Sausalito’s is rated minus one, Taco Bell one star and, Taco Loco (Zülpicher Platz) four stars I would give four stars for BABC.
You can chose whatever you like on your burrito. The food is well seasoned and of good quality. Of course, you will enjoy the very special typical Mexican cumin flavor but, in an acceptable manner.
Since I’m German and love to complain I would prefer just a bit more intense scent of black pepper and chipotle.

Finally a decent California type of Mexican store. Food is good. Not so expensive. The place is nice. There is a student meal, at least I hope it is still available (been a while since I last been there). The food fresh. Service is friendly. Looking forward to next time.

Nice food, ordered naked burritos, tasty and spivey, could feel heat for sometimes, jalapeños were spicy too. Nice food, credit card machine does not work.

I love BABC! My husband and I stumbled across it while on a day trip to Cologne and I can’t tell you how excited we were to finally get some decent «Mexican» food.
I’ve been twice now and one of the owners, a guy from Texas, is just such a pleasure to be around. He’s friendly and happy to provide recommendations. He got a little sassy when I compared BABC to Chipotle, but whattaya gonna do — they’re essentially exactly the same. Which, if you’re an American living in Germany, is a much-​needed break from all the heavy German food. It’s a compliment!
The first time I was here I got the special — a chicken and lime burrito — which was pretty good. Enough for two meals, which the owner happily helped me pack up to take home. My second time I got a more traditional burrito with all the fixin’s which was super delicious.
So basically what I’m saying is: I will continue to come here every time I’m in Cologne. And if you like burritos, you should too.

Eigentlich würde ich gerne 5* geben, denn die Burritos sind jedes Mal sehr lecker und ich komme gerne hier her. Mein Favorit ist der Naked Burrito — schön scharf. Hier findet sich für jeden Geschmack die richtige Zusammenstellung. Bohnen, Reis, Fleisch (oder nicht), Salsa, Salat, Käse, Guacamole, Nachos — alles sehr lecker.
Bei unserem letzten Besuch (wir waren mit Freunden da) war es allerdings etwas unangenehm, dass bei dem Naked Burrito meiner Freundin konsequent weniger drauf kam, als auf meinen. Auf Nachfrage erklärte der junge Mann, dass die Kollegin noch nicht so lange da wäre und deswegen mehr drauf mache als er. Seine Mengen hingegen wären Standard. Tja, wenn man am Ende das Gleiche zahlt, kommt es einem trotzdem nicht ganz fair vor. Hier hätte es ein Schlag mehr oder eine Zutat aufs Haus sicher rausgerissen. Schade, mit den Freunden kommen wir wohl nicht wieder. (Zumal es sich auch wirklich nicht gehört eine Kollegin vor Kunden so reinzureißen.)

Well to say I have been craving Mexican food since coming to Germany is an understatement. I mean how people over here have never had a taco, or burrito blows my mind and on top of that when they think of Mexican food they think of Taco Bell. This really grinds my gears!
So having heard about this place made me interested and on top of that I saw on Unilocal I get a 10% discount which is awesome. But when I got there the deal I got was even better. For students there is a deal where you get a Burrito and drink for 6.95. That’s incredible if you ask me.
The Burrito itself definitely satisfied my craving for sure. It was really tasty and everything I was hoping for. A good comparison of this place that I can think of is a Chipotle or Qdoba. I would put this place right up next to them. Great food, great environment and all at a great price is all the things I look for in a restaurant.

Tacco tacco? 10 Dollar!
So oder so ähnlich läuft es bei Bay Area. Man bestellt sich Tacco Burrito und stellt sich diese (n) dann zusammen.
Das Essen schmeckt jedes mal und die Preise sind nicht niedrig aber durchaus fair — besonders als Schüler oder Studi.
Die Auswahl ist genau richtig, hier konzentriert man sich weitestgehend auf sein Kernprodukt.
Die Angestellten sind immer net und das Ambiente ist cool.
Bay area gehört zu den Laden in die ich ausstädtischen Besuch häufig bringe, da man sowas in kleineren Städten nur in Enchiladas etc bekommt.

It reminds me of Chipotle in the USA but without the corporate feel. Good food and I highly recommend the Inferno salsa if you like it hot! I was pleasantly surprised how spicy it was since most food here in Deutschland is fairly mild. I live in San Diego so we know burritos pretty well. These guys are good.

Wer Burritos mag, wird den Laden lieben. Das Essen ist echt lecker, die Portionen sind sehr ordentlich das Personal ist recht freundlich. Die Preise sind ok. Zur Mittagszeit sind die Wartezeiten an sich sehr erträglich und man findet eigentlich immer einen Platz.

Sehr leckere Burritos und viel Auswahl um sich seinen Wunsch-​Burrito zusammen zu stellen. Leider sind bestimmte Zutaten öfter nicht vorhanden, so dass man entweder warten muss oder sich etwas anderes aussuchen muss. Für meinen Geschmack auch etwas überteuert. Ich finde ein normaler Burrito sollte nicht mehr als 5 € kosten. Trotzdem super das wir so einen Laden in Köln haben!

So, ich bin hier mit großen Erwartungen hingegangen und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht.
Der von mir zusammengestellter Burrito war sehr lecker. Jedoch kommt er an meinen Lieblingsburger nicht heran, so dass ich nur vier Sterne vergebe.

Viel von dem Laden gehört aber eher enttäuscht. Die Verkäuferin war richtig unmotiviert. Die Einrichtung ok wie ein Standardimbiss halt. Das Essen sehr lasch vom Geschmack und nicht mal richtig warm. Der Preis 20 € für 2 Burritos und 2 Fritz Cola etwas überteuert. Aber vielleicht hatte ich auch nur né schlechte Verkäuferin erwischt.

Super Burrito Laden in der Verlängerung vom Rudolfplatz. Man kann einen Burrito à la carte wählen oder sich selbst zusammenstellen mit durchweg frischen Zutaten. Preis-​Leistungs-​Verhältnis ist super, vorallem mit Studentenrabatt.

OH MY GOD, FINALLY. I’m from SoCal where you can find a delicious burrito/​taco place litterally every street corner. This place is setup like a chipotle — you choose each topping at a time. And it’s just… like home. You can choose to skip the tortilla bread and get a bowl with: meat (chicken, beef, pork), fresh veggies, guacamole… etc. For a burrito, you are probabaly going to pay between 5 Euros to 9 Euros. That said, you’ll be skipping dinner, so it’s a fair price.
Now all I need to make me feel like I’m totally home is some sunshine.

The food was adequate. Really inauthentic. Heavy of ordinary. No zip.

Hm, hatte mich gefreut als ich das erste mal von gehört hab, aber war dann doch eher enttäuscht… der Laden ist lieblos eingerichtet. Die Zutaten scheinen von geringer Qualität und dafür zahlt man dann doch zu viel. Mexikanisches Feeling (auch wenn es hier natürlich die amerikanische Variante darstellen soll…) kommt schon gar nicht auf: weder Soßen, Zutaten noch Ambiente sind sonderlich authentisch. Muss ich nicht nochmal hin.

Nicht ganz günstig, aber dafür sehr lecker! Vom Konzept her ähnlich wie Subway, es gibt eine ganze Reihe an Zutaten zur Auswahl, alles machte einen frischen Eindruck. Das Personal war nett und geduldig, wenn auch nicht besonders schnell beim Abräumen der Tische.

I had their special marinated barbacoa burrito. The meat was really good. All the ingredients tasted fresh — especially guacamole and pico de gallo. Reminded me of some good burritos I had in San Francisco. The place is casual and ordering is simple — you choose your ingredients — like chipotle ;) the burrito is big so definitely happy to pay about 7 € for it. If I hadn’t had a huge hunger at that time I would have asked my friends if they wanted to share it.

Der bereits erwähnte Studentenrabatt ist natürlich klasse…
Man ist allerdings etwas überfordert, wenn man hereinkommt und die Speisekarte über der Theke liest, aber die zwei Jungs dahinter waren sehr nett und hilfsbereit und eigentlich ist es gar nicht so schwer, weil man quasi nur ja und nein zu jeder Zutat sagen muss.
War dann auch total lecker und ich werde den Laden auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen und wiederkommen!

Die BABC ist ein (und meines Wissens nach auch der einzige) Burrito-​Laden in Köln. Hier kann man sich seine Burritos selber zusammenstellen wie man es zum Beispiel aus dem Subway kennt.
Das Resultat ist oft ein recht leckerer Burrito, der leider gen Ende des Burritos gerne seine Konsistenz verliert und sich über worüber man auch immer gerne isst verteilt — oft die entsprechende Alufolie.
Leider ist der Preis etwas gehobener — aber auch grob in der selben Klasse wie große Sandwiches bei Subway, z.B.

Ganz nett, frische Zutaten und schneller Service.
Burritos bzw. die Zutaten könnten besser gewürzt sein, irgendwie schmeckte mir das alles zu lasch.
Getränke gnadenlos überteuert.

Meh. Not remotely spicy enough. Wet mess. Biggest disappointment is that the burritos aren’t finished in a sandwich press.

Ich war schon mehrfach dort und was das Essen angeht, war ich immer zufrieden. bloß scheint es mit der Zeit weniger Motivation zu geben.
Was für mich ein absolutes NoGo ist, ist der Kunden-​Santitärbereich.
Dass man nach einem Burrito an Händewaschen denkt oder auch ganz einfach Pipi machen muss, haben die Macher nicht bedacht.
Dass dort nicht gereinigt wird, erkennt man an den Spinnenweben. Dass es auch niemanden interessiert merkt man an wiederholt fehlenden Papierhandtüchern und Seife. Es ist ekelhaft. Sorry, ist aber so.

Being from Denver, home of Chipotle, this place didn’t stack up. The ingredients aren’t as fresh as they are in the states, but that doesn’t mean it was bad. By far best burrito I’ve had in Europe. It’s not terribly expensive and students get a free drink. It’s pretty good. Would recommend for lunch.

I was a regular at Chipotle in the States, and this place has a very similar layout with the ingredients. We had Barbacoa and Chicken naked bowl and although it was good, the food was not as flavorful. This may be my fast-​food Tex Mex go to place in Köln.

Overall, a great value, delicious, and as close as possible to an authentic burrito! Would make it amazing with minor touches like jalapeño, cilantro, and more heat.

Heute haben wir unseren Groupon Gutschein hier eingelöst.
Die Grundidee, d.h. das Konzept dieses Lokals könnte man als «mexikanisches Subway» bezeichnen.
Man wählt zwischen dem «Drumherum» und den Zutaten sowie Saucen direkt an der Theke aus.
Das Ergebnis finde ich nur mittelprächtig.
Der Burrito hat die Anmutung eines kräftigen Oberarms. Was für den Hunger gut ist, für die Essbarkeit weniger.
Das 4 Stunden gegarte Fleisch ist ok, wenn auch viel zu wenig gewürzt. Ausserdem sieht 4 Stunden gegartes Fleisch nicht lecker aus. (auch wenn es zart ist)
Insgesamt war das Essen nicht schlecht. Aber vom Geschmack zu wenig mexikanisch, zu Fast Food like und zu wenig originell. Ich warte immer noch auf Taco Bell hier in Deutschland.

I visited this place last night for dinner. I lived in San Diego, California, which is basically Mexico, for many years, so it’s tough to find comparable quality when abroad, especially in Europe. The style is similar to a Chipotle restaurant concept. The burrito I had, I would label as «OK», nothing that would have you leaving the restaurant saying, «I can’t wait to come here again…» The problems I see is that the meat they use has been sitting in the containers for many hours, and becomes dry and tough. That’s maybe due to a low turnover of customers during the evening. Also, they are not very generous with the ingredients inside. I was still a little bit hungry after finishing my burrito. I will give it another try for lunch in the next few weeks…

Finally checked out this American-​owned place after a few Unilocalers’ recommendations, and YES, I finally found a decent Mexican place in Cologne! This restaurant is straight up a very similar version of America’s Chipotle: almost identical menu, similar ingredients, same format, with the same menu options, including the naked burrito. Like Chipotle, they advertise fresh, organic ingredients. Hubby had the tacos and I had the carnitas burrito. The verdict: flavorful, FRESH, and quality! A far cry from the soggy, oily, heavy, grease-​laden dishes at other burrito places.
Would be great to see hard tacos and taco salad or loaded nachos in the future. And although this restaurant is like Chipotle in so many ways, it didn’t feel like a cheap knock-​off; rather, the similarities is what made it more appealing to me personally. I felt a wave of nostalgia and comfort and coziness coming here and it reminded me of home, which I obviously can’t feel in other restaurants here in Germany (even McD’s seems so foreign here). It helps that I could speak to the owner in English. Will be coming here frequently. :)

My wife and I are from the DC area and we are finally thrilled to find a delicious, fast, fresh and fair priced burrito & mexican salad restaurant in Köln. We got into conversation with the owner John — he’s really customer friendly and has done a great job in providing the «Chipotle format» dining experience in Germany. A bit of a life saver as we love this food and haven’t found anything else like it in Köln !!
Food quality and delivery is top class — my one tip to draw more customers in would be to use the advertising chalkboard to emphasize great prices (combo deals etc), fresh food and friendly ‘conversational’ service experience
We almost walked past the store as the street chalkboard had a neat picture of a mexican guy on it but really clear what it was advertising.

I used to think I had to travel all the way to London every time I wanted to get the kind of burrito I fell in love with in southern California but that’s no longer the case. The Bay Area Burrito Co. is a fantastic little gem right in the middle of a fun downtown Koln. I will be returning again very soon. My only recommendation would be to make your chips in house rather than the generic ones you include with your guacamole (which, by the way, was pretty darn good but mix in cilantro for a little more zing haha).
All in all it was a great dining experience that didn’t break the bank.

Ach was habe ich mich gefreut. Da will man kurz am Rudolfplatz was essen, bevors zum Gentleman Konzert geht. Aber Mäkkes? Nein! KFC? Nein! Sub? Née, lieber was warmes Und schnell solls gehen
Burritos sind lecker und man kann sie sich nach belieben zusammenstellen. Wenn der Preis nicht so happig wäre (bin kein Student :)), würde ich dort immer essen, wenns mal schnell gehen muss. Personal war auch sehr nett. Für alle die mal eine Alternative zum klassischen Fast-​Food suchen!

The place is really nice and clean.
I had the roasted pork Burrito, it just saw better than the steak.
They’re Big enough and the taste is good, at least for the German Tex-​Mex, i can’t complain.
They fill it with all sorts of things.
The Salsa tasted really good, and was not that hot, so i was happy with it.
The tortilla chips were not good, i’ve had better, even from Supermarket, the Guacamole had a bit too much lemon, and was a bit dark, also it was already a bit old, but tasted well not really good, but it wasn’t bad either. I mean compared to real mexican Guacamole.
I wished they’d put the cheese right away with the beef, so it’ll melt at least a bit, the taste of the beans was really good, and the sour cream too.
It seems like they really use quality ingredients.
The Staff is really nice.
The Chipotle/​Subway model they have is also quite helpful, where you are asked what do you want in your burrito.
I liked it and i’m definitely coming back.

Update: 13.04.13 — the black beans were MUCH improved, the guacamole was even better, and the salsa finally packed a *bit* of heat. Still the same run-​of-​the-​mill chips, but I’ve decided to let that slide for now. Enjoy!

I’m hoping to upgrade this to a 4-​star on my next visit.
As a displaced (by choice) TexaCali expat, it’s been hard to satisfy my cravings for ‘real’ Tex/​Cal-​Mex food outside my own kitchen. Please don’t get me started on what passes for Mexican food in NRW. And those rare weekend trips to London where I could eat every meal at Wahaca, Chilango or Chipotle — or to Paris to do the same at Chipotle or Candelaria — or to Berlin to chow down at Dolores — were few and far between… not to mention expensive.
Needless to say, I was 1) shocked, 2) excited to see a review on Unilocal!for a burrito joint in Köln. So. A Texan, a Californian, and a Canadian walked into Bay Area Burrito…
The Californian ordered a veggie burrito, the Canadian a chicken burrito, and I (the Texan) had a steak burrito. Of course.
Minuses: 1) the black beans were a little undercooked and hard, but still very edible, 2) the pinto beans were underspiced, but well-​cooked, 3) on the veggie burrito, the amount of beans given were skimpy, 4) the tortilla chips tasted like the ones you can buy at any grocery store in Germany, 5) ‘hot’ salsa should make my eyes water… but bear in mind that my standards are almost impossibly high when it comes to Tex-​Mex. :-)
Pluses: 1) A BURRITO PLACE IN KÖLN!!!, 2) the homemade guacamole was very good, 3) overall, we were happy with our food order, 4) the place was clean and had a good atmosphere, 5) the owner and his wife (?) were friendly and obviously passionate about bringing ‘real’ burritos to Germany, 6) prices were reasonable.
I’ll be looking forward to my next visit (soon!) as the owners continue to look for the most ‘authentic’ produce, chips, and spices that Germany can provide.
