Tacheles

One of the people who recommended a visit to this art house referred to it as «the Sistene Chapel of Graffiti.» This seems like a bit of an exaggeration, as I’d call Five Pointz is a more impressive display of sheer spray-​paint skill. However, to say the least, Tacheles is an incredibly fascinating space… albeit, with slight undertones of dread and a nice «come explore and just hope you don’t get murdered vibe.”*
During the day, it seems to be part art gallery, part homeless shelter, and part living art itself. There are many floors and rooms, and no signage to speak of. We stumbled on some sculpture and paintings of extremely varied quality, and one hallway with hanging wires dangling dangerously and lit patchouli incense sticking out of the walls turned out to be an unstaffed gift shop of sorts. At one point, we climbed some stairs and ended up at a dead end (I assume some floors are open at different hours). There were a few people wandering in and out in a daze, just like us, and then several folks intently working on projects like moving what appeared to be trash back and forth. And of course everything, I mean everything, was covered in graffiti.
Around the corner, we walked past some people selling jewelry (I’m assuming, really; there was a jewelry stand and people were loitering nearby) into a building that I have to assume is related due to similar vibe, décor, and chaos. I climbed the stairs to the top following the poetry on each step, and about halfway, I passed a man sitting in a hammock drinking beer who didn’t return my nod of greeting. After we passed him, he told some girls coming up behind us that the upstairs was closed. I fully expected that he decided to shut the staircase down for our ritual execution, but somehow we made it out just fine.
Tacheles defies description or categorization of any kind, but whatever it may be, it’s worth a visit. If you enjoy the free, fascinating, utterly unguided tour you give yourself, drop some change in the bucket at the entrance and sign the petition to keep this place open. You’ll join what looks like hundreds of thousands of other signatures in binders and bundles that were part of the display, and you’ll help keep this place on the edge of being demolished, which is where it seems to reside, permanently.

Go! Go Now! Seriously, this place is under constant threat of closing down so enjoy it while you can. I love how you can wander in on a quiet Tuesday night and there is band practice, markets, and artists sculpting. It is quintessential Berlin.

I LOVED Tacheles. I came here with my friends in Berlin to look at the art as part of the «study abroad» tour my best friend was on. From the graffiti to the junkyard to the broken stained glass windows… I was in love. Also, the various art galleries were great too. I went in 2008 went Pornografica was showing which I found to be fantastic and raw. The bar at Tacheles was great too. After looking at the art, we went downstairs and grabbed a few beers and my friends played a few rounds of table tennis while I sat there and watched and enjoyed the music. After getting a little tipsy, I went to a local vendor and had possibly the best garlic fries I’ve ever had. I took them back to Tacheles — no problem. I loved Tacheles and when I go back to Berlin, I’m coming back.

I wish some of the artists did not get painted over so it was clearer to see the messages, but that’s very wishful thinking.

Si vous passez par Berlin, et que vous aimez tout ce qui fait l’art alternatif allemand, il vous faut absolument passer par ce squat d’artistes mythique du quartier Mitte !
Je n’étais pas emballée au début, mais j’ai finalement passé plus de 2 heures entre les peintures, les tableaux, les dessins, les posters, de la bonne musique etc.
Vraiment génial !
A faire absolument si vous passez par Berlin !

An incredible artspace and more in Berlin. There is a lot of in-​fighting happening here with the government and capitalists buying out the artists and the space to develop it into (most likely) horrific hipster condos. I hope it never goes away.

Found out too late that this place doubles as a dance club? Crazy.
This is something not to miss if you are in Berlin. I felt like I was truly having a Berlin-​experience while walking through this place. Is that cheesy? Whatever. It’s cool, the artists are actually really talented and I walked out with a couple prints for myself.
This should be at the top of your list whether you’ve lived in Berlin all your life or are just visiting for the first time.

I am not exaggerating a bit, when i say… if you came to Berlin, and did not visit Tacheles, then you have lost around 30% of your visit value.
The amount of Art, coolness and great atmosphere found in this bar, is not to be compared with anything else in the world.
The backyard section is a cool place to hang out with friends, have a beer and enjoy the latest crazy berliner art, in a half or fully drunk state… it is a unique experience, trust me.
the only thing which needs to be controlled lately, is the number of «pub crawls» taking place here, which if pushed too far, can make the place loose it uniqueness and coolness.

I visited Berlin a couple of years ago, and my visit to Tacheles is one of the most memorable parts of my trip. I would go so far as to say that this is THE coolest bar I have ever been to in my life, and believe me, I’ve been to my fair share.
First of all, this place is located in a seedy old warehouse building, and as you enter you find yourself in a concrete stairwell that is absolutely COVERED with graffiti. Going through the various levels, you’ll find yourself in artist studios where you can peruse and purchase a myriad of artistic pieces. I bought a pair of funky earrings here that I still get compliments on all the time. The art that envelops this place is stunning and ever-​evolving; it’s a unique environment that I don’t think can be matched elsewhere.
Finally, at the top there is a bar/​lounge area with old couches and huge windows that look over the city. It really is an interesting and beautiful view, looking out over the beach bar in the courtyard with the city in the background.
This place really just screams «Berlin.» I would love to go back to Berlin someday soon, and I know this will be one of the first places I visit after I get off the plane.

I quote «this is the type of club you pull on your jeans and t-​shirt, buy dirt cheap beer at half a euro, and hope that the person you went home with from this club is over the age of 18.»

Graffiti, art or eyesore?
You be the judge, however, if in the debate of graffiti, you find yourself leaning towards art, then a visit to Tacheles is a must. I never thought of myself to be a modern art lover before Berlin, but after countless Madonna and Childs, and quoting one of my fellow solo traveler, «if i ever see another madonna and child, i may just throw up» — Berlin was a welcoming change, with art and expression at just about every corner.
Tacheles was no exception. Situated in an old, abandoned warehouse, the space looks rather seedy, but the galleries and exhibits inside are creative and just about every inch of the walls are covered with street art. Enjoy the galleries and just take in the wonderful atmosphere. Pose while holding up a sign showing your support for tacheles and act on that impulse by going downstairs and enjoying a beer at the «beach» bar and enjoy people watching.

I have to preface this review by saying that I was at Tacheles for one day, a rainy day, in mid September. Many of the studios were closed, but the open ones, I assume, could or could not have been a good example of the general tone of the rest of the studios.
Everyone was friendly enough, their work was not earth shattering ingenuity, but I have much respect for the fellow creative doing their thing, and opening their doors to the public to judge. It’s a bold move.
The history of this place is quite amazing, and I imagine there are a lot of ghosts floating around at Tacheles because of it.
The hallways smell of urine, and every hard surface is sticky or caked with funk. They make no claims of sanitary conditions.
Overall, the place is eye candy, some have a message, some do not, and the artists are transient so you’ll always see something new and different.
I hear it’s in it’s last days and has lost its collective message. Divided we fall, I suppose. So enjoy it while you can, it’s certainly a site to see.

En pleine période de Cough Surfing fiever, je me suis pris un coup de speed pour aller visiter Berlin by myself. J’ai été accueilli chez un hongrois vivant à Kreuzberg, ultra cool, qui m’a hébergé pendant 4 jours… avec une fille de Seattle de passage sur son canap’ également…
Sachant que je voulais filmer & interviewer des gens dans les quartiers de Berlin, Amanda (l’américaine graphiste en plein tour du monde) me conseille de faire un détour par le Tacheles, un vieux Squat en plein Mitte, dans le centre de la ville.
J’y passé donc (sans conviction) en fin de journée…et là, coup de coeur foudroyant… Pied dans le sable, chaises dans les arbres, camionnettes à bière posée à chaque coins, sardine /​barbec /​concert et un immeuble de 4 étages à visiter…
+ une ITV très cool, avec Olivier, un français qui a toujours vécu dans ce squat d’artistes (l’intelligent!) et qui n’a gardé de sa naissance que la francophonie dans le sang ;)

What is this fascination these days with dive bars? It’s a craze that’s sweeping the entire planet! Dive bars are cool in theory, but in actuality they are rather depressing. I’ve yet to step foot in a bonafide «dive bar» in Europe. I say, be glad you don’t have them!
Kunsthaus Tacheles reminds me of the kind of giant loft building you’d find in DUMBO, Brooklyn about 15 years ago when it was an industrial wasteland-​yet full of artists-​and a fun place to dream about living for free (Gone are those days. I mean, Jay Zee lives in a luxury high rise on Jay Street!)
So, yeah, I dig the vibe here, from the staircase filled with graffiti, to the artists’ floors featuring everything from tattoos to sculpture… to the cinema and bars on the upper floors. It’s really an art student’s dream and I think appeals especially to the young backpack set. I was there in October and the crowd was a bit young for me, but no matter, I had a really great time and that view from the top bar is incredible. I’d say it’s a must see for anyone going to Berlin for the first time. Read up on the history first. It’ll make the visit even more interesting.

Ein Berliner Wunder, das bald verschwinden wird. Dass es nicht unter Denkmalschutz steht, dass man es ohne großes Geschrei bloß verkaufen und wegwerfen will, ist für mich fast undenkbar. Ich habe tatsächlich fast alle Gäste, die bei mir übernachtet haben, hier hingeschickt — das kann ich über keinen anderen Ort in Berlin sagen — auch nicht über den Reichstag. Und ich habe die alle hier hergeschickt weil das Tacheles ein kultureller Schatz ist, der alle großen kulturellen Entwicklungen seit der Wende wiederspiegelt. Klar, es gibt Leute die sich ein sauberes, reiches Berlin wünschen — aber wenn dieses Berlin zustande kommt dann haue ich sofort ab. Der Laden ist toll, ich habe viele interessante Filme hier angeschaut und mehrere Gäste von mir haben Berlin erst nach einem Besuch hier richtig verstanden. Dass sie zumachen müssen finde ich echt eine Schande.

Ach ja, das Tacheles. Als ich Mitte der 90er aus dem Kino im Tacheles (hieß damals noch nicht High End 54) kam, weil ich bei dem dialoglastigen, französischen Kunstfilm aufgrund eines blöden Platzes die Untertitel nicht lesen konnte, begegnete mir zwischen drittem und vierten Stock ein ein etwas fünfzig Jahre altes Pärchen im hellen Trenchcoat mit unverkennbarem Ruhrpottdialekt. Die Dauergewellte mit Reiseführer in der Hand zu ihrem Mann: «Vatti, in den fünften müssen wir aber auch noch» War das noch lustig kurz nach Maueröffnung, als drei Stockwerke unterhalb des Tacheles Kneipen — regelrechte Themenparks, bevor das erfunden worden ist –waren, die von wirklich skurillen Gestalten bevölkert wurden.
Das Tacheles hat sich eigentlich längst überlebt. Die Projekte — wenn man sich das mal über die letzten 15 Jahre betrachtet — immer dasselbe. So schön vergammelt und abgeranzt und irgendwie frei und selbstbestimmt — so stellt sich das der junge Neuberliner aus Freiburg, Münster oder Osnabrück von heute vor und ist ganz wuschig, wenn er da ein bisschen mitmachen darf — hui!
Immerhin ein touristischer Anziehungspunkt und damit wertvoll — von irgendwas muss die Stadt ja leben. Und da dieses politisch, subversive Lebendevent auch in jedem Reiseführer aus Sri Lanka steht, findet es auch die entsprechende Beachtung.

Hin. So lange es noch geht.
Ende Juli 2010 wird das Tacheless nach ewig langem Kampf besiegt sein.

Es wurde als alternativer und primär unkommerzieller Ort der Kunst überholt vom Hype seiner Umgebung.
Obwohl schon oft tot gesagt, scheint das Damoklesschwert sich nun über das Kunsthaus zu senken.
Hoffen auf ein Wunder? Dies hieße in diesem Falle, mittels Erbpacht das Grundstück einer öffentlichen Stiftung zu überführen.
Schön wär’s…
Es ist fünf vor zwölf.

Allen Gerüchten nach soll bald Schluss sein mit der letzten Bastion bohemistischen Kunstwerkens in Berlin. Die Investoren stehen seit Jahren Schlange, um sich das lukrative Grundstück zwischen Friedrichstraße und Oranienburger Straße einzuverleiben. Jahrzehnte lang hat das Haus nun gegen Hotel-​, Büro– und Restaurant-​Konzepte standgehalten.
Das Kunsthaus Tacheles bietet sowohl Raum für Werkstätten, als auch für Kino, Theater und Partys. Nur eines ist es schon lange nicht mehr: politisch orientiert. Falls es nicht gelingen sollte, das Tacheles in eine private Stiftung zu überführen, sind die Pächter selbst dran Schuld. Die denkmalgeschützte Ruine des ehemaligen Kaufhauses wurde bereits 1990 besetzt und wird seitdem geduldet. Nun zerfleischen sich die Pächter gegenseitig. Wie das eben so ist im gelebten Kommunismus.

Meinen Vorrednern kann ich nur beipflichten, das Tacheles ist kultverdächtig und in Berlin nicht mehr wegzudenken. Eine wirkliche Erscheinung das leicht baufällig wirkende Gebäude direkt auf der Ecke Friedrichstraße /​Oranienburger Tor. Kann man nicht übersehen in der sonst so stark modernisierten Umgebung. Immer wieder finden sich interessante Projekte und künstlerische Darbietungen in und hinter dem Tacheles. Vor allem auch an der Wand des gegenüberliegenden Gebäudes.
Einst wirkte das Tacheles etwas eingenommen von Drogendealern, doch mittlerweile ist hiervon keine Spur mehr zu sehen. Momentan gibt es eine kleine Pflanzenplantage auf dem Hinterhof und eine kleine Bar. Die Metallskulpturen von Arda und ein alter bunt verzierter, ich glaube, VW-​Bus dürfen natürlich auch nicht unerwähnt bleiben. In der Galerie von Arda liegen übrigens in allen möglichen Sprachen Listen zum Sammeln von Unterschriften für den Erhalt des Tacheles aus.
Was ich besonders an dem Tacheles liebe, ist ein Gang durch das Gebäude. Weiter oben im Tacheles kann man von einer Art Balkon auf den HInterhof schauen und man sammelt bei seinem Rundgang immer wieder neue Eindrücke. Da das Tacheles vollgestopft ist mit Künstlern, die ja nicht gerade als Sesselpupser bekannt sind, kann man sich auch ganz plötzlich mal auf einer Party wiederfinden.

Das Tacheles ist seit 1990 einer der wichtigsten Orte in Berlins Mitte, an dem für Kunst und Kultur gekämpft wird. Eigentlich sollte das Gebäude 1990 abgerissen werden. Doch dann stellte man das mehr als 100 Jahre alte Haus unter Denkmalschutz. Es entstanden etliche Ateliers und Ausstellungsräume, im Erdgeschoss das berühmte Café Zapata und das HIgh End 54 Kino im 2. Stock des Gebäudes. Ich kann nicht sagen, dass ich jede dort gesehene Ausstellung super fand. Aber dass unterschiedlichsten Künstlern die Möglichkeit geboten wird, ihre Werke dort zu zeigen, finde ich super und auch sehr wichtig. Gerade im durchgestylten und durchorganisierten Mitte ist es doch eine angenehme Abwechslung, wenn ein Ausstellungsort nicht total clean und rein ist, sondern ehrlich und abgefuckt. Das Tacheles ist gerade im Sommer, wenn man im Innenhof sitzen und nen Bier/​Cocktail/​Longdrink schlürfen kann, immer einen Besuch wert!

Das Kunsthaus Tacheles beherbergt das High End Kino 54 und das Café Zapata.
Wer Berlin, wie es direkt nach der Wende war, mal so richtig in sich aufnehmen möchte, der ist im Tacheles genau richtig.
Der stehengebliebene Rest des jüdischen Kaufhauses «Tacheles» wurde am 13. Februar 1990 von der Künstlerinitiative Tacheles besetzt und ist durch seine trashige Bemalung & Beklebung zu einer im Reiseführer beschriebenen Touristenattraktion geworden.
Die Bezeichnung «Tacheles reden» (von hebr. taklî = Ziel, Zweck; jiddische Bezeichnung für Klartext) bedeutet: Direkt die unverblümte Wahrheit sagen.
Das passt sehr gut zum heutigen Erscheinungsbild des Tacheles, denn hier hatten schon viele Künstler die Möglichkeit ihr persönliches «Tacheles reden» zum Ausdruck zu bringen.
Das Tacheles beherbergt das Café Zapata im Erdgeschoss Kino High End 54 im 3. Stock links und darüber befindet sich noch eine Bar ohne Namen.
Wenn man sich den Urin Geruch weg denkt, der leider dadurch entsteht, weil das Tacheles ein offenes Gebäude ist und man sich Tag und Nacht darin bewegen kann, wird das Treppenhaus schon mal als Toilette oder/​und als Schlafplatz für kalte Nächte genutzt.
Aber das gehört zum wahren Leben dazu und deswegen ist Tacheles ein Kunstgenuss pur.
Mir persönlich gefällt am Besten das High End Kino 54, da werden die Filme noch über Filmrollen gespult und nicht digital.
Und wenn man Glück hat, ist man auch noch der einzigste Besucher in einen der 2 Kinosäle.
Das liegt nicht daran, weil das Kinoprogramm so schlecht ist, sondern weil viele das Kino schlicht und ergreifend nicht finden.
Die Kinokarten gibt es noch am Tresen persönlich vom Bar-​Personal.
In den Kinoräumlichkeiten kann man es sich dann, auf den roten Kunstledersofas gemütlich machen, wenn es nicht voll ist.
Nach der Vorstellung sollte man sich unbedingt noch die Galerien zu Gemüt führen, die sich in den oberen Stockwerken befinden.
Danach sollte man ins Café Zapata ins Erdgeschoss stürzen, umdort einen letzten oder den ersten Trink zu sich zu nehmen und sich dabei der Live– Musik hin zu geben.
Im Sommer kuscheln alle auf dem Tacheles Hof, der sich über die Jahre schon zu einer Kunst Nachtflohmarkt entwickelt hat.
Das einzige Manko ist, das einem schnell die Drogenmachenschaften ins Auge fallen und durch den Konsum vor ort einen schon manchmal der ein oder andere Geruch in der Nase sticht. Aber auch das gehört zum Leben dazu und wo findet man noch ein Gebäude in Berlin, das so offen und ehrlich miteinander existiert.

Das Tacheles kämpft zurzeit ums Überleben. So wie fast überall in Berlin soll das alternative Künstlerprojekt dem Gentrifizierungsprozess zum Opfer fallen und in ein schickes Hotel/​Apartmenthaus umgewandelt werden. Die Betreiber versuchen gerade durch die Gründung einer Stiftung, das Grundstück zu kaufen, um das Haus zu retten. Falls dies nicht gelingt, droht dem ganzen das endgültige Aus, was in meinen Augen ein riesiger Verlust für den ganzen Kiez und Bezirk Mitte wäre.
In der sonst so überaus schicken Oranienburgerstraße ist das Künstlerhaus Tacheles mit seiner bunten abgerissenen Fassade nämlich ein Zufluchtsort vom Hype der Gegend und zeigt wie urig schön Berlin einst auch in Mitte zu sein pflegte.
Die Ausstellungen sind gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber das tut nichts zur Sache. Ich liebe das Zapata, eins der zwei locations im Erdgeschoss des Hauses. Dort trifft man fast immer auf wirklich gute Live-​Musik. Wer auf Latainamerikanische Klänge oder Afro-​Beats steht, keine Angst vor Nähe– (meist ist es immer knackend voll-​also jedenfalls am Wochenende) und Lust auf ein alternativ-​bunt-​gemischtes Publikum hat, der sollte hier auf alle Fälle mal reinschauen. Im Hof unten stehen im Sommer zahlreiche Sitzgelegenheiten (von Baumstämmen über alte Autos und Strandkörbe) um sich bei einem Bier mit Freunden zu unterhalten und die Nacht zu genießen. Ich glaube seit letztem Jahr muss man Eintritt bezahlen, wenn man in den Hof will, davor war es kostenlos. Was man den Betreibern angesichts der fast ausweglosen Situation aber wohl nicht übel nehmen kann!

Das legendäre Tacheles!
Es sollte schon ettliche Male geschlossen und geräumt werden, doch es gibt es noch immer!
Ein ehemals jüdisches Kaufhaus, dessen rechter Flügel den zweiten Weltkrieg überstanden hat und nun die hauseigene Kunst auf verschiedenen Etagen zum Verkauf anbietet.
Außerdem ist im Erdgeschoss das Café Zapata, mit den hausgeschweissten Interiör inklusive eines feuerspeiendem Drachen. Das ganze Haus ist offen zum Erkunden und bietet noch dazu einen großen…nennen wir es Garten, in dem man entspannt bei einem Bier, Radler, Kaffee und was es noch so zum Schnabulieren zu kaufen gibt, sitzen und entspannen kann.
