Silo Coffee

Wonderful breakfast cafe. Silo is by now a brunch and coffee institution in Berlin and there is clear reason why it is so popular and famous.

Super Frühstück. Leider schmeckt das Essen jedes Mal etwas anders. Im Großen und Ganzen aber sehr gelungen und absolut hip.

Einmal waren wir zum Frühstück im Silo. International. Englische Kommunikation.
Essen international amerikanisch würde ich sagen aber auch qualitativ nicht so hot.
Geschmacklich hat es mich enttäuscht.
Ich hatte durch die ganzen Beiträge und Berichte mehr erwartet.

There is hope for flat white lovers in Berlin, more and more places just get it perfectly right and Silo is on of them. The service is not the quickest, but when you get your coffee wow.
I really wanted to give 5* to Silo, because I also liked the style and the ambiance but the food was slightly over complicated for me. They made great scrambled eggs and then they topped it off with some purple herbs, which tasted too earthy for my taste.
Th pancake and porridge was superb according to my dining companions, so by choosing those 5* can be reached. :)

The first time I visited Berlin I fell in love with the fact that it had a thriving third wave coffee culture. So each time I’ve visited since I’ve tried to check out a new café. I’ve seen Silo Coffee in a handful of blogs and ‘best coffee’ lists from local websites and since I have yet to explore the neighborhood of Friedrichshain I decided to come out here and spend a few hours working at the café. My first impression was positive as I liked the minimalist yet cozy space and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The menus are in English but that’s not surprising as the proprietors are Australian. Since I knew I’d be hanging out here for some time I picked one of the small tables at the back of the café after I ordered an iced latte and an avocado toast. The coffee was terrific and I loved that they served their iced latte in glasses that’s fit for old fashioned cocktails. And with the single large ice cube it looks almost like a cocktail too. But more than that I loved the food! I’ve had a lot of avocado toast as its quite popular in brunch menus in NYC right now but I do believe theirs is the best one I’ve had so far! The mashed avocado is topped with poached egg and bacon and drizzled with this delicious green sauce and dusted with sumac. This results in this bright, citrusy flavor that combines with the smokiness of the bacon and the egg just rounds off the dish perfectly. I’m definitely making my avocado toasts at home in this way. If I lived in Berlin this place would be one of my favorite spots. I will definitely go back again.

The avocado on bread has turned in to this crunchy crostini-​type bread. Disappointed that it changed as the old bread was much more enjoyable! Friendly staff nonetheless :)

Apart from the excruciatingly slow and disinterested service, this is a great place for coffee and breakfasts. Poached eggs and bacon on sourghdough was worth the 45minute wait, and the coffee is amongst the best in Berlin (even if we did have to remind them twice that we were still waiting, an hour after ordering!)

Great coffee. Worst hours. Walked by to get coffee at 4:40pm (20min before they close). Was told I can’t get coffee… Thanks for being open so you can tell me you can’t sell me what your supposed to sell…

Highly impressed with this place — despite leaning towards the Hipster side of things the staff were very friendly (and all spoke better english than me) and the place seems really well run and efficient.
It was very busy when I visited so I ended up eating my food perched on a bench rather than st one if the tables but… it was totally worth it. Home made beans, chunky mashed guacamole, toasted sourdough, spinach, chorizo sausage, perfectly poached eggs and the best coffee I’ve ever had in Berlin. I’m a fan.

The interior Design is super nice and all the furniture is great quality. Good music, though the bass was at times so loud that you couldn’t hear the singers voice.
The food was very tasty but expensive for the portion size. Got the brioche and it was super tasty but I left hungry. Coffee was good.
The problem was that the people working there were completely indifferent to their customers. I’m getting really sick of going to restaurants run by expats who make good food but are too cool to treat their customers with respect and in a friendly manner. Didn’t get a smile the whole time.
We walked in and couldn’t tell how the seating worked — asked if a table was free and she said it was reserved, then left us standing there instead of giving us an alternative.
Waited 30 minutes after ordering for our coffee. And it came after the food!
Bathroom looked like it hadnt seen a mop in days, was a bit grossed out.
Get the service down people and you’ll get loyal customers!
Loved the food, wouldn’t come back as service was indifferent and they all seemed like they hated being there.
Oh yeah and I think it’s pretty bad to not even offer the menu translated in German — come on, really? Employing English speakers is fair enough but you can at least help your German customers out a bit with the menu. Wouldn’t cost that much to have someone translate it!

L’un des meilleurs petit déjeuners de ma vie ! Tous les plats que j’ai mangé à Silo avaient une saveur incroyable. Lorsque les plats arrivent, attendez-​vous à dire «wow !» pour la présentation, puis un encore plus gros «WOW !» une fois que vous y goûterez ! Chaque bouchée est un plaisir et rend immédiatement addict. Les plats prennent un peu de temps à arriver donc si vous êtes pressés, faites-​le savoir aux serveurs avant de vous installer. Le restaurant est tenu par des australiens très accueillants, et surtout très passionnés par ce qu’ils font. Un brunch à Silo est absolument obligatoire si vous passez à Berlin !

Inspiriert von the Barn in der Schönhauser Allee zeigt sich das Silo in Fhain. verkauft wird ausschließlich the Barn Cofee — gerade für malzige Kaffeeliebhaber ein wahrer Genuss (ich bevorzuge es etwas herber).
Interieur und Atmosphäre bekommen 5sterne
auch die Bedienung ist fix, leider ist die Küche sehr gemütlich aber alles frisch.
Negativ war, dass mein Rührei kalt geliefert wurde… dann aber natürlich sofort ausgetauscht wurde! anders als bei der Zubereitung ging das sehr fix.
es gibt auch einen Hahn zur Selbstbedienung mit Leitungswasser — das sollten sicherlich mehr Restaurants einführen — Daumen hoch!
an sich fand ich es sehr nett. leider für mich nicht geeignet. Safran im Rührei sowie sehr australisch angehauchtes breakfast Menü sind nicht meins.
der Rest war aber begeistert.

Accueil anglophone a Berlin, adresse trendy mais sans excès. Ce joli établissement est à recommander pour sa cuisine très savoureuse et originale. Nous avons savouré un brunch à 20 euros, cher pour Berlin… mais très justifié après y avoir goûté. Service attentionné sans être envahissant. Décor branché, seul petit bémol, la taille de notre table pour 4 était petite…

We had the best breakfast in Berlin here. Try the avocado on bread or the bercher müsli. Also good coffee here. Highly recommendable!

Kaffee und Frühstück enttäuschend. Ist ja okay, dass man englisch spricht, wie wäre es mit ein paar Worten deutsch? Auf Reklamation wurde vom Personal nicht eingegangen. Entschuldigung gab es nicht. Optisch sind der Laden und die Speisen super, nur leider bringt das nix, wenn der Kaffee nicht schmeckt, Frühstück und Personal enttäuschen.

If you ever wanna feel like having breakfast in Australia, Silo is the place to go! The food is absolutely delicious and the Flat White almost made me feel like sitting at the beach in Manly (minus the beach and the ocean…). Definitely one of the best breakfast places!

Silo is one of the few places in my neighborhood I go to almost daily. The owners and staff are extremely friendly and always happy to explain menu offerings or make recommendations.
It gets a bit crowded inside when the weather is cold but going there first thing in the morning for their delicious Avocado on Sourdough and a pour over is one of the only ways to get me out of bed on a gloomy day.
Silo don’t have a ton of vegan options but the options they serve are delicious! As I said above their Avocado on Sourdough is a must have. It comes with a tomato, onion and balsamic garnish and a lime wedge that makes each bite so good that when finish it, you’ll want to order another one. This menu item usually comes with goat’s cheese, I simply order it without. They also serve incredible fresh orange juice with a side shot of freshly pressed ginger!

Der Laden Stil sicher, dezent Retro schick mit Fahrrad an der Wand.
Sitz Gelegenheit angenehm aber wohl auf Dauer eher unbequem.
Personal war freundlich und das bestellte schnell parat.
Espresso hat leider geschmeckt wie Essig fast ungenießbar für mich, Bananenbrot wirkte kompakt aber lecker.
Fazit:Es ist Sonntag alle Cafés voll, es war né Ausnahme.

Ich liebe dieses café! Die Einrichtung, das Ambiente (ruhiger Kaffeehaus-​Flair). Kaffee ist einfach perfekt, die Cookies und brownies der Hit. Immer wieder gerne!

Sehr feundliches Personal und guter Kaffee. Das Ambiente leider etwas Steril und die Sitzmöglichkeiten wenig gemütlich.

Looking for good (i mean really good) coffee this is your place. Lovin the interior, reminds me of San francisco ‘s hip places. Great spot for some creative work on your MacBook ;-) nice staff.

Silo has the best coffee in Friedrichshain.
I care little for interiors or friendly staff, so ill leave that stuff uncommented.
What I want is an excellent cup of coffee. And that is what Silo supplies.
That is all.

Geile Kaffeemaschine, geile Mühle, aber leider niemand weit und breit, der Ahnung von ihrer Bedienung hat…
Sorry, aber der Kaffee war echt eine enttäuschende Plörre. Weder für den italienischen Espresso-​Liebhaber noch für den 3rdWave-​Nerd das richtige.
Die Bohnen aus Brasilien waren ganz offensichtlich nicht mehr die frischesten und ein wenig zu schwach geröstet. Der Kaffee hatte kaum Crema, die dazu noch unregelmäßig blasig war — auch kein gutes Zeichen.
Wenn man bedenkt, dass es hier außer Kaffee eigentlich nichts anderes zu kaufen gibt, ist das schon ein wenig sonderbar.
Englische Bedienung kann ich tolerieren, ein paar Brocken Deutsch sollten aber schon drin sein, auch in Berlin.

Reminds me 100% of Melbourne and San Francisco. Sleek wood interior which feels a bit cold in cold berlin but can imagine in summer would be fab. Coffee perfect, tastes just like wellington nz. Service good, English speaking.

Einrichtung nett, finde es persönlich jedoch nicht sehr gemütlich. Bedienungen kamen mir etwas gestresst vor.
Von den 3 Bedienungen, die da waren, haben alle direkt englisch mit einem gesprochen.

I’ve been to Silo twice already, and I still can’t figure out how I feel about it – it is located somewhere between three and four-​star territory for me.
First off, the interior is minimal, clean, sleek, and non-​distracting, which I like. That said, it can also feel a bit unwelcoming since there is no real «warmth» to it, plus it is insulated terribly.
The coffee is good, if not a bit bitter for my taste; I am someone who takes my coffee black, yet have had to add some sugar each time to make it better – though they do have brown sugar, which is awesome.
As for the food selection, they usually tend to have a vegan soup or sandwich, and I am looking forward to trying them out one day.
Now that part that really bugs me, and is the reason why there is one less star: no one seems to know how to speak German. Both times I have been to Silo, I have asked the person at the counter questions in German, only to be met with blank stares, the response «huh?» or completely wrong answers in English which indicate the question was not understood. I know this sounds like the Exberliner/​MC debate, and I don’t think there is anything wrong with employing native English speakers at an Australian-​owned coffee spot, but I just think it bizarre that all the people I have dealt with one-​on-​one at Silo don’t speak passable German aside from numbers (or if they do, I wouldn’t know, as they have spoken back to me in English when I continued speaking German). It seems as though the clientele here is all going to be English-​speaking to some degree, but I still think it would be nice if the employees would try a bit harder, on the off-​chance that someone doesn’t speak good enough (or any) English, or just in case a German wants to, you know, speak German in Germany.
That aside though, I like the place, I really do. I just feel that the default of English in a German country is a bit presumptive.

Nice little café for coffee lovers. The interior is a nice change from the typical granny chic with its wood interiors. The staff is nice and the coffee tastes great. They also have free wifi.

Der Cappuchino ist absolut hervorragend. Der beste den ich bisher in B trank, naja vielleicht auch gleichauf mit Five Elephant. Das Ambiente ist sehr stimmig und nciht so beengt wie in manch anderem Café. Es gibt (mindestens eine) Tageszeitung. Die Preise sind angemessen. Die Brownies sind nicht außergewöhnlich aber schon ziemlich gut.
Mittlereweile ist die Schlange oft ganz schön lang. Es gibt nun auch eine größere Auswahl an Speisen.

Ein schwarzer Kaffee, ein Americano, ein verlängerter Expresso — you name it — an diesem Basisgetränk kann man Kaffeeläden gut messen.
Und da fällt das Silo gegen den Vorgänger Karvana glatt durch: säuerlich und nichtssagend kommt der Kaffee daher, bei 2,30 € für eine Cappucinotasse (wie klein ist der kleine?) war ich ziemlich enttäuscht.
Kauft guten Kaffee ein, dann bin ich dabei!

Das Silo ist ein Männer Café. Nein, nicht was ihr denkt… Ich habe nur das Gefühl, dass es von Männern gemacht ist und vielleicht auch ein bisschen für Männer.
Warum?
Einmal liegt es an der Einrichtung. Das Design ist sehr klobig und eckig. Schönes Holz, das muss ich zugeben, es hat auch einen gewissen Stil, ist aber eben doch sehr minimalistisch. Wahrscheinlich könnte man mit den Möbeln Tetris spielen.
Die Kuchenauswahl ist ebenso minimalistisch. Am frühen Sonntagnachmittag gab es gerade mal drei Stücke Lemon Cheesecake. Ansonsten nur eine Sorte Cookies und Brownies. Also eine sehr solide Auswahl. Keine dekorierten Cupcakes, keine hübschen Torten — eben eine männliche Auswahl. Genau wie beim Kaffee: Hier hält man nichts von Sirup-​Aroma-​Sahne-​Mischmasch, hier gibt es nur ehrlichen, soliden Kaffee auf der Karte.
Dann die Deko: kein Kerzchen, kein Blümchen und vor allem kein Kissen oder wenigstens ein weiches Polster auf den harten Holzstühlen. Gemütlich versinken und mit der besten Freundin quatschen? Née, das wäre hier nicht so meins. Hier kommt man nicht zum Verweilen, hier kommt man wahrscheinlich mit dem Gedanken: Ich will nen Kaffee, ich will nen Brownie, aber bloß kein Klimbim. Passt.
Das Silo wird also nicht «mein» Café, das steht schon mal fest. Und doch vergebe ich dicke 4 Sterne.
Warum?
Auch wenn die Einrichtung nicht meinen Geschmack trifft, war es hier sauber und aufgeräumt.
Und auch wenn die Kuchenauswahl nicht groß war, so kann ich doch behaupten, dass der Brownie ganz hervorragend war und mit 2 Euro auch einen vernünftigen Preis hatte. Wenn man den jetzt noch warm und mit Vanilleeis bekommen könnte… Halt, das wäre schon wieder zu viel Klimbim ;)
Mein Latte Macchiato war zwar echt lecker, hatte aber keine hübschen Schichten und die mit Abstand dünnste Milchschaumschicht, die ich je hatte. Ja, da ist es wieder, das fehlende Klimbim :) Erstaunlicherweise gab es aber eine Schaummalerei — es ist mir völlig schleierhaft wie das in 0,5 cm Schaum geht…
Auch über das Personal kann ich nicht meckern. Die Verständigung auf Deutsch hakt zwar ein bisschen — fast hätte mein Begleiter ein Käsebaguette bekommen anstelle vom bestellten Cheesecake — aber das passt schon. Alle waren freundlich.
Für 5 Sterne reicht es leider nicht, denn dazu fehlt mir persönlich die gewisse Portion Klimbim sowie zwei Kuchen mehr in der Vitrine. Aber hey, macht weiter so! Meinem Mann hat es ganz hervorragend gefallen: D

A bit of San Francisco Mission culture albeit kein hipsters
(The crowd: mostly parents with babies with reaching hands, guess all the other hostel hopping visitors arent hip to the brew).
Chopping block minimal country décor, and fancy distillery for the beans. The coffee tastes good, IS creamy, and most importantly: the staff are knowledgeable enough to distinguish between an espresso machiato and café cortado (size!).
In Berlin fashion, one of the bathrooms (surprisingly for the rest of the outfitting) isn’t functioning, dont think they have honey for tea (yet? i had overheard someone ordering), and the staff isnt German speaking. (Guess I cant complain since I barely am.)

Easily the best coffee shop in entire Friedrichshain.
They take coffee very serious — no matter if you’re into Espresso based drinks or filter coffee. They currently get beans from The Barn (a huge plus) and also do cuppings every so often.
Sandwiches are awesome as well, and everyone working here is extremely polite and friendly.

Tja, nun bin ich mal wieder im Silo gewesen. Versprochen ist versprochen. Erst recht, wenn die erste Kritik nicht so berauschend ausfiel.
Was hat sich geändert?
1. Heute waren die damals so kritisierten Muffins nicht im Angebot
2. Man kann auch schon in Landessprache kommunizieren
3. Der Laden war voll, was ja wohl auf Kundenzufriedenheit hindeutet
Was hat sich nicht geändert, was ist gut?
1. Die Auswahl zwischen einem Kuchen, Chili-​Brownies und zwei Sorten Kekse ist nicht gerade breit für ein Café. Da hat man wohl immer noch Angst nicht alles absetzen zu können
2. Der Jasmintee war nach wie vor gut
3. Die Bodrum-​Doppelwand-​Tassen sind schön anzusehen und auch haptisch die optimale Variante um heiße Getränke zu servieren.
Hatte außerdem die Chili-​Brownies. Scharf war da aber nichts, obwohl deutlich Chili-​Teilchen zu sehen waren. Dafür süß-​salzig. Kannte ich so noch nicht.
Die Konsistenz der Brownies kann man als klebrig bezeichnen, teils wie weiche Sahnebonbons. Das muss nicht negativ sein, wenn man auf Klietschkuchen steht.
Aber nach meiner Beobachtung haben die anderen Gäste sowieso nur Kaffee getrunken. Der muss dann wohl gut sein, das kann ich als Teetrinker nicht einschätzen. Ein offenbarer Kaffee-​Kenner sieht das aber so
Hier und dort saß mal einer, der zum Getränk noch Kekse hatte. Ende. Ganz puristisch.
Das, was man unter einem Café im klassischen Sinn versteht, ist das Silo also nicht.
Ich denke, dass wer nur bei Kaffee sitzen und plaudern will, die oder der ist hier genau richtig.
Und es scheint genug Nachfrage zu geben.
Befände sich das Silo in Reinickendorf, Tegel-​Süd, Siedlung Waldidyll, wo es auf den Quadratkilometer zwei Restaurants und ein Café gibt, ich wäre als dortiger Anwohner definitiv Stammgast mit nicht weniger als 5 Besuchen pro Woche.

The coffee was nice and creamy like what we were used to in London (loved the latte art!), which is hard to find in Berlin. We also loved the atmosphere and the décor. Will definitely be back!

Super Kaffee, nette Bedienung, angenehm dezente Inneneinrichtung leicht rustikal.
Erwähnte ich schon den unwahrscheinlich guten Kaffee?!

Ein Kaffee dieser Art hat in diesem Kiez auf jeden Fall gefehlt.
Die Dinrichtung ist einzigartig und auf eine angenehme Art stylisch. (allerdings sind manche Sitzgelegenheiten nicht für einen mehrstündigen Aufenthalt geeignet! ;-)) Der Kaffee (hatte eine Flat White) ist hervorragend.
Und der Brownie ist weltklasse! Ich kann auf jeden Fall empfehlen, mal vorbeizuschauen!

Ich war seit der Eröffnung des Silo Café bereits 3x da.
Da ich leidenschaftlicher Kaffeetrinker bin, hat mich die Qualität und Zubereitung bereits bei meinem ersten Besuch überzeugt.
Es gibt eine kleine Auswahl an Sandwiches und Kuchen.
Das Schinken /​Käse Sandwich war gut, der Brownie hervorragend.
Ich kann den Laden, neben den o.g. Punkten auch wegen der Einrichtung empfehlen.
Sieht echt klasse aus!
