SANDEMANs New Europe

I took the free Berlin walking tour with my tour guide being Lizzy. We met at Starbucks just before 11 near brandenburg gate.
We were handed tickets with a number on them and told to stand on this ‘island’and wait for our tour guide who would call out a number. The tour started shortly after 11. Lizzy introduced herself as a German American who studied the German language and German history. She has lived in Berlin for slightly over a year. She gave us a quick intro of how the tour would work ie we would cover three periods in German history — nazi Germany, German republic and I can’t remember the third one.
She started off with an introduction to the brandenburg gate and said that walking through it would take us to east berlin. Our stops included the holocaust memorial (made up of 2700 blocks), Hitler’s bunker (now located under a used parking lot), the oldest hotel in Berlin (popularly known for mj dangling baby blanket outside his window), Berlin wall while standing on the death strip, checkpoint Charlie, Germany’s prior air force building, with the tour ending at gendarmenmarkt.
We stopped around 12.30 for toilet break, coffee and food.
Lizzy has a loud voice, is very knowledgeable and very approachable when asked questions.
It is a great free tour where you pay what you think its worth (usually from € 10 euros up).
However, I thought having 32 people on the tour made it hard to actually see the sights. Perhaps limiting th number of people that book places would be good especially since the tour runs three times during the day and everyday.

I took the free walking tour with Rosa, and it was a great way to learn about Berlin. The guide was AMAZING, she was very informative about the history, locations in tour, and other locations not covered. She also gave great advice afterwards for places to see, restaurants to eat at, and other activities to do. I was very hesitant to do such a long walking tour (it was also raining), but our guide was very funny and informative, which made the whole tour incredibly enjoyable.
While I’m still skeptical about the whole free walking tour business model, I definitely had a good time, learned quite a bit about the city and history, and would recommend it to others. Try to go with Rosa if you have a choice!

Una muy buena opción para tener un vistazo de lugares importantes de la historia de Berlín es el free walking tour que sale todos los días a las 11. El tour dura un poco más de 2 horas y te permite conocer la historia detrás de las plazas, calles y edificios.
Al terminar pasado el mediodía, te da la opción de volver y explorar más los lugares visitados o seguir recorriendo la ciudad.

This was our first SANDEMANs tour, and it was pretty clear what all the buzz is about. So basically, if you’re not familiar with the concept, it’s a «free» tour, where you pay at the end whatever you felt it was worth; this acts as incentive for the freelance tour guides to provide the best possible service. They don’t get paid by SANDEMAN’s, so what you «tip» them is what they make (minus a cut for the company).
While I’m sure experiences differ from guide to guide, our guide Mark was excellent. It was clear he studied German history, and he was able to relate what we saw with what happened in the past. He didn’t sugarcoat anything and provided valuable insights about what we were looking at.
Among the things we looked at: Brandenburg Gate, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the car park where Hitler was originally buried, some government buildings, Checkpoint Charlie, Gendarmenmarkt Square, and Humboldt University.
The tour lasted about two hours, and despite it being a relatively large group (around 25 people), it was easy to hear/​understand and Mark did a great job keeping everyone together and answering individual questions.
For reference, we paid around 10 – 15 EUR per person.

Die Meinung der anderen kann ich jetzt leider nicht teilen, vielleicht hatten wir auch einfach nur Pech !
Wir waren an unserem ersten Tag in der Touristeninformation und haben uns die verschiedensten Flayer mitgenommen, bei zwei Tagen hat man viel zu tun um sehr viel zu sehen, da kam uns der Stadtrundgang grade recht ! Wir waren auch brav zu der Uhrzeit am Starbucks, auf dem Flayer stand Gruppen ab 10 Personen sollten sich anmelden soweit so gut !
Wir waren ungefähr 8 Personen und es hieß aufeinmal wir müßten mindestens15 Personen sein, damit der Rundgang stattfindet, es wurde damit argumentiert das eine Englische Gruppe sehr viele Leute hatte und dadurch der Stadtführer für die Deutschen Besucher dort mit aushelfen sollte, weil wir ja sowenig waren, auf dem Flayer stand aber leider nichts von einer mindest Personenanzahl !
Unsere Enttäuschung war natürlich sehr groß und wir können es so nicht weiter empfehlen !

I ve done this tour on different european cities. It is a great way to get your bearings on the city that you are visiting. Usually the guides are quite nice and some give you more information than others.

Die Tour in Berlin war gut. Leider natürlich sehr viel Laufstrecke zwischen den einzelnen Attraktionen die man sich anschaut aber da kann der Stadtführer auch nichts führ.
Ansonsten tolle Tour das Angebot von Sandemanns würde ich mir für noch viel mehr Städte danken :)

Five stars for our guide, zero stars for the material covered in the tour I assume that this is not the guide’s choice. I appreciated the introduction that Berlin and Germany’s history is much more that 1939 – 1945 but it is a shame that this is all the free tour focussed on. Anglosaxon people already have a very limited knowledge and interest in Germany and her history. Use this chance to change that!!! Shame.

In the interest of full disclosure: I used to be a «SANDEMANs» guide,
and so this may very well be seen as innappropriate by some. But as I
was the person actually «employing» SANDEMANs, I am perhaps the
correct person to be reviewing the company.
There are many fantastic guides working WITH the company, but it is
worth noting that they (mostly) don’t work FOR SANDEMANs. Please note
the phrasing on their website:
«SANDEMANs NEW Europe supports local small business by helping
independent free-​lance tour guides find a voice for their passion. By
providing marketing services for local entrepreneurs, we take away
some of the stress of developing a marketing strategy and allow
fantastic independent tour guides the freedom to focus on what they do
best.»
In other words, the guides pay the company for «marketing services.»
These can be sums of around 100EUR for a «free tour» and 300EUR for a
«ticketed tour.» This means that the guides themselves are also
responsible for paying the relevant taxes and insurances themselves,
and most don’t bother because they’re not planning on staying in
Berlin, or don’t have to be reviewed by the immigration office.
I made the decision to terminate my working relationship with
SANDEMANs over six months ago because they raised the prices for their
services and couldn’t provide answers to my questions about where
exactly all of the money I was paying them was going: for example.
what percentage was being used locally, and how much was used to
support another city.
So yes, the «free tour» does provide you with a good introduction to
the city, with some innacurracies depending on the guide and their
backgrounds. However, when you tip the guide at the end, be aware that
you are also indirectly paying SANDEMANs exorbitant prices for
«marketing services.»

… war im Sommer dieses Jahres hier… und na klar wie soll es anders sein eien lange schlange war das erste was wir gesehen haben… aber nach 35 min waren wir drin, für 19EUR pro Person… es war nett aber ich denk wenn mal London schon kennt muß Berliun nicht noch mal sein… weil auch die Räumlichkeiten nicht gerade so groß sind… muß jeder selber wissen, ob man sich das antun möchte…

Jeden Tag, egal bei welchem Wetter, startet am Brandenburger Tor vor dem Starbucks die kostenlose Tour von New Europe. Zu Fuß erkundet man ca 3,5 h die wichtigsten Stellen Berlins, wie z.B. Brandenburger Tor, Reichstag, Mahnmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas, Berliner Mauer,… Hier wird nicht nur stupides geschichtliches Wissen vermittelt, sondern auch viele Geschichten drumherum. Die Tour ist komlett gratis. Wer möchte, kann aber am Ende Trinkgeld geben und das tut man hier auch wirklich gern. Danke Matti!
Und wer schon oft als Tourist in Berlin war und meint in Berlin alles gut zu kennen, der sollte sich event. mal der Alternative City Tour anschließen. Die 12 Euro sind eine gute Investition.

das die Touren durch in Berlin verliebte Akademiker geführt werden, bedeutet leider noch nicht, dass sie fachlich richtig sind.
und wenn man kostenlose Touren anbietet, sollte nicht immer wieder um Trinkgelder betteln über die sich die Touren refinanzieren
ansonsten jedem das Seine! wer an Geiz ist geil glaubt, hat nicht mehr verdient.

This tour is a fantastic way to get acquainted with Berlin with a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide. You are taken to many of the main sites of interest, including the site above Hitler’s bunker, checkpoint charlie, a section of the wall and the site where the book burning took place.
It is a FREE tour but by the end of it you just cannot help tipping the tour guide for their time and their enthusiasm for the history of Berlin.
Personally I found the tour very interesting and informative and would highly recommend it to visitors to Berlin.

Jetzt einen Sherry, vielleicht einen Sandeman?
Wer einen Sandeman vor Augen hat, denkt zwar in der Regel an einen schönen Sherry. Das in der Sandeman-​Dynastie aber nur etwas werden darf, wer vorher in einem komplett anderen Métier erfolgreich selbständig gewesen ist, ist ein interessanter Ansatz für eine ambitionierte Ausbildung, die auch für Menschen wie mich eine lohnende Komponente hat. Chris bietet nämlich unter dem Namen Sandemans NEW Berlin Tour, kostenlose Stadtpläné und –rundgänge an.
Seine Guides sind in der Regel Akademiker aus aller Welt, die während des Studiums oder danach selber den Reizen unserer Hauptstadt erlegen sind.
So werden die Touren auf Deutsch, Englisch und inzwischen auch Spanisch veranstaltet, geführt durch sog. Native Speaker, die durch ein T-​Shirt gekennzeichnet, die wissenshungrigen Touristen für eine Tour durch den Westen am Bahnhof Zoo vor dem Schmalzbäcker DunkinDonuts, für eine Tour durch den Osten bei Starbucks am Brandenburger Tor vis-​a-​vis des Hotel Adlon, abholen.
Der Klassiker, der normale Stadtrundgang dauert rund 3,5 Stunden und führt vom Brandenburger Tor über das Holocaust Mahnmal und den Checkpoint Charlie an allen bekannten und nicht so bekannten Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt vorbei.
Da die Führer auch nicht nur von der Berliner Luft leben, finanzieren sie sich durch Trinkgelder. Und wenn das die einzige Einnahmequelle ist, dann ist man entsprechend motiviert und engagiert.
Da Chris selber Englisch spricht, war dieser Service ursprünglich auch den englisch sprechenden Touristen zugedacht. Um die Tour bekannt zu machen, liegen entsprechende Flyer in allen Läden aus, die ein junger Mann aus Amerika oder England als Erstes anlaufen würde: Starbucks, DunkinDonuts und Subway.
Die besten Tipps für günstiges Essen, finanzierbare Unterkünfte und die coolsten Bars, findet man in diesen Flyern, die auf der Rückseite einen Stadtplan von Berlin-​Mitte tragen, zusätzlich.
Sandeman hat auch noch ein paar andere Touren, z.B. die Red Tour (kommunistische Spuren), die 3^rd Reich Tour (wie der Name schon sagt) und eine Tour ins KZ Sachsenhausen, die rund 10 EUR kosten. Dafür ist dort in der Regel der öffentliche Nahverkehr inkludiert.
Und unter sehr jungen Leuten der absolute Renner ist der Pub Crawl, der durch fünf heiße Bars und Clubs führt, Freibier und Sonderpreise beinhaltet und jeden Abend um 21 h an einer Ecke an der Oranienburger Straße startet.
Dieses Angebot gibt es inzwischen auch in München, Potsdam und Hamburg, außerdem in einigen der großen europäischen Metropolen wie z.B. Paris.
Wenn die Sache also weiter so erfolgreich läuft, dann wird Chris sicher bald in die Familienzentrale gerufen und muss sich fortan um Sherry kümmern Der ist dann aber nicht mehr kostenlos.
