House Of Small Wonder

Aesthetic here is incredible and worth 3 stars just on its own. Food was good, drinks were great.

Came to this place for breakfast, the food and coffee were delicious. The aesthetic is awesome too.

Very nice place. The food was very good, but what makes this place great is the decoration and atmosphere of the place. Many small trinkets hanging around everywhere that make you think you’re visiting one of the famous flea markets in Berlin.

This place is so cute! It might be hard to spot from the outside. Look for the chalkboard signs they placed on the outside of the building, then walk up the cute stairs to the restaurant.
We came here for lunch on a Monday and we were seated right away.
The staff speaks English and they have an English menu.
We ordered the following items:
–Soboro Don: This was okay.
–Okinawan Taco Rice: My whole group loved this dish!

Food was just so-​so. Menu was not too varied. Sandwiches were small — you really get ripped off choosing the one sandwich meal, which is only 2 euro less than the two sandwich meal. Tea was overpriced. Décor underwhelming. However, granola was tasty and yogurt fresh. I liked the staircase. Ok if you’re in the area but not worth a special trek.

Whow, I have never been treated this badly at a restaurant in my entire life. Only go there if you are okay with being treated like DIRT, if you don’t tip! I did not leave a high tip, because they only accepted cash and offering card payment to me is part of the SERVICE. The waiter totally lost his cool and then snickered as we left — all because of a tip. Inexcusable behavior from people who think Germans should tip like Americans in Germany. This is Berlin, not Brooklyn. Food is alright.
Anyways, I am never going back there again. There are far too many good breakfast places in Berlin to cry over this one.

Let me start off by saying that if I could use half stars, this would be 4 ½ stars! If fact I would give it 5 except for something quite small. One thing I had today was the croissant French toast and well for me i didn’t think it should have been called French toast. Being American and going to brunch, when something is called French toast it would be some type of bread or pastry dipped in egg and then cooked… The croissant here was missing the dipped in egg part. But to be honest I was only slightly disappointed because it was still very good.
I also had the Croque Madame which was excellent and my friends had the Benedict which they loved. I also loved the idea of a Matcha Latte and it was great.
I will definitely be back and will probably change my rating to 5 stars!

This Berlin outcast of a popular Brooklynite brunch/​lunch spot is something different. And I mean that in an obviously good way. HOSW is something you’ll hardly find in the ever-​changing Berlin restaurant landscape.
Warm, bright interior. Lots of plants. Like a greenhouse.
Up the winding stairs. Get seated by your English speaking waiter. Study the menu with weekly lunch specials.
The food can be best described as a mix of Western brunch items with a Japanese twist. Small plates, but delicious. It’s easy to find an item that you probably have never eaten before. Eggs Benedict on a rice biscuit? Tex-​Mex with Okinawa Taco Rice? Or Soboro Don, which is ground chicken and scrambled organic egg over rice.
Execution is art, and HOSW delivers.

There is a lot of hype surrounding this place, so we expected a lot and were very disappointed. They made us wait for almost 40 minutes although there was plenty of space upstairs and it did not look like it was reserved, because no one showed up there. The food was very boring — we ordered two Japanese dishes, chicken with eggs and spinach was very dry and boring, also a bit cold, same with the ratatouille. The interior is amazing, that’s why we give it 3 stars and hope they will work out their issues, as this place has plenty of potential.

Great food, wonderful service. Busy spot at lunch. Coffee was very good. The Benedict breakfast was very good.

Toller Laden in Mitte, der durch Lage und Ambiente durchaus New Yorker Flair vermittelt. Die Speisekarte ist klein ab fein. Sehr guter Macha Latte. Kundschaft sind vor allem Businessleute, die hier gerne zum Lunch kommen. Zur Mittagszeit, kann es also vor allem in der Woche sehr voll sein.

Das Gute zuerst: Die Location ist mit sehr viel Liebe zum Detail eingerichtet, und man kann 3 – 4 Sterne allein für die Einrichtung vergeben. Muss man aber nicht. Wir hatten uns nach langer Zeit mal wieder zu viert verabredet (zum Brunch), wir hatten reserviert, und das hat alles sehr gut geklappt.
Außerdem hatten wir uns auf die amerikanisch-​asiatische Ausrichtung des House of Small Wonder gefreut. Da gab es die erste Einschränkung, denn das japanische Frühstück war aus. Ok, nicht so schlimm, was gibt es sonst so? Eggs Benedict in verschiedenen Varianten. Haben gleich zwei von uns genommen. Allerdings war das Ei noch fast roh. Klar, ist schwierig, diesen Punkt zu treffen, wo das Eiweiß schon geronnen ist und der Dotter noch nicht. Aber darum bereite ich mir das auch nicht zu Hause zu, sondern gehe dazu in ein Restaurant. Das war… hmm, kurz vor ekelig. Dazu kam noch, dass ein Getränk vergessen wurde und wir eine kleine Ewigkeit keinen weiteren Kaffee bestellen konnten. Das ist selbst für Berlin ein rekordverdächtig unaufmerksamer Service.
Vielleicht war das kleine Wunder auch gerade ausgegangen und das Haus hatte einen schlechten Tag…

It’s a beautiful, cozy place tucked off a busy street. The croissant with goat cheese avocado and the pork miso breakfast were worth trying to find the place. Great coffee and great lemonade punch.

Das Essen, die Getränke als auchb der Sevrice sind super freundlich. Das Ambiente ist toll…
aber die Preise sind happig. Dafür schmeckt der Matcha Latte wunderbar :)

Such a charming little place. Had breakfast there on a quiet Tuesday morning and it was great. Delicious food and the best coffee I had the entire week in Berlin.

I had read about this place on the internet. As a Japan lover I simply had to go there and I wasn’t disappointed! It’s a hidden gem! From the outside there is no sign, no nothing. Once you go in, it feels like you entered a different world. The interior is plain beautiful, the staff is nice, the food a mixture of American and Japanese cuisine. My mum had the melon salad, I had the eggs benedict. Both meals were tasty, not to pricey. Can’t wait to try out the Matcha Latte! We will be back!

Das Ambiente mit guter angenehmer Musik und Design lädt zum verweilen ein. Die Architektur ist unerwartet, da es sich um ein Bürogebäude handelt…
Die Besucher sind Touristen, ein paar Hipster und Geschäftsleute.
Das Essen ist gut… ein wenig schade, dass nicht konsequent auf Asiatisch gesetzt wurde sondern auch Französisch/​Amerikanische Leckereien zu finden sind… aber ist ja egal… lecker ist es:)

Ich war zum Mittagstisch hier. Herrliches Ambiente, aber für den Preis (11 €) war ich von meinem Gericht (Okinawan Taco Rice) nicht allzu begeistert.
Der service war nett und das essen wirkte Frisch, aber für den Preis einfach etwas zu wenig für ein Mittagsangebot.
Ich komme dennoch gerne wieder und probiere ein Frühstück am Wochenende, vielleicht ist das eher nach meinem Geschmack.

Such a relaxing ambiance and lovely staff. I had been to the location in Brooklyn and this place far exceeded my expectations. The décor is enough to pull you in but stay for the croque Madame, sandwich options, Benedict breakfast weekend special, and so much more. Perfectly well curated tunes as well, playing lots of Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, even some Tom Jones and songs that all make you never want to leave!

Wer erwartet in der Spandauer Vorstadt so einen Laden?
Wir waren am 11. April dort und waren sehr angetan von der Atmosphäre und der sehr gelungenen Einrichtung. Sicher alles sehr auf jugendliches — meist weibliches — Publikum ausgerichtet, fühlt man sich sofort wohl und wird auch gleich freundlich aufgenommen. Schon der Eingangsbereich im EG und der Weg nach Oben in das eigentliche Restaurant sind «Hingucker».
Die selbstgemachte eisgekühlte Limonade ist hervorragend und mit 4,00 € bezahlbar. Die Sandwiches sollte man schon als Menu bestellen, sonst wird es doch ein wenig «schmal»
Ich wünsche dem Laden viel Erfolg.
Ein Tipp: über etwas längere Öffnungszeiten lohnt es sich vielleicht nachzudenken.

Lovely place with amazing décor and the best service one can find in Berlin.
During my short Berlin trip, I came twice to this place. It was our favorite spot in the city. The food is tastefully with a Japanese twist and the croissants are amazing.

Wir waren mit 4 Personen und einem Baby zum Sonntagsfrühstück. Hier unser Resümee:
Super freundlicher Service und Schöné Location zum gucken und sitzen und schnacken.
Essen war lecker, aber nicht sehr innovativ, daher «nur» 4 Sterne. Preise fanden wir ok und angemessen.
Achtung: nicht barrierefrei… (Kinderwagen musste unten bleiben)

Och! war mein dominanter Gedanke beim Verlassen des HOSW. Irgendwie hatte ich mir né ganze Menge mehr erhofft. Zumindest ja so ein kleines Wunder. Ein Kleinod. Ein Wow!
Toll ist, und vielleicht ist das Wunder genug (?), dass an unerwarteter Stelle ein unerwartet asiatisches Ambiente aufwartet. Mit Wendeltreppe in den zweiten Stock geleitet sogar mit feinem Blick auf den Friedrichstadtpalst von schräg hinten links ;)
Ernsthaft alles ist hier Vögelchen und Bambus und so wie sich der Berliner ein Café in Vietnam vorstellt. Die bedienen Mädels sind super freundlich und versuchen, einem jeden Wunsch zu erfüllen. Aber wieso muss ich mir das Dressing zum Salat erst extra wünschen?
Warum stehen Croissants und Cookies auf der Theke? Warum wird hier nicht gewürzt? Schon gar nicht asiatisch? Warum gibt es Sandwich? Und Ratatouille — letzteres so offensichtlich mit diesen in Ringen geschnittenen geschmacklosen Oliven? Da komm ich mir nicht nur irritiert, da komm ich mir ziemlich verraten vor, was dazu führte, dass ich tatsächlich nicht aufass — ein Fakt, der bei mir selten vorkommt.
Liebes HOSW, lasst uns ein mittelgrosses Wunder tun! Stellt einen anständigen Koch ein und überarbeitet euer Menü — wenn ihr Empfehlungen braucht, ruft mich an: D

Popped by House of Small Wonder a Saturday morning, but having already eaten breakfast we settled for a cup of Sencha tea, an Americano and a croissant. The drinks and pastry was fine, but our order did not quite put the kitchen to the test, so this review is more about the general experience.
House of Small Wonder is situated in a pretty bland looking building, but as soon as you step inside you are met by a beautiful swirled staircase, which leads you upstairs into a nicely decorated open space dining area. The place seemed quite popular, and both locals and tourists were manning the seats at the tables, enjoying either the breakfast or all-​day brunch (lunch is also available). The staff was polite and the overall atmosphere was very relaxed and pleasant.

We came there for brunch, and had to wait 25 min for a table which Was fine. The service Was really polite and The place was nice and cozy.
We had The sandwiches, granola, ginger drink and coffe. Everything Was amazing! I really recomend This place and would definately go back.

Das Essen hat amerikanischen Stil und ist daher wirklich nicht gut gemacht. Die Preise sind viel zu hoch und absolut nicht gerechtfertigt. Für Berlin zu teuer, aufgesetzt und nicht echt. Schade!
Personal und Interieur freundlich und echt cool, dafür einen von fünf Sternen.

So, Erstbesuch absolviert, satt geworden, Leute geguckt, Spaß gehabt. Das Licht einiger Reviews wirft irgendwie einen Schatten auf einige der over-​hippen Gäste und Autoren. Aber schnell mal der Reihe nach:
Sonntag Hunger, oft vorbeigelaufen, nun einfach mal probiert was ging. Erster Eindruck — Kaninchendraht + Holzjalousien = fertig ist der Mitte-​Asia-​Style (tasächlich fehlen zum District Mot aber nicht nur Stromleitungen, sondern noch einiges mehr).
Der Laden brummt, mittags sind hier hippe Leute und Touristen scharenweise zu finden, alle benehmen sich ganz gut und der Service (heute die kleinste Person im Laden) behält Nerven, Ruhe und Überblick. Zweiter Eindruck: superfreundlich, ich habe 2 extrem nette, entspannte Serviceleute kennengelernt — nicht selbstverständlich!
Trotz belegter Tische sucht man den Gästen (außer sie rücken zu viert oder sechst an, tz) ein freies Eckchen an den größeren Tischen, «bis ein Tisch frei wird», wenn da nicht die Küche einen Strich durch die Rechnung macht.
Dritter Eindruck: Taco Rice bestellt, einmal an der Cola genippt (Afri! Yes!), schon ist das Essen da — wer soll da noch auf einen Tisch warten wollen (mit den Nachbarn ist man da schon ins Gespräch gekommen :)
Und nun ein ganz kleiner Einbruch: Natürlich ist das irgendwie «Asia Bolognese», was man da bekommt. Die Bilder zeigen es gut. Aber: es ist mit diversen Extrazutaten stimmig gepimpt und schmeckt einfach sehr sehr gut. Als Avodaco-​Fan hatten sie mich bereits beim Anblick des Tellers. Als ordentlicher Esser hatten sie mich das 2. Mal bei der wirklich ordentlichen Portionsgröße. Dank Ei drüber (erstmal ordentlich reingemixt à la Yam Yam) wirklich auch geschmacklich tip-​top-​im-​Galopp.
Nu, bevor ich ins Schwärmen gerate, probiere ich die nächsten Wochen nochmal das eine oder andere andere. Draußen sitzen, das wird wohl nicht passieren, dafür trifft man drinnen keine Kinderwagen dank Wendeltreppe, und die Tische am Klo bieten tollen Ausblick auf das Samwer-​Imperium zu Füßen des Restaurants ;)
Für das, was ich bekommen hab (große Portion, frische Zutaten, super Geschmack) ist auch der Preis (max. 10 € pro Hauptgericht) in Ordnung — natürlich geht’s auch günstiger, aber eben auch teurer. Denke dran: NUR Bargeld wird genommen.
Update (noch ohne Desserts): Soboro Don ist lecker, es fehlt aber der Anlass zu Begeisterungsstürmen wie oben.
Also: Weiteres Update folgt (dann auch mit Desserts!) — evtl. auch mal ein Brunch.

The first time I came here was for brunch and there was a bit of a wait being the weekend and right after opening. The croissant French toast was good, but more like a cinnamon croissant then a drenched, heavy battered French toast (American style). Everyone liked the tsukune don — one of my favorite Japanese comfort dishes.
Next time I came back at lunch and ordered the Okinawan taco rice. It looked much better than it tasted, the pork was a bit too sweet and saucy, could have been nicer if the flavors were balanced, but I like the idea (not sure how the real one is supposed to taste).
Extra star for décor, the design and décor is charming and I would come back here with friends for the atmosphere and setting.

it was amazing. soooooo delicious and also amazing foods. i didnt expect here before i visit here. but now its the on of the favorite place in berlin.
i ordered todays manu, and it was quite awesome. with sweet soya sauce it was great.
and my friend ordered also one of the todays menu. and it was so fresh and so amazing.
avocado was really nice.
price is not thaaaat cheap but i think its okay for those food. design is also super. this is small house of wonder!

Nettes Café /​Restaurant um die Ecke am Friedrichstadtpalast mit Frühstück und Lunch Angebot mit japanischer Prägung. Der Okinawan Taco Rice und die Chicken Meatballs waren zu empfehlen. Das Angebot an Speisen und Getränken ist ansonsten recht übersichtlich aber dennoch unbedingt mal auszuprobieren. Das Personal war sehr freundlich und die Location zumindest am Wochenende sehr beliebt (evtl. vorher reservieren ansonsten warten).

Ich liebe diesen Laden. Habe né Freundin hier zum Brunchen getroffen, es war erst mal schwer das Café zu finden, da es keine Namenstafel/​Außenwerbung hat. Nach erfolgreichem durchfragen haben auch wir es gefunden. Das Glück war auf unserer Seite, da wir sofort einen Tisch bekamen. Mitarbeiter sind super freundlich, die Speisekarte klein aber fein, die Einrichtung war richtig interessant, irgendwie wie in Saigon. Haben uns den Matcha Cappucino, hausgemachten und ungesüßten Ice Tea, Granola, Croissants mit Joghurt und frischem Obst, den Curry und natürlich die Hähnchenbällchen bestellt. Fazit: Ich will mehr! Jetzt sind wir aber erst mal satt, das heißt man sieht sich wieder.

This place is amazing for a small tea break with some nice sandwiches and cake. Unfortunately this brasserie serve their food in extremely small plates. The food is pricey and small but super fresh and delicious.
I won’t come here for lunch again but I’ll be back for their matcha cappuchino and their adorable interior. I am not joking I fell in love with this place. Still not sure by a 100% but the concept reminds me on an artist studio from the late 19^th century or the early 20^th. (I looked up Cézanne’s and Monets studio but not convinced yet)
This concept is based on a restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY and it seems that the staff is originally from New York as well. So if your German is weak you can order in English as well (might be even easier than German).
I’d give this place 5 stars if the dishes would be bigger but it’s okay. I still love it here because if you are in love with somebody/​something you have to accept the flaws as well and that’s what I do!

Hippe, neue Location zum Brunchen und Lunchen in Mitte. Die Asiaten scheinen zunehmend den Bezirk zu rocken, ob Monsieur Vong, District Mot oder Shiso Burger, HoSW besticht durch Stil, Coolness und ach ja… interessantes Essen! Japanische Nudeln mit Spiegelei auf Pilzen, die ich noch nie gegessen habe und on top Fish Flakes. War lecker, aber leider nicht wirklich warm. Und alles ein bisschen teurer als woanders, aber dafür isst das Auge hier eben mit! Die Bedienung war bei uns etwas proaktiv, abgeräumt wurde schon, als noch nicht alle fertig waren und die Rechnung kam zügig und unaufgefordert. Das mit dem Service üben wir vielleicht noch mal. Insgesamt noch Luft nach oben!
