I went here for the first time as part if the Unilocal Kieztour and I really liked this bar. The bar looks a lot smaller from the outside than it actually is, inside there is a back room where performances etc take, which makes it a great size to be able to go just with one friend or a small group. The interior is all reminiscent of Bowie, but for some, to me unknown, reason, Heroes has turned into a French hangout. All in all a great little bar that will definitely be visiting again!

How can you not like a place with a Bowie reference, in Berlin? The reliable standby for ‘where do you wanna meet?’ in the kiez. It’s cozy, low-key, not pretentious(though some customers are hehe) and the German/French/English speaking staff actually seem to enjoy speaking with you. Also, it is one of the very few places where I can go near my place where I know there will be CAKE. I am honestly not a fan of most of the ‘backerei’ German cakes that have that fruit jelly layer on top. Heroes has carrot cake and a yummy basic chocolate cake regularly. Plus they have basic café food(including ROSTI! yeah!!!) such as salads, quiches, sandwiches. THOUGH i have HEARD(*cry*) that they have recently transitioned into a bar only, so will be opening only after 17h. No more cake??? I know, cheap beer sells better than good tasting food in Berlin, alas. I have been traveling for about a month now so when i get back to Berlin I guess I will have to check out the new Bowie Bar.

Heroes sums up some of my favorite bits about Berlin and especially, i think, this little corner of the city: a spot that’s ostensibly one thing(e.g. a coffeeshop-café) succeeds as something bigger, an active and evolving kiez-cultural center.(i feel you see the same at Sing Blackbird, the nice café-cum-secondhandbazaar-cum-arthouse afew blocks away.) Heroes has the hallmarks of most of this area’s cozy cafés with eclectic furniture+warm lighting in a bit of a gutted-apartment feel, housemade cakes, all manner of teas+coffees and alcoholic drinks(including beer, wine, some digestivi, shots and longdrinks…), etc. but what sets it apart is what it does from there. the place has more than a tinge of francophilia(they boast 87.5% of their staff is french…) and so most things have a french twist: their little library is stocked mostly with French titles(some English+German too); their Sunday brunch is billed as French/American(think crêpes and pain perdu vs. bacon+eggs and pancakes… see menu photos); their simple dinners are *often* influenced by French cuisine(but apparently not always… tonight: sweet potatoes+coconut milk soup and honeyed chicken+noodles); and they’ll always whip you up a crêpe as a snack. from there, Heroes weaves in a welcoming community-vibe, with Tuesday’s themed film screenings(this month: «America Gets Political»!); Thursday’s ‘Cantine de Jeudi’ with tasty traditional French meals for a pittance; and then changing art installations, music quizzes, concerts, and book exchanges. Heroes can sometimes be smoky(which isn’t for me) and i’ll be honest: the sparse concrete-y walls, linoleum floor and random, vintage-shabby-chic furniture sometimes gives me the feel of an apartment that’s just been moved into and hasn’t quite found its«gemütlichkeit». *but* Heroes feels like a HOME nonetheless, one with tasty espresso, fantastic bathroom art(trust me), fast wireless and great music on the stereo… and sometimes, if you time it gloriously right, you might even get a tasty childhood memory in the form of a chocolate chip cookie, straight from the oven…

A really great place to relax over a cup of coffee or have a great meal. The staff is nice and interior feels good. And they serve a wide selections of various french dishes and alcohol. Plus the prices are very low considering the value you are getting. Love the place.

A wonderful and friendly bar in Neukölln. It’s open since one or two months. The owners are really proud of their brand new bar and they have good reasons to: decoration, music, concept, the coffee-machine, german beers, etc etc… They are really active in Berlin and know a lot of things about concerts, events and parties. You could guess their interest and love for Berlin in the way they created this bar(+ a little american-french touch). A good place for a coffee in the afternoon or a drink with friends. Go to Heroes !
