Freischwimmer

Is being a waiter a horrible job in Berlin? I’m getting used to the service staff in Berlin not exactly being the sharpest tools in the shed and/​or they just really don’t like working/​thinking. I thank the dull eyed hipster staff at Freischwimmer for setting a new bar which is now exceptionally low. I can rest assured that it would be difficult to get worse service than here, and will likely enjoy future experiences in Berlin more knowing the service couldn’t be as bad as at Freischwimmer.
The actual space is amazing. Really beautiful spot to be at dusk in the summer. Just, wow, oh wow, has management checked on who is running the place in years?

Great menu, full wine list, limited beer selection, cocktails, no happy hour. Mix of local color, start-​up hipsters and tourists.
Nice view of canal, terrace full when weather’s nice, inside full when not nice. Lunch service was not great, not terribly friendly either.
Wouldn’t go out of my way to eat here again. Rather go to White Trash across the canal.

Tolles Essen und besonderes Ambiente. Man sitzt in einem gemütlichen Raum mit Kamin und guckt direkt aufs Wasser. Die Preise sind fair und die Auswahl immer gut!

We popped in here for a few drinks after eating at White Trash Fast Food across the canal and enjoyed the laid-​back vibe. Dimly lit by candles, it’s relaxed and cosy. I’m sure its setting overlooking the canal is excellent in the summer as there’s an outdoor terrace next to the water.

Freitag Mittag war es ziemlich leer, trotzdem war die Tagessuppe «aus». Der alternative Salat war sehr okay, die location den Charme des Provisorischen. Atmosphäre sehr angenehm, kann man empfehlen

Service schlecht, ewiges Warten auf das Essen. Mein Essen kam erst, als meine Begleitung bereits fertig war, d.h. noch mal 20 min später, keine Entschuldigung seitens des überforderten (Aushilfs-?)Kellners, außer «ist halt schwierig zu koordinieren mit den beiden Küchen». Das Thunfischsteak war trocken und zäh, das gesamte Essen nur noch lauwarm, selbst die Kartoffeln. Der Hauswein, war schlecht, sowohl der Rosé als auch der Riesling. Für das Gebotene deutlich zu teuer. Außer uns überwiegend Laufkundschaft (= Touristen). Fazit: Touristenabzockschuppen.
P. S.: Klopapier war auch aus.

super location… dafür den einen stern. ansonsten: essen war tiefkühlware, fad und lauwarm serviert. das ganze zu überteuerten preisen… nie wieder zum essen

First of all we didn’t get the table we ordered. Didn’t get a nice seat, only in smelly corner.
Service was ok, not too bad!
Food…mhhhh…
Steak wasn’t good at all. 1 out of 5
Grilled veggies nothing special too. 2 out of 5
Flammkuchen a bit dry. 2,5 out of 5
Flat bread with turkey was good, some oriental taste in there. 3,5 out of 5
I won’t come back again.

Sehr gemütliche Atmosphäre, allerdings dauert es bis das Barpersonal aufmerksam wird.

The location is nice and the food is ok, but the service is a complete disaster and arrogant on top of it.
One of us got her first and second courses simultaneously and the rest nothing until 30 minutes later. We obviously told the waiter we didn’t find that ok and she replied that’s the way they do it there with very bad manners. We told her that we wanted to talk to the manager, but never happened to come.
Never again.

Ich war neulich zum ersten Mal hier, aber nach der monatelangen Vorfreude und dem Gefühl, es endlich mal dorthin geschafft zu haben, wurde meine Euphorie doch stark ausgebremst.
Die Lage ist super und das Essen sehr lecker — keine Frage…
Aber der Service — gruselig! Die Bedienungen waren nicht nur sehr unaufmerksam, sondern auch unfreundlich und offensichtlich schlecht gelaunt. Kein Augenkontakt mit dem Gast, keine Wohlfühlatmosphäre…
Ich denke, man kann hier nicht mehr von der allseits bekannten Berliner Freundlichkeit sprechen… das war einfach unangemessen und die Lage ist der hauptsächliche Pluspunkt dieses Lokals. Darauf sollte man sich allerdings nicht ausruhen…

MINDESTENS so cool wie der weltbekannte club gegenüber dafür weniger tourilastig. man fühlt sich wie im wald mit fluss:)

Wir waren am 31.05.15 dort, man wollte uns irgendwie nicht bedienen. Zwar hat die Bedienung unseren Tisch gewischt und betont, daß man gleich die Bestellung aufnehmen würde, aber dieses geschah leider nicht. Wir warteten und warteten, nichts geschah. Nach 30 Minuten verließen wir das Lokal. Das Lokal ist gut gelegen (am Wasser). Die Toiletten könnten auch mal renoviert werden. Wir werden es noch einmal versuchen, dann haben wir vielleicht mehr Glück.

Auswahl an Speisen und Getränken groß wobei die Karte aus losen Blättern besteht die schnell mal durcheinander geraten können. Die Lage direkt am Wasser sehr schön und das Personal freundlich und schnell.

Lage und Ambiente sind hier top! Das wurde hier schon oft gesagt und da gibt es auch nichts zu rütteln.
ABER: was da gestern mit dem Service los was, konnte ich nicht verstehen. Wir waren eine ca. 16 köpfige Gruppe. Bis mal die Bestellungen aufgenommen wurden, dauerte es ca. 20 Minuten. Man sass also schonmal ziemlich lange wartend auf dem Trockenen, gespannt, wann denn die vorbeihuschenden Bedienungen auch mal für den eigenen Tisch Zeit haben mögen… Nach weiteren 10 Minuten kamen mal die ersten Getränke, wobei hier einiges vergessen wurde und ein zweites Mal bestellt werden musste. Während die einen also endlich was zu trinken hatten, durften die andern nochmals ca. 10 Minuten zuschauen und für baldige Erfrischungen beten.
Irgendwann kam dann auch das Essen, wobei hier Vor– und Hauptspeisen munter durcheinander gewürfelt wurden. Man musste sich damit abfinden, dass man die bestellte Suppe oder den Salat eben erst nach dem Hauptgang ass. Einige aus unserer Gruppe erhielten ihr Essen auch erst, als die anderen schon lange mit allem durch waren. Ein paar Bestellungen wurden gar ganz vergessen.
Timing wird im Freischwimmer wohl echt winzig klein geschrieben. Das Essen hat dafür sehr gut geschmeckt (ich hatte den vegetarischen Grillteller).
Dieses Lokal profitiert sehr stark von seiner tollen Lage, ansonsten könnten sie sich so einen Service wohl kaum erlauben. Schade! Denn sonst hätte es wirklich gestimmt.

Wir waren an einem Sonntag hier und kamen an, kurz bevor um 15 Uhr offiziell der Brunch (13 Euro) beendet war. Auf Nachfrage durften wir uns für je 7 Euro noch jeder einen großen Teller vom Brunch Buffet fertigmachen, was ich ziemlich cool fand. Im Gegensatz zu den anderen Bewertungen hier, fand ich die Bedienung generell deutlich oberhalb Berliner Standards und sehr aufmerksam und freundlich. Wir wurden sogar gefragt, ob wir doch nochmal schnell zum Buffet gehen wollen, als es dann gegen 16 Uhr abgebaut wurde! (Waren aber von unserem einen Teller schon pappsatt!)
Das Essen beim Brunch war lecker (vor allem der Tomatensalat und die Pfannkuchen mit Ahornsirup sind mir in Erinnerung geblieben) und mit dem Deal den wir gemacht hatten, preislich der normalen Karte weit überlegen ;) (es gibt traditionelle Deutsche/​bayrische Küche zu für diesen Stadtteil eher gehobenen Preisen.) Dazu leckere Rhabarber-​Schorle im moderat bepreisten Halbliterkrug und ein guter Latte Machiato. Ein richtig perfekter Sonntag Nachmittag!
Die Location ist spektakulär, vor allem wenn man an einem der ersten Frühlingstage herkommt und sich noch nicht sattsehen kann an den ersten Sonnenstrahlen, die vor den Fenstern aufs Wasser scheinen (der Freischwimmer ist ein Hausboot), während gleichzeitig der holzofen noch einen heimeligen Duft verbreitet. Wir kommen definitiv wieder!

I am reviewing this place based on an early spring evening indoors.
During March they are open only inside and the inside is just the most comfortable place one can imagine.
The prices are a bit higher but one can still find a good deal. I had a red wine (the cheapest on the menu), which was pretty tasty and just fit the mood. And towards the end of the night, I ordered a standard coffee serviced with a pot of milk. It was nice and creamy.
It is rustic, wooden and very intimate. The windows are large and one can look out at the water. Even on a rainy day this place becomes just so charming because of the rain hitting the water and the window and the fireplace is lit.
During the summer this area that we have been to, is closed and only the open area is open. According to the waitress, the outdoor area provides about 500 spaces to sit. This place also has brunch during the weekend and summer months.
I will be coming back in the summer to see the other side of this place.

BBQ-​Burger und Flammkuchen waren super lecker. Auch sehr gut für Gruppen geeignet und trotz den winterlichen Temperaturen sehr warme und angenehme Location.

Super Location (hausboot mit Blick aufs Wasser), schön gemütlich eingerichtet (frische Blumen auf dem Tisch, Kerzen und ein befeuerter Ofen (!!) der es schön warm macht in der kalten Jahreszeit). Kaffee schmeckt auch super, ist allerdings etwas teuer (bin mir nicht mehr ganz sicher, aber ich glaub der lag so bei was um 2,80 rum). Gegessen habe ich leider nichts, aber was den anderen Gästen aufgetischt wurde sah schon ziemlich appetitlich aus (gut bürgerliche kost, schön angerichtet, allerdings auch etwas teuer)

Winterbewertung eines Ladens, der im Sommer sicherlich durch seine Lage punkten kann.
Bedienung
Pikiertes Personal. Unfreundlich. Keine Umgangsformen. Genervt vom Gast. Falschen Beruf ausgesucht.
Das Essen
Banal. Bescheiden bis maximal Durschschnitt. Und so lieblos dabei. Kantine kann besser sein.
Das Ambiente
Rotzig. Belanglosigkeit schwingt sich auf und inszeniert sich als großer Wurf.
Sauberkeit
Mistig. WC einfach unglaublich. Gastraum mit Holzverbrennungsgasen gesättigt. Verbrannnt wurden gestern u.a. geteerte Holzlatten. Hallo Umwelt! Dennoch zugig, kalt und feucht.

Wir waren hier auf einer privaten Geburtstagsfeier. Daher kann ich nicht die übliche Musik und auch nicht das Essen bewerten. Die Getränke waren gut, wenn auch etwas teurer, dafür hat man einen schönen Blick aufs Wasser. Es ist sehr gemütlich, ein lang gezogenes Lokal mit mehreren Ecken zum Sitzen auch Sofas gibt eshier von drinnen bis nach draußen auf einer Terasse kann man sich bewegen und ein Platz zum Sitzen aussuchen. Im Sommer wird wohl auch gegrillt, da würde mich interessieren um noch mal hier her zu kommen, wenn ich wieder mal in Berlin bin.
Handtrockner auf dem WC war defekt, Papier gab es nicht… schade, daher nur 4 Sterne.

Lage: Hervorragend
Ambiente: Faszinierend würde Mr. Spock sagen
Service: Mittelprächtig! Die bestellte Flasche Wein mussten wir selber einschenken!
Essen: Eigentlich sehr gut, aber…
Portionen: Die sind gelinde gesagt eine Frechheit! Mein bestelltes Schnitzel war minimum 70 Gramm leicht. Sowas darf man nicht akzeptieren!
Weiß nicht ob ich da wieder hingehen würde.

Great area! Beautiful view and spot! We had dinner. The food was pretty decent and fast. There was a lineup (6 parties ahead) when we got here at 8:30pm on a Friday night but it moved fast (20 minutes). Staff were friendly!

Wunderschöné Location auf dem Wasser, tolle, etwas teurere Speisen. Wir hatten Flammkuchen mit Spinat, Buttersoße und Kirschtomaten und den vegetarischen Grillteller für 7 bzw. 9 Euro. Teuerstes Gericht: Entrecôte für 20. Service war super schnell und freundlich, trotz großen Andrangs. Nicht nur was für Hipster (sehr gemischtes Publikum, auch mit Mutti kann man hier hingehen) trotz bester Lage im Party-​Kiez. Wer elektronische Musik mag: Man wird am Wochenende vom gegenüberliegenden Club der Visionäre beschallt. Einziger Wermutstropfen: die vorbeifließende Spree scheint nicht die beste Wasserqualität zu haben :) Trotzdem war ich dort nicht das letzte Mal!

Ich liebe diese Location. Gerade an einem warmen Sommerabend sehr zum
Empfehlen. Bis jetzt war ich zweimal da und beide Male konnte ich keine schlechten Erfahrungen machen. Die Kellner passen in die Szene und waren mir gegenüber sehr freundlich. Auch wenn es um Beratung ging waren sie in der Lage ein paar Sachen zu. Empfehlen. Das Essen sieht lecker aus und schmeckt auch ganz gut. Preislich sicher nicht der günstigste Laden, aber wie jeder Weiß zahlt man auch für eine gute Location. Cocktails hab ich allerdings nicht probiert und mag mir aus diesem Grund auch kein Urteil erlauben.

Der Freischwimmer hat eine super-​Lage; wenn die Bedienung nicht so gehetzt und an der Grenze der Unfreundlichkeit wäre, würde ich bestimmt öfter hier einen
netten Abend mit Freunden verbringen. Aber ich gebe Geld ungern da aus, wo
ich mich absolut unwillkommen fühle.

The setting and location along the canal is of course excellent, but otherwise this is a pretty average place. Service is scarce and not very friendlywe waited at least 15 minutes before we even got a menu, and getting the waitstaff’s attention was pretty difficult for the rest of our time there. We weren’t the only ones, pretty much every table could be seen unsuccessfully trying to get their attention and being rushed by without so much as a glance of acknowledgement. Drinks are reasonable enough, food is alright if a little overpriced. We had some of the teriyaki chicken skewers (and by teriyaki chicken they apparently mean chicken that had a quick run through some plain Chinese soy sauce before being grilledI wouldn’t call it teriyaki at all, either the name or the recipe needs a revision). The 2 skewers were medium sized and along with the small handful of rucola leaves (the menu said romaine salad) was not the greatest deal at 8.90. I’d probably go here again just because I like the location, but would probably prefer to stick to just drinks, and definitely wouldn’t go if I had any sort of time constraints.

My friend who lives in berlin showed me around to a few awesome spots and Freischwimmer WAS BY FAR my favorite restaurant in Berlin. It stood right up there with White Trash Fast Food Restaurant. The vibe here is much more relaxed and one that I never wanted to leave. If it was not for the rain we would have still been munching on olives and bread and feeding the ducks that swim in the canal. Freischwimmer is an old house boat and there are many along this canal that are converted into restaurants, lounges and clubs. It is situated outside with a portion that you can sit under the roof but still outside so if you get chilly BRING a sweater. The food is outstanding. I would say that the menu is a little bit of European and Asian dishes. Now, the full bar here is awesome and though they Whisky selection is sadly limited they can still make a good Whisky Sour. Priced very reasonably so perfect for those traveling on a budget.
The view is great and it is a short walk to the River Spree and on those warm days it is also close to Badeschiff (outdoor public pool on the River Spree)…

During a sunny day it’s the perfect place to come and enjoy a nice drink with a view on the Spree!
At night you can hear the music of Club der Visionaire… then starts the excitement… do i stay here… quiet… or do i cross the river and join the others beats addict of the Club!
As you see… I like this place because it’s like tossing a coin: Heads you stay quiet… Tails you go crazy!

A friend took me here and we were able to find a spot in the lounge chairs on the dock area… but this is a super fashionable scene. I watched the swans building their nest and incubating an egg for hours whilst drinking a nice fresh peppermint tea.
I need to go back again… This review was written in 2009.

It would be a great plan, to come here to chill out with some friends, then hit «Club der Visionäre» across the corner, for some dancing and fun.
I have not tried the food yet, but i doubt i am going to. The plates on our neighboring tables did not look like cooking pieces of art.
For a couple of beers and an amazingly nice carribean view, it is the perfect place.

I always come here in summer for Sunday brunch, whitch is tasty and big. Be sure to come on a sunny sunny day so you can enjoy your breakfast on the riverside. Ah, unfortunately there is no jogurth… that should be improved.

I love the atmosphere there. It’s different from any other restaurant. The service is slow but the food is amazing. If you have time and just want to relax, this is the best place.

Sounds like a good place for lunch, but the place is worn down and rickety and does not have much personality and charm. Brunch was so so, the food was okay, staff a bit unfriendly. Maybe it was just a bad day. It’s a ways from the center of the city. For the price one can find a better brunch location. Not as trendy and hip as advertised.

Cet endroit est pour moi typiquement berlinois: imaginez un bateau sur un canal dans un quartier en train de monter (Schlesisches Tor), un brunch énoooorme tous les dimanches (une tradition berlinoise!), où vous trouverez aussi bien des jeunes familles branchées que des clubbers mal réveillés Entre la quiétude du restaurant, le chant des oiseaux, les canards et les basses du club after juste à côté, on né sait pas trop où on a atterri, mais on est content d’être là! En plus le quartier est idéal pour aller se promener après le brunch les dimanches ensoleillés.
Le Freischwimmer propose aussi des projections ciné et une ambiance cosy avec un poêle en hiver, mais je n’ai pas encore testé

Un lieu extraordinaire magique drôle, komisch, tout ce que vous voulez. Incontournable.
Mais un personnel très antipathique, de la cuisine on né peut plus inintéressante et assez chère, sauf le brunch du dimanche qui est correct. A fréquenter les matins d’été, quand on peut regarder de l’autre côté du canal les champions qui finissent leur nuit au club der Visionäre. On est au spectacle, voire au zoo, et c’est savoureux. Avec le poum poum un peu agaçant (voir commentaire sur ce club d’after).

I am a great fan of brunch as it’s a good excuse to pig out on the theory that one is actually eating two meals at once.
Freischwimmer is a cool rickety and haphazard sort of place, and rather long as it stretches some 70 – 80 metres along the side of a canal. I finally got a table next to the canal and settled down for some serious chatting and eating.
Regarding the food, well, let’s just say that Michelin stars are never going to get awarded here. But there is plenty of food on the buffet though replenishments are somewhat on the slow side.
The best part is watching the world mosey by at the edge of the canal and it’s a great relaxing place on a spring or summer Sunday. It is also ridiculously cheap and eventually we moved on to beers after the coffee and I still could not spend more than 25 Euro for a nice Sunday outing.
