Dicke Wirtin

Ausschlaggebend für eine Reservierung für 15 Personen in diesem Lokal war die große Auswahl an Bieren sowie die gute Bewertung der Speisen auf dieser Seite.
In der dicken Wirtin erwartet einen richtig gute Hausmannskost. Die Portionen sind sehr groß und wirklich nichts für den kleinen Hunger zwischendurch. :-)
Das Ambiente ist sehr urig und das Personal ist sehr aufmerksam und schnell.
Preis-​Leistung sind absolut top. Wer einen gemütlichen Bierabend mit deftigem Essen erleben möchte ist hier genau richtig!

Heute nach der Grünen Woche sind wir hier mit 5 Leutchen zum Speisen eingekehrt. Ein super gemütliches alteingesessenes Restaurant mit netten und kompetenten Bedienungen haben wir vorgefunden. Hier wird gutschmeckende Hausmannskost serviert. Unser Eisbein hätte locker für zwei gereicht. Rinderroulade, Gulasch und Königsberger Klopse hätte Oma nicht besser hin bekommen!
Gerne empfehlen wir dieses Restaurant weiter — aber ohne Reservierung geht hier nichts!

Ich war Ende September an zwei Abenden mit Kollegen in der «Dicken Wirtin». Zum Glück hatten wir reserviert. Der Laden ist immer voll, ob mit Berlinern oder Touris, ist egal. Die Dicke Wirtin ist für alle da. Am ersten Abend haben wir gegessen (u.a. Roulade) Absolut lecker und sehr reichlich. Danach hatten wir Lust auf einen «Klaren». Glücklicherweise hat uns der sehr nette Kellner auf die Hausbrände hingewiesen. Da haben wir glatt einige probiert. Am nächsten Abend haben wir DUMMERWEISE im ZILLE MARKT gegessen (siehe auch dort meine Bewertung). Danach brauchten wir die Hausbrände der «Dicken Wirtin». Obwohl wir nicht reserviert hatten, bekamen wir einen sehr schönen Tisch draußen. Auch hier eine sehr nette Bedienung. Nachdem wir einige Stündchen dort verbracht und auch einiges konsumiert hatten, ging die letzte komplette Runde auf‘s Haus. Die hätte uns zwar auch nicht ärmer gemacht, ist aber eine nette Geste. Insgesamt eine sehr gemütliche Berliner Kneipe, freundliches und aufmerksames Personal. Ich/​Wir gehen wieder hin. Ihr müsst es aber nicht, da ist es beim nächsten Mal vielleicht nicht so voll. :-)

Eine Mega Eisbein. Preis Leistung ist nicht zu toppen. 3 Eisbein für 6 Leute und alle pappsatt. Wir kommen bald wieder. Vielleicht gibt’s dann das «kleine» Schnitzel.

Conveniently located just a block from our fantastic hotel the Steinplatz. We were looking for authentic German cuisine and we got exactly what we were looking for. Excellent excellent excellent in all aspects. Thursday night the place was lively with live German music and they were packed. However, we were greeted at the door with a big welcome and offered drinks at the bar while we waited and had a table before we got our drinks. Beer selection was good — classic German — and everyone was so friendly.
We got a table in the back room — cozy and warm and the air filled with music and laughs from other diners. The waiter took our order and a second waitress assisted. Food was delivered hot and it was awesome.

Wir hatten Glück und haben an einem Mittwoch Abend 18:30 einen letzten Tisch bekommen (der ab 20:30 reserviert war — das hat uns zeitlich dicke gereicht)
Sehr schönes, gemütliches Ambiente, sehr freundlicher Service und ganz leckeres Essen.
Es gibt ‘Hausmannskost’ auf hohem Niveau — und das ist hier ein großes Kompliment!
So leckere Rouladen mit Knödel und Rotkraut habe ich selten gegessen

Excellent German pub grub and beer. Well priced and authentic.

Excellent German food in a cozy Charlottenburg reataurant. I had the Rouladen with cabbage and potato dumplings. Good stuff. I highly recommend it. Small place but room outside to eat on this quiet street.

We went here based on the Unilocal reviews looking for German cuisine. My wife had the Königsberger Klopse mit Rote Bete und Salzkartoffeln (Meatballs with boiled potatoes) and I took the Bratheringe mit Zwiebeln & Bratkartoffeln (Two pickled fried herrings with onions & fried potatoes). We both enjoyed our meal — the food was well prepared and as expected. Unfortunately, we had to sit outside and it was a bit on the cold side. Our beer was the usual German offering which to us is not very impressive if you are used to the Californian specialty beers. Overall, a pleasant and inexpensive experience and the service was friendly.

Lovely traditional German food. Tasty and fresh. Really good value and a friendly welcome. We have visited here each time we come to Berlin.

Very nice vibe. Great food. The waitress couldn’t have been any kinder. Warning though, the schnitzel could easily feed two people. It’s huge!

Great low key restaurant! We stopped in on our first night in Berlin based on reviews we found online (and it was walking distance from our hotel). We didn’t have reservations and ended up having to sit at the bar since there was nothing available. If you have a larger group or absolutely have to have a table I would highly recommend making a reservation even for a week-​night.
The place reminded me of a great local bar, a little dark inside, a energetic atmosphere, lots of conversation and laughter — just a nice chill place. The food however, was really good! We started with the asparagus soup (it was a special while we were there) and it was SO good. My hubby ordered the schnitzel and it was huge! Definitely bring your appetite for that one. It was nice and crispy, super thin, and everything a schnitzel should be. I ordered a chicken entrée (I don’t remember exactly what it was called) which was very well done and perfect for someone looking for something a little lighter.
Service was very polite and we really enjoyed our experience. I would highly recommend stopping in if you’re looking for a laid back place to grab a drink or a bite to eat!

Wir haben uns da sehr wohl gefüllt, der Mittagstisch war sehr lecker ich finde wer noch nie in Berlin war sollte da auf jeden Fall mal rein schauen

Great restaurant for genuine German food. I had the the Geschnetzeltes «Grunewald» (steak strips with a mushroom cream sauce and spaetzle), for dinner the other night and Currywurst for lunch today and both were excellent. However, it still does not beat the best currywurst, only found at a Schnell Imbiss, (sidewalk stand). Die Dicke Wirtin translate to «The Fat Landlady.» They do not have pommes frites (french fries) with their huge currywurst (which I believe is a must for a «Berlin Currywurst») however you can ask for bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes) which are outstanding…

Sehr uriges Ambiente und das Essen schmeckt wie bei Mutter.
Einzig die Anzahl der vegetarischen Gerichte ist leider viel zu gering und vegan gibt es gar nicht.

Eine alte Kneipe/​Restaurant mit gutbürgerlicher Küche. Leckeres Essen mit ordentlichen Portionen zu günstigen Preisen. Das Lokal ist immer voll, also Tisch reservieren. Besonders das Schnitzel ist für den großen Hunger eine Empfehlung. Wir waren zur Spargelzeit dort und die Spargelgerichte der Saisonkarte waren sehr sehr lecker!
Dazu gibt es 8 Biere vom Fass, z.B. auch Duckstein, Guinnes, Andecks Helles, Köpi, Köstrizer. Dazu eine sehr große Auswahl an Bränden und Likören für «danach». echt Klasse und die Preise sind durchweg okay.
Wir kommen beim nächsten Berlinbesuch auf alle Fälle wieder. Die Lage an der S-​Bahn-​Station Savinyplatz ist sehr gut erreichbar.
Bürgerlich Essen kann man in Berlin in vielen Lokalen, aber nur hier in Kombination mit dem alten Ambiente und der Bierauswahl. Ein Tipp!

Ate with the family at this place as we had heard it had great German food. We’re vacationing here and stayed nearby so thought we really lucked out. Well sadly it was not to be. The currywurst was alright and their signature dish of fried pork cutlet while was great value for the portion size was nothing the write home about. The spetzle was alright, but the apple strudel was really doughy.
The beer on tap was good but it’s hard to find bad German beer honestly.
Now we get to the worst part… service was atrocious. We placed our order and waited 30 – 40 minutes just for our dishes to come out. At the end our bill came and they had two items from another table that they incorrectly charged us for and instead of making it right by removing the items, they decided to just give us the drinks the other table had and left the bill the same. I mean seriously who does that?! Sadly will not be recommending this place for good German food.

Diese Gaststätte ist gut besucht, man muss also rechtzeitig reservieren um einen Platz zu bekommen. Insgesamt bekommt man dort sehr leckere Speisen von sehr freundlichen Bedienungen. Es gibt auch eine große Auswahl an diversen Bieren und sonstigen Getränken. TOP!

Dit is Berlin… Eine Berliner Institution mit Tradition über viele Jahrzehnte– eine in Charlottenburg zentral gelegene Kneipe in der Nähe vom Savignyplatz… Herzlich Willkommen im bunt gemischten Trubel und komplett voll besetzten Tischen. Mit kurzer Wartezeit werden wir «zwischengeparkt» bevor unser Essen auf den (etwas größeren) runden Tisch kommt. Berliner Bier, originelle Schnäpse und selbst gebrannte Liköre gehen hier am Wochenende zu Hauf über die Theke. Die Speisekarte geht von Bratkartoffeln zu Nudelgerichten über Suppen und Eintöpfen zu deftigen Fleischgerichten. Die Teller sind sehr gut gefüllt, sind alle schön angerichtet. Der dazu aufgerufene Preis stimmt. Die Stimmung auch bei dem Dicke Wirtin Team ist super gut, freundlich und die Ansprache erfolgt frei nach Berliner Schnauze. Hier sind viele Stammgäste anzutreffen… Passend zum Gesamtbild in dieser Kneipe. Wir fühlen uns rundum wohl und sagen das gerne weiter.

A loose translation of the name to English would be «The Fat Landlady», which is congruent with the signage for the establishment.
This is a good value source of German comfort food in a quiet, leafy part of West Berlin (far enough away from the Ku’damm to not attract too many tourists), and, as is often, but counter-​intuitively the case in the Captial of Europe’s biggest economy, good value too.
Service is good, and — again as is now an expectation in Berlin — no need to worry about the language barrier.

Am Savignyplatz gelegen gibt es «die dicke Wirtin».
Ganz wichtig vorweg: am besten RESERVIEREN! Spontan Abends dort essen gehen ist meistens schwer. Es sei denn man sitzt am Tresen oder an den erhöhten Tischen.
Ich bin heute Mittag dort aufgeschlagen weil ich Hunger auf Schnitzel hatte. Deshalb habe ich mir auch das Schnitzel «dicke Wirtin» mit wrmen Kartoffelsalat und Gurkensalat bestellt. Die Portion ist wirklich gut groß (siehe Foto). Wenn man aber Hunger hat bekommt man es aber aufgegessen.
Die Bedienung, sowohl die weibliche als auch die männliche war sehr nett und locker. Nicht unfreundlich oder gar pampig. Hier und da mal ein lockerer Spruch auf den Lippen. Perfekt!
Das Essen war durchweg sehr gut. Schnitzel knusprig, Salate lecker.
Der Preis mit 12 Euro ist da angemessen. Da braucht man bei der Lage des Lokals nicht meckern!
Gigantisch ist übrigens auch die Auswahl an Obstbränden die über dem Tresen zum zapfen hängen.
Ich bin normalerweise kein Liebhaber von Bränden, aber es gab auch milde Sorten. Unbedingt probieren! Ingwer sehr lecker, Haselnuss auch gut un irgendwas mit Honig auch lecker. Nach den drei Gläsern war mir dann auch warm ;-)
Ich komme auf jeden Fall wieder!
Ach ja, zum Dessert habe ich mir dann noch einen «kalten Hund» gegönnt.

Ich hatte zur Dezemberzeit Rehbraten. Rehbraten der Extraklasse muss ich wohl sagen. Die Beilagen top, das Fleisch sehr gut gegart.
Das Restaurant gibt es schon ein paar Jahre und es ist stets gut besucht, was immer ein Zeichen für Qualität ist.
Der Service war schnell und sehr am Wohl der Gäste interessiert. Individuelle Änderungswünsche wurden angenommen und verwirklicht.
Den Rest der Karte muss man sich als gute deutsche Küche vorstellen. Meine drei Begleiter hatten jeweils etwas anderes und alle waren begeistert.
Dafür zahlt man dann auch gerne 9 – 15 Euro pro Gericht.
Sehr empfehlenswert. Gerne wieder.

Eng, charmant und mit Berliner Schnauze. Das ist kurz und knapp die «Dicke Wirtin» in Charlottenburg. Wir saßen gegenüber vom Tresen und konnten zu dritt das Ambiente genießen.
Die Königsberger Klopse Klasse, hier gibt’s auch Leber und Schnitzel vom Feinsten.

Urige Berliner Gastlichkeit. Über das Essen zu reden würde zu lange dauern, da das so gut ist, dass man sich stundenlang darüber freuen könnte. Man sieht und schmeckt die Liebe zum Job. Besonders die Qualität und Auswahl der Obstbrände ist einzigartig. Ein Knaller ist auch der Kaffee. Service und Ambiente sind genauso einzigartig und authentisch. Ein Muss für Berlinbesucher.

Great spot for a low key meal in Berlin! We arrived in Berlin late on Friday night and wanted to grab a quick meal near our hotel. We arrived to a completely packed pub/​restaurant — but luckily there was a couple occupying the end of a large table and they were kind enough to share.
Upon reviewing the menu we decided on the currywurst and potato salad to start, along with a few Helles beers. Berlin loves their currywurst but this one was really nice and the potato salad was so tasty.
For mains we got the beef roulade with cabbage and dumplings, the pork with cabbage and dumplings, the smoked pork chops and the potato crusted white fish. All of the dishes were so nice. My beef roulade was well seasoned and paired perfectly with the slightly sweet red cabbage.
The place had great food and a nice atmosphere for those just wanting a beer. Would return!

Our hotel suggested this restaurant as an authentic German restaurant. We came for lunch. We really enjoyed this place. The menu was in English and German. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. Decently priced. Overall we enjoyed it our server was very nice! We would definitely this place! I had the Berlin platter which was pretty large and assorted. Enjoy!!!

Samstagabend in Charlottenburg am Savignyplatz, hier stehen Restaurants eng an eng. Uns war nach guter deutscher Küche und so endeten wir bei der dicken Wirtin, wo wir gerade noch einen Platz bekommen haben.
2 Bier und 2 Schnitzel «dicke Wirtin», das Leben kann manchmal so einfach sein.
Doch zunächst habe ich kurz geschluckt bei dem Preis von 12,90 € für ein Schweineschnitzel mit Kartoffel– und Gurkensalat. Doch beim Anblick des Tellers verflog meine Skepsis. Ein Schnitzel von der gefühlten Größe eine Babydecke thronte auf dem nicht kleinen Teller. Damit es sich nicht zu alleine fühlte, gab es noch eine kleines Schnitzel dazu. Der Kartoffelsalat übernahm die Rolle des Babys und hatte es sich unter dem warmen Schnitzel gemütlich gemacht, während der Gurkensalat im Glas untergebracht war und neben einer kleinen Salatdekoration den letzten Platz auf dem Teller einnahm.
Das Schnitzel war sehr gut, die Panade schön knusprig, das Fleisch zart und nicht trocken. Als Schweineschnitzel weder zu dick noch zu dünn. Der Kartoffelsalat war gut, auch wenn ich schon besseren hatte.
Wir haben aufgegessen, aber es war knapp. Leider war man so voll, dass es (vorerst) nur bei einem Bier blieb.
Ich komme gerne wieder und versuche mich mal an den anderen Gerichten, das Schnitzel hat schon mal Lust auf mehr gemacht!

Waiter here was very patient with us as we tried to figure out what to order. I was starving when we arrived and looking for a good meal. We loved that this place had locals as well as tourists. We sat outside and watched the street traffic while we ate.
For dinner, we had beer (of course). My boyfriend had beef and cabbage that was tender and oh so good! Mushrooms were in season so I had pork schnitzel topped with a creamy mushroom sauce and potatoes. It was lovely and flavorful.
If you are in Berlin and looking for an authentic German meal this place is worth checking out.

Kartoffel here, kartoffel there. Enough with the spuds, already! This quaint restaurant is a happy blend of locals and tourists, jammed when we were there, and is worth a visit even if you’re not a big schweinfleishschnitzel fan. We had asked our hotel (Intercontinental — up the street from the zoo) concierege to make a reservation at the last minute, after some friends had mentioned that they were going to be dining there. We arrived, but our friends had already left so we were left to our own devices. The hostess seated us in the back room on the little platform on the left, so we had a good view of all the happenings.
First, bring on the beer. I had a Berliner Kindl, which was quite nice, not as hoppy as American lagers. I ordered a .4 liter glass. I could have ordered a .3 liter glass, but what the hell — why not splurge for that extra tenth? Now, if you’ve never been to the EU countries, you should understand going in that there are STANDARDS — which are scrupulously observed. You can’t just order a glass of beer, or a pint of beer which may end up with slightly more or less, depending on the mood of the bartender. No, friends — you order .3 and you get .3 — ’cause there’s an engraved line on the glass, so NO CHEATIN! I found this punctiliousness to be frankly depressing. Such good little rule-​followers, those Germans. Achtung! Jawohl (click heels here.)
I ordered something that was potato-​heavy. There was salad on the side. Their lettuce compares favorably with our lettuce, so I felt right at home.
The schnitzel seems to be the big attraction here, and it was delivered in steady streams all evening. Don’t be fooled. This is NOT Weiner Schnitzel, which is made from veal. This is pork schnitzel, which our waiter in Austria, a week later, told us was a German insult to Austrian cooking.
This is a fun place and you will have a good time. Two notes: our waitresses all spoke enough English to be helpful in finding the toiletten, and the service can be slow.
Finally, as we were leaving, we met some other friends seated at an outside table. So, it wasn’t a total loss.

we arrived in berlin extremely hungry. by now, we’d been on a 7 – 8 hour flight from delhi, followed by a 2 – 3 hour wait until we boarded multiple trains that took hours to get us from frankfurt to berlin.
the place with the best reviews was dicke wirtin — right around the corner from our hotel, and later we discovered was also suggested by our hotel.
the sign was very misleading being placed where it was. there was a door right next to it and we walked in only to find an empty abandoned building within. we were very confused, then peeped around the corner and found the patio and restaurant we were looking for.

we each ordered a beer — i had the schnedier weisse hef and my s.o. had a pilsner. we ordered a riesen-​bockwurst (large frankfurter) and the charlottenburger: zwiebelrostbraten vom rumpsteak mit bratkartoffeln & salat or, onion beef roast with fried potatoes and salad (top left). between this «burger» as they called it (really it was just a steak/​burger patty with an au jus type dressing, topped with grilled onions) and our beers, we were pretty full — but then we saw the warmer apfelstrudel (warm apple strudel with custard and cream). a lot of people raved about this dessert, and i’m a sucker for a warm apple dish, so we got it, and we’re so glad we did.
we wanted to come back to dicke wirtin for at least a beer and another apple strudel, but unfortunately, our stay in berlin was very brief… and it was on to the next!

Meine Erwartungen waren groß als ich den Beitrag im TV über diese Lokalität sah. Als ich jedoch dann vergangenen Sonntag beim Abendessen war und den ersten Happen meiner Rinderroulade im Mund hatte wusste ich, hier komm ich bestimmt wieder hin.
Das Fleisch so zart und saftig, die Gewürze präsent aber nicht aufdringlich! Rotkohl und Knödel waren perfekt.
Das Lokal super Uhrig eingereichtet. Ein typisches Lokal wie man es früher kannte. Kein neumodisches Zeug sondern authentisch eingerichtet, mit Flair und Liebe ins Detail.

Food: I had two beers, Schneider Weisse and Schwarzbier. Both were good. For food, I got a plate of sausages, potatoes, and sauerkraut. They were all excellent. I would definitely come back for their food.
Service: English is almost useless here, so bring a German speaking friend if you can. Otherwise, service is pretty decent. It was super busy when we got there and you could tell that the wait staff was running around trying to get to everybody.
Location: Since the place was packed, my friends and I had to sit outside. If you’re intolerant of smoking, make sure you try and pick a table that’s not downwind or you’ll be breathing in second hand smoke the entire time.

Uriges Ambiente, flinker und sympathisch rüberkommender Service, typische Berliner Küche, alles zu zivilen Preisen und bei gutem Geschmack.

Da waren wir jetzt zweimal hintereinander in der Wirtin. Gestern nur zum trinken, heute mit essen. Ja es sind Touristen da (liebe Berliner da lebt ihr von) und auch richtige Berliner aller Altersgruppen. Fazit: Kellner witzig, flott und nicht immer perfekt. Preis/​Leistung klasse! Wichtig: Essen richtig gut! Frau hatte Havelzander, ich die Leber beides auf den Punkt und lecker! Liebe Nörgler im Borchardt’s ist noch platz. Liebe Berliner entspannt euch, ihr müsst mit uns leben.

The restaurant was very busy when we arrived, but they were able to arrange a table for our family of 4 within minutes. While the restaurant allows smoking, the smoking section is separated from the rest of the restaurant by a closed door so we were not bothered.
The waiter was very friendly and had no trouble with English, but made our kids practice their German :)
They have a decent beer selection including Andechs. Portions were generous and really tasty. I had the Schöneberger Rinderroulade mit Rotkohl & Klößen which was EXCELLENT. The meat was tender and flavorful and the red cabbage may have been the best I’ve ever had. The entire family enjoyed the food and the experience.
I finished my meal with their house-​made Sauerkirsche brandy.
I can’t wait for my next trip to Berlin so I can go again!

Nice traditional «no-​nonsense» place serving very reasonable food with very reasonable prices. I had a Wienerschnitzel which was bigger than my plate, not quite the best schnitzel I’ve had but certainly worth Four Stars in my book. And size meant there was no need for starter OR dessert… Price was around 12 € so not too bad at all in this popular Savigny Platz area.
Service was quick & friendly, waiter even gave a quick lesson on German language :-) Oh and they have quite reasonable beers too, such as stuff from Kloster Andechs.

Our waiter was extremely friendly, and even advised us not to get soup if ordering schnitzel (thanks for that tip).
We shared schnitzel and beef roulade. Beef was juicy, though the size paled in comparison to the schnitzel (pork) we were served. The thing is a good food long, full of salty porky goodness! I wanted more! Not that I NEEDED any more.
Apple strudel for dessert was fresh and comforting.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Should have listened to my Dad’s Golden Rule on this one:
«Never eat anything bigger than your head.»
Dad’s Golden Rule really would have come in handy at Dicke Wirtin’s, where I managed to devour THE biggest plate of German food I’ve ever encountered. Oh man. I’m still feeling slightly queasy thinking about it. But I reeeeaaallllllyyyy should have at least been warned by the name of the place – Dicke Wirtin literally means «fat landlady.» Come ON. What more could I have needed to clue me in?!?
Well, regardless of my stomach exploding in protest (I’ll spare you the gory details), Dicke Wirtin is a pretty chill neighborhood place near Savignyplatz, and it’s one of those places that feels like it’s been around forever. Dark wood, mirrored walls, tons of German beer memorabilia, a mannequin dressed in a vintage soldier dress… it really doesn’t get more German than this. The Chicago Brauhaus can’t TOUCH this.
The menu has all your German standards: schnitzel, spätzle, cucumber salad, potato-​crusted whitefish in horseradish sauce, spargel anything (it is the time of year for asparagus, afterall!), leberkäse, you name it. And when we all received our plates, I immediately realized what a steal this place is for the amount of food you receive. I ordered the schnitzel (with pork, not veal – pork is far more common here) and it basically took up the ENTIRE plate! I ordered spätzle as a side, and the schnitzel was so huge, they put the spätzle UNDERNEATH the schnitzel… omg. Totally bigger than my head, but at this point, I think the plate of crispy, creamy deliciousness put me into a trance. There was no turning back.
The results: pretty darn good. Not the best I’ve had (I’m becoming quite the schnitzel connoisseur) but had a good crispness to it, the spätzle was creamy and had onions in it (points!), and the cucumber salad had a great vinegary flavor.
So why 3 stars? You might ask, why does Dicke Wirtin have to suffer in rating, when my eyes are too big for my stomach? Sometimes these things cannot be explained.
BUT – I’ll try this place again. It was one of the better German restaurants I’ve tried (in quality and atmosphere) so at least now I’m prepared: whatever you do, however tempted you may be, DON’T EAT IT ALL! Thanks Dad.
