After months of wanting to visit Aldi while in Germany, I finally did. It was fantastic walking into a place that I once thought was«Made in the USA» and knowing that this is where one of my fav stores comes from, Germany. It was sureal. There are coin operated grocery carts in a carosel outside just like here. Funny, didn’t see coin carts at any other stores while shopping in any of the majory cities or small towns. I wonder if this is truely an Aldi concept. The inside looks like the the inside of any Aldi in Chicago. Boxes of groceries are stacked no different than they are here. There is a «special of the week» section and tons of alcohol! Fresh fruits and veggies, frozen and dry goods, everything seems the same as your typical Aldi. One major difference, and it’s the reason for the lower rating… You can buy fresh bread from this huge bread box that has buttons for you to select your bread. That was cool but I noticed some breads that were sitting on one of the crates looked moldy. That freaked me out. Germany, like most European countries, have fresh baked bread bakeries EVERYWHERE! Hence, no need to sell«fresh bread» other than sliced for toast of buns in an Aldi. Oh well, it’s a model that works for this mega-chain. They must be doing something right, I mean it was weekday morning and the place was jam packed. Oh, and if you need a pack of smokes, they have a dispenser for that too.
